Troublesome times.
There is absolutely no denying that we live in extremely fraught times. Tensions high. Margin for error non-existent. Stray remarks that were once casually disregarded or ignored are now elevated to the apex of criminality and treated as such. Capital punishment. Oh there are a million and one traps in which to fall, racial, gender, political, religious, tonal, contextual plus any combination, and fall, daily, broadcasters do.
Those who make their living behind a microphone are, of course, in a much riskier position than the general public. Days ago an Oakland A’s on-air commentator uttered a slur and was suspended indefinitely. Hours ago the longtime anchor of New York’s “Eyewitness This Morning,” Ken Rosato, was immediately fired after making an “off-color” remark that was picked up by a hot mic.
Gone.
Speculation ran wild that he too expressed a slur though that notion was struck down by his representative who released a statement reading, “Being fired for any racial slur is 100 percent inaccurate and untrue. Ken Rosato had a benchmark of 20 years at WABC of supporting all equality.”
Whatever the case, the World Surf League commentary team of Joe Turpel, Ronald Blakey, Kaipo Guerrero, Peter Mel, Rosy Hodge, Strider Wasilewski et. al. must certainly feel even more unstable this morning. Having to fill endless hours of air during professional surfing competitions, like, endless endless, the climate is absolutely ripe for one of them to “misspeak” and be relegated to the margins of Page Six before receiving ruthless execution at the hands of Chief of Sport Jessi Miley-Dyer.
While “hand jams” and “foamball monsters” toe the line of appropriate, the biggest current worry is likely the inability of any one of the crew to describe Brazilian surfers without using the word “passionate.”
Othering.
Which is to say nothing about the sort of hot mic incident that undid Ken Rosato.
But do you imagine that the World Surf League Santa Monica headquarters has a running compendium of troublesome talk from each that is used in contract negotiations?
If we were to place odds on who would get fired for unacceptable speech, would Guerrero or Wasilewski be the favorite?

I tuned in early to a comp once and it was just the stationary early morning camera, but the mics were on. Didn’t think much of it, so wasn’t really paying much attention, but then my ears pricked-up when I heard Pottz talking rough, cussing and laughing. Then suddenly there was silence, then Pottz muffled, sounding really annoyed, saying “You’re kidding!?” I wish I’d caught what he said. My money was on a Rosy jibe.
People can downvote all they want. I cannot believe I have wasted my time posting about politics and religion (prior posts) on a website. Absolutely pointless. But I realize that now and am done.
I do not support Biden. I don’t know why you I assume I support him just because I am calling out Trump on his b.s. election fraud. 100% agree we are not a democracy (though I did use that term to mean elections via citizen votes) because California and other states have taxation without representation proportionate to the population. It is absolute b.s. The population of Montana is a medium sized city in CA, but it gets two senators.

January 6 was not a petition to redress grievances. And citizens cannot just storm government buildings, pepper spray police, etc. The people who did similar acts during the 2020 rioting were wrong as well, and the politicians who did not denounce the rioting were wrong as well. But I do not support them or Trump. Why do you? There are other republican candidates.
I must have forgotten the Gore and Clinton supporters who violently stormed the capitol. Plus, Gore conceded even though he had a valid dispute of the results. I am talking about modern times, not the founding of the U.S. A lot of violence occurred in U.S. history obviously to keep people from voting, amongst political rivals, etc.
Every State gets two Senators. That’s the idea. Representation relative to population is the House of Representatives. And CA lost one seat in Congress due to State population DECLINE. California has 52 Representatives in the House. Montana has 2. Two!!!!
I know the entire history behind the idea, but that does not make it right. As I said, taxation without representation. Plus, the electoral votes are also not equally proportionate to population when compared state to state. In other words, your vote counts more or less depending on your state.

Sam. To be very clear. Conscience-wise, I’m 100% fine. Sleep like a baby every night. This website and its contents will remain unchanged regardless of your opinion. You’ve been welcome to play but you’re adding nothing of value below the stories. 90% of your comments are just repeating the same tired lines over and over, or asking for us to respond to your pointless questioning. It is a typical ploy engaged by people to correct their opponent while skirting the actual issues. The left is famous for it.
A Democracy as it was when Athens was a small city-state was really quite interesting.
A citizen could be randomly tapped to sit in on a particular role and be asked to be the arbiter. A couple of problems were that not everyone was a citizen (i.e. the slaves, foreigners), and Athens soon got so big that no man could be considered to be an expert in everything. They soon realised that appointing random people to positions of power, although “democratic”, wasn’t the most efficient way of making decisions, let alone formulating any kind of lasting policy.
They came up with the idea of an assembly, where all citizens could come and discuss issues and put it to a vote.
In the end the oligarchs (rich landowners) stacked the votes and got their way. Sound familiar??? 😀

Just like other very similar Polynesian languages like Hawaiian and Maori (also many Asian and (non-Germanic based) European ‘romantic’ languages), it can be easily broken down into parts, and always remember that the vowels are pronounced as Aah (A), Ayy (E), Eee (I), Awe (O), Ooo (U).

The ‘Chopoo’ mispronunciation is due to the slurred speech of someone early on in contact with surfmag editors who couldn’t speak properly, in a way not dissimilar to the way Mexicans pronounce Spanish more accurately than the majority of Spaniards, since those in Spain had to speak with a lisp so as not embarrass King Philip (I forget the number), who spoke with a lisp…
