Attention-starved giant manta ray steals spotlight from Florida surfer doing his very best: “It wasn’t until I reviewed the photo that I saw what was going on in the background!”

Rude.

And there you are, in central Florida, doing the absolute best job you possibly can. Surfline calling 2 – 3 and getting it very wrong, per the norm. But you are a surfer and from central Florida so paddle out anyhow into the unseasonable chill. Excited.

You notice a man sitting on the beach snapping photos, focusing on the lineup and think, “If I get a good one maybe he’ll get a shot?”

And like that, as if summoned, a wave comes directly your way. You paddle, pop up, wiggle a turn then another, bash off the lip maybe and feel like Kelly Slater himself, though then get stuck behind the whitewash for a little too long but still whoosh out and finish with a serviceable cutback. Not the best you’ve ever done but there were certainly some moments and you look toward the beach at the man snapping photos and hope.

Later that evening, your jaw drops to the floor as you see a photo of yourself from earlier, on the wave where you wiggled and bashed and cutback. Except the image captures none of those. It captures you behind the whitewash but still. A surf shot of you on the local news.

Then you hear the news anchor talking about the “viral photobombing giant manta ray” that has “captured hearts around the world” and your eyes wander up.

You see the attention-starved bastard poking his head above the water, pulling all focus.

The news anchor continues, reading amazed comments from Facebook like, “Wow, I’ve seen whales, sharks and small fish jumping but first time I’ve heard about Manta Rays jumping…great photo.” and “Awesome shot. We were sitting at a club watching it jump repeatedly. He would jump 2-3 times, then an hour later, same thing. He didn’t wander very far.”

The news anchor then interviews the photographer, Rusty Escandell, who owns a local automotive business. He says, “To be frank with you, I was actually focusing on the surfer. I was doing a burst, catching several frames, and it wasn’t until I got home and I was reviewing the pictures that I actually saw what was happening in the background.”

What is happening in the background, though, is all anyone cares about and your moment is ruined forever.

Damn giant manta rays.

dang man! Surfline’s 2-3 is EXACTLY what I love surfing (longboard) but I’ll probably be getting a softtop here soon. Gotta support the local surfshop down in Duck, NC. 🤙🤙🌊

That happened to me in 1976 at Canaveral (Cocoa Beach) Pier. I was out alone and facing the east when she popped out 40′ from me, I turned and paddled and caught a wave that a school of mullet was also riding and running from that ray. Close to nature is the best.

Reminds me a bit of speed flying for some reason, the skiers with the mini paragliders. Also, I quite like this, minimalist, and the upper body strength required is beyond the remit of your average joe. Thanks for the share.

I love when you see politicians get interviewed and they always have to put some poor lesser ranked officials head in the frame behind
Thats got to be the worst job in politics…there’s no way to look good in that situation

that’s a picture of a ray jumping and the surfer happens to be in the foreground. if its not the photographer needs to work on his timing.

Ask surf ads and channel bottom, it’s their home break. Seems like those East Coast beach breaks can have their days, especially Narrabeen. I’ve watched the surf fest QS that’s held there every year and it’s OK. Not as bad as Brazil or Huntington.

We’ve just entered into a 4-5 day swell and rain event. Howling winds, dead onshore. Currently sounds like my house is going through a car wash. All bets are off in terms of what the banks/sand situation will be until it’s finished. And with how ~moist~ this summer’s been I wouldn’t be surprised if the weather continues like this into the waiting period. Uh oh!

This gets me stoked: there’s a thing called crowd funding. It’s apparently described as when members of a crowd pitch in small bits of money so as to attain something any individual member of that crowd could/does-not want to attain alone. And such a technique was used to attain a subscription to the website of the Aussie former pro-surf chick who licks her butt-plugs. If that’s not a reason to be stoked, then damn. Just…damn

laugh all you want, but my dad turned 75 and wanted to take the grandkids to somewhere cool, so Atlantis in the Bahamas it was, god i hate islands that don’t have waves… in any case the place was pretty fucking cool.. the aquarium stuff that was outside was intense and they had two locked up imprisioned manta’s that they fed a few times a day, the dudes would swim through atlantis all day and then i guess they let them free every 20 years or so.. and they tell you tales of how they are fine in the wild feeding for themselves and stuff, right after you play with the dolphins

The more important question was whether you were able to score some seedy, stick laden ganja from the bell hops, taxi drivers or bartenders? I don’t think I could tolerate a place like without it!!

naw, i was playing blackjack with my old man.. i paid for my families part of the trip. me the wife and kids stayed in the old nassau for a few nights on the old beach in a formerly glorious boutique hotel that has started to rot from the inside. the photos looked nice..LOL.. it was classic. then you travel over the bridge and see how a little island stole away billions from the little town back on the other side.. amazing.. destroyed the old glory

I’m sure the politicians that received kickbacks from the Atlantis corporation called it “progress”. Sadly all my knowledge of the Bahamas comes from James Bond films, funk band Beginning of the End (apparently Nassau is funky) and former Laker center Mychal Thompson.

“Awesome shot. We were sitting at a club watching it jump repeatedly. He would jump 2-3 times, then an hour later, same thing. He didn’t wander very far.” – are they describing the 80s ASP tour lineup at the club? Take a shot, jump 2-3 times, repeat, don’t wander far from the bar…
