Sick of docos yet? Hopefully no!
If Cyrus Sutton’s GMO-illucidating piece piled-on the melancholy, allow this film by Keith Malloy to perk you right back up! It’s called Fishpeople and seeks to demonstrate how people use the sea to survive and thrive on this pale blue dot.
There are six main characters in this film: a free-diver/spear-fisher lass (not Rory Parker), an endurance swimmer, a water photog, a surf philanthropist, and two surfers (Rasta and Matahi Drollet).
Some of the stories are more interesting, more touching, than others. I particularly liked Rasta’s tale, both for his seamless surfing (Parko claims best in the world!) and universal understanding. Maybe Dave’s a little hippy-dippy, but the man is dripping with enlightenment.
Watching this brought me back to my most recent post on surfing and kids. If the ocean does that much to help people cope with the trials and tragedies of their everyday life, then shouldn’t parents be the ones surfing the most? I can’t imagine how liberating it’d feel to jump in the water after spending all night consoling a three-year-old with a tummy ache.
Maybe you could use Fishpeople to explain to your partner and child that you don’t want to surf, you need to surf. For like, scientific/humanitarian/sanity purposes. I don’t know, maybe worth a try?

Kimi swimmi is one bad chick. She had that spearfishing show on outdoor channel sometime back. I guarantee she would drown some of you “watermen”, I include myself in that. I liked the shooting huge tuna episode the mostest.
As much as I hate hippies in general it’s impossible for me to hate on Dave Rasta. Until he grows dreads, at least.

Rasta seems a great fit with Patagonia but I was disappointed to hear he had joined! Surfers who join Patagonia just seem to vanish, when was the last time you saw Dan Malloy in an edit? Rasta is always worth a watch!

I like all the Malloy brothers, but my favorite has always been Keith. Isn’t he doing some serious body surfing quest now?
A while back, Billabong took a crew to Bali for a photo/video soirée. I was surfing Keramas quite a bit, Komune was just a thought bubble and it was relatively uncrowded. One day the boys turned up. Andy, Dave and a ragtag of junior members. Andy forgot his boardies, so was surfing in lycra bike shorts, so no photos were allowed until someone had gone back to the hotel to get the approved style.
In my opinion, Rasta out surfed him. Taking off further inside, making insane tubes, grab rail cutbacks followed by a few lip whacks on the way through to the channel. Andy struggled to get a handle on the wave to start, blowing the first two waves on takeoff, but then figured it out and surfed impressively without being mind blowing. Except for one turn just under the lip of a left coming towards him in the channel, (giving an idea of the size that there was even a left coming at him).
I’d give Andy manoeuvre of the day, but overall Rasta took the honours.

andy was hungover. no boardshorts and flailing? sounds like a drunk andy. in “blue horizon” dave and rasta paddle out at chopes. rasta is first to swing on big one and makes it. andy gets pumped, then shows rasta truly how to surf the place.
