The level of shark activity in Australia is, how do you say, off the hook, off the charts?
How would you describe it?
Last month a swimmer was bitten in half by a fifteen-foot Great White at Little Bay, a few clicks north of Maroubra Beach; today a surfer had to fight off a shark at Maroubra.
Yesterday a swimmer was rammed by a Great White at a popular surf beach in Western Australia; a few weeks ago a girl on an inflatable toy was bitten in the guts by a Great White, in September last year, a surfer was killed near Coffs Harbour; a few months before that another surfer was killed in a shallow-water attack by a Great White at Tuncurry a few hours south; before that, fifteen-year-old Mani Hart-Deville at Wooli, dead, Rob Pedretti, Kingscliff, dead, Laeticia, dead, Gary, dead, Sharpy, dead, Paul, all dead. Killed by Great Whites in the space of a couple of years.
Shortly before the latest attack, over on Instagram @sharkgirlmadison was warning of the likelihood of attacks, not by Great White, but by Bulls.

Lifeguards have cleared the water at Maroubra, beach closed.
That is an ugly thing and the thought of meeting those teeth in action, plain terrifying.

I’d say you’re 90% correct about People not having control. But there’s still a 10% of power on people’s hand. They can still get organised and pressure the politicians. And it’s even a demand that doesn’t involve loss of profits, so it shouldn’t be that hard to make the crooks agree with it. Even an argument can be made that controlling the shark population can be beneficial for costal communities, especially the ones with tourism as part of their economy, etc. Making the crooks shine their eyes.
It could have been a case of mistaken identity.

Maybe the 95% of people in Australia who don’t surf don’t give a shit about sharks doing what sharks do in their natural habitat. Sure some surfers care but most people don’t surf or dive or whatever else makes them prone to attacks. Here in California there are lots of attacks north of Pt Conception but there is no real call for action. If it starts happening in Huntington or San Clemente or anywhere in the OC that might change. I’m guessing even in Australia, shark attacks aren’t even in the top 10 of what most folks are concerned about.
