The mammy of Californian Griffin Colapinto, the kid who belted Brazilian Filipe Toledo for the second time in a final three days ago, has raised hell after Latin surf fans claimed the game was fixed in the gringo’s favour.

“Momma bear is on 🔥. I’ve been sitting on my hands for two days and I’m still angry. I don’t care if people think you got overscored! Whatever, it’s a surf contest. It’s meant to entertain. But the threats to the judges’ well being, to you, to other members of @wsl that should not be tolerated. And for others in top positions to post and add fuel to the fire, well that’s just irresponsible. Can we remember how blessed these surfers are please? Look around. There is a war, homelessness, people:children starving, and your win is motivating people to take to the streets? Are we living in the same universe? Wow! Unbelievable. I would like to see a camera in there. But I know they’d quickly become cannon fodder for the masses who don’t understand the need for the reflection and perspective that comes with being a head judge and working with a panel of humans each with their own viewpoints, gut feelings and opinions.
What we can confirm, is that buzzer beater/clutch moments are getting an inflated score. This is not in the criteria as far as I know, perhaps human nature/excitement in judging panel getting in the way. We can confirm there is a problem here, whether it’s on purpose or not, I find it bizarre that some people just will not admit it. I think there is more too it than this but this is one point I think that cannot be denied.
Humans in clutch situations will feel the energy in the moment. But it’s not some boardriders club contest on a Sunday afternoon two beers down. These guys are the best in the World, they’ve paid their dues with thousands of hours head judging in their own Countries. Reality is they’re just working in the status quo with the tools they have available.
So they question remains how they got it wrong. Let’s focus on Jack Robinson.

Something tells me that I shouldn’t come here and comment and add to the mess I probably made worse. But, my comment was not meant to defend Griffin’s win. I don’t care if people think he wasn’t deserving; but not in a “let them eat cake” kind of way. What I meant to convey was that the violent rhetoric over a surf event is mind blowingly stupid. What I meant to convey is that the win doesn’t matter, it shouldn’t matter, at least not matter so much people want to turn violent. BTW Griffin is receiving violent, gruesome threats to his life and no one is doing anything to address the seriousness of the situation. Am I hysterical? Am I unhinged? Yeah, probably, but I am not going to apologize for raising hell. If I embarrass Griffin it certainly isn’t the first time, I assumed he got used to it. as most will now know, he got none of his chill from my DNA. I am not chill, have never been chill and don’t mind letting people know if I not happy with something. If people still think the comment to his post was motivated by ego, take a look at his stuff…did anyone even know Griffin and Crosby had a mom? I am busy with my own work/life. My comment was motivated by a mix of intense fear and anger. Unfortunately, I wish I was as afraid yesterday as I am today because I would have never commented. Chronic fanatism is an issue in Brazil, be it on religion, politics or sports. Highly negatively correlated with levels education. Surely all these threats are done online and I’d say 99.9% of them wouldn’t even have the money in their mouth to go out of their way to confront Griff in person. But good on ya for calling out how dumb any sort of fanatism truly is.

But it is possible and ultimately they’re living the dream travelling the World, if one rocks the boat to much it could mean the end of that dream and back to laying bricks.

Do you think the judging was correct? It’s irrelevant where the judges are from, they are all employees of the WSL following the direction of the WSL. We do know the head judge sits there and tells them the scoring range the judges have to be in.

Been around for a minute and have forgotten more than I remember…it started (on that particular trip) with “don’t worry, everything will be ok for you to come back to Brazil”, and ended abruptly after his first heat with a crazy afternoon all the way to being “escorted” to the airplane door to head home…. I was also at the OP Pro and was right there when the “riot” ignited, but this had a very different feeling… it’s a long story that really deserves it’s own write up.

Yep, that happened as well, early 90’s, I think it was a year or two later after the Shimooka thing, not Rio… If I remember right, decided he was going to chase his local opponent up and down the beach with priority for the second half of the heat. I recall pulling up to the site right after it happened as the vehicle he was hiding in was fleeing the scene in quite a hurry.
