Grave fears for one of the world’s best waves earlier this week when a ninety-four-foot super yacht ran aground at Honolua Bay, the one-time site of the WSL’s women’s tour finale.
Videos on Instagram showed the four-bedroom, five-bath Nakoa high and dry on the rocks in front of where surfers paddle out to the world-famous righthand point.

The joint’s place in surf lore runs deep, as Matt Warshaw explains.
“It’s sometimes thought of as the coming-out location for the short surfboard, as Australians Bob McTavish and Nat Young rode the break in late 1967 on their new vee-bottom boards; footage of the two Aussies climbing and dropping across the transparent Honolua walls was used for the mindblowing final sequence to The Hot Generation (1968), which introduced the shortboard to much of the surf world. Honolua then became a favorite testing ground for the ongoing shortboard revolution.”
The four-time world champ Mark Richards says Honolua is” the ultimate wave; the best wave in the world.
Community reaction was, understandably, furious.
“Thanks elites…Your dream life fucks up our only life. Send dis guy back. With massive fines that go back to restoring land and water in Hawai’i. Too many fuck ups over here. We cannot overlook anymore.Barred. No can ever return.”
And, even though the boat’s owner Jim Jones said Nakoa wasn’t leaking, well, he was wrong.
Maui County Council member Tamara Paltin, who is president of the Save Honolua Coalition, said she watched local boats tried to pull the vessel off the reef, but “it just wasn’t budging at all.”
And, so, a salvage company is working like hell to remove the diesel and the boat.
It’s a complex job.
The de-fuelling is going to happen on land, a chopper dropping off the gear at the bottom of the cliff and then flying the fuel drums out.
As for getting the boat off the reef, they’re either going to tow it out from sea or drag it in from land.
After the boat’s gone, the Division of Aquatic Resources at the Department of Land and Natural Resources is gonna assess any damage caused to the reef by the boat and may hit the owner with “significant fines” and the cost of any repair measures.

One swell will “recover” this boat into a thousand pieces, easy to clean with weekend do gooder’s and plastic bags at low tide.

Kind of what has happened to Barbuda – only a few people could surf at Palmetto Point because it was a “secret spot” – having a hard time rallying support against development for a spot no one could surf except the privileged elite.
Secret spots suck – I could write a nice 1500 word essay on why they suck, but I want to be paid.
Some secrets are not localized. Not the same.
Get a boat. Lots of uncrowded waves out there if you have one.

Agree w/ you Barrelled. Paddle out, and you’ll find people from all over the world. Sat next to a humble Scotsman and just shot the shit on what it was like surfing Honolua vs Scottish reefs lol. Also, one of the few places on earth that makes me wonder if there really is a god … perfect wave in the perfect spot.
Stop by there in summer. Absolutely no waves. Its just a big snorkel spot and the reef ecosystem is fairly abundant.

Likely leaking from the stabilisers that were ripped off.
The fuel tanks aren’t likely to be compromised even if the lower hull is punctured.
But- they could be if it’s left for much longer.

Correct Astro…..I’ve commissioned, sea trialed and delivered a few of these types of “vessels” and they really aren’t designed as strong sea going vessels. First decent bit of battering from a proper swell and she will begin to break up pretty quickly.
The real issue they have got here is that is almost impossible to tow these toy’s off of a grounding by the stern as there are no designed fixing points strong enough to take the Bollard Pull [ Tow rating] required to get it moving, also hindered by the remaining stern gear, rudder stocks, drive shafts, props etc.
That’d all be fucked by now, anyway…
The bow has a Sampson Post which is integrally tied into the construction and designed for towing the pieces of shit when they inevitably break down etc. My guess is they will try to drag the bow around facing a bit more seawards.
What they need is an ocean salvage tug with a large BP rating [80-150 BP] with the correct towing gear to come in a drag it around so the bow is facing out to sea. If they tried to go stern first with one of those big salvage buggers, they would probably tear the stern off of it. [ Pro salvage skippers would not even try it]
For a one off salvage tug job, old mate is looking anywhere between $50k and $100k per day, port to port, plus fuel so he really is in a world of wallet hurt…..to begin with.
Besides this, the vessel will immediately be placed under arrest until ALL costs are paid, by the owners, to all parties involved, and that’s besides the amount of pineapples that will be inserted by Flag State and his Classification Society….
Once that’s all over, he can start his repairs……
He’ll be bankrupt by that point. Sounds like this is a business that owns it, not a rich software dickhead. Sure the day rental rates are ridiculous but these sorts of boats cost a fortune to run and maintain – plus fuel, crew, etc. Going to be tough to survive this one.

Sorry Astro, but I’m going to disagree with you on your assessment that that isn’t diesel. From my experience that is off-road diesel. It’s dyed red to indicate that road tax hasn’t been payed on it. They can bust you if it’s found in the tank of your road vehicle. I purchase hydro fuel regularly and have never seen it red. It’s the color of veggie oil. The only other red fluid I see is transmission fluid.
It also isn’t acting like hydro fluid. I can’t adequately explain it, but hydro fluid’s viscosity would keep it up higher on top of the water (I’m going on a video clip I saw of the slick). I unfortunately have seen too many hydro fluid and diesel spills and this really looks like diesel.
It doesn’t take long for the reef to grind it’s way into the guts of the boat and tear up the fuel tanks.
Diesel is it’s own kinda sucky in the intertidal zone. Because it’s thinner than other oils it spreads out and seems to disappear. In reality it’s just penetrated deep into the nooks and crannies and will reappear when the surf gets bigger.
