Betty is the dark horse among the new generation. Everyone’s frothing on Caity, Molly and Erin Brooks but Betty’s right there in the big barrels, progressive turns. The only thing I haven’t seen from her is airs
Yeah I thought BettyLou was a one trick pony when she came on the scene. Basically just a chick that charges Pipe. But she’s proven pretty legit all around, but def not anywhere near Sims of Erin Brooks yet
Sims can surf Pipe but still enjoys ripping Oside Pier. This works to her advantage. The Hawaiians have to learn to milk slop and most of them don’t look like they like it much.
Yeah 100%. That’s a disadvantage the Hawaiians have. Coming up in heavy hollow reef breaks ain’t exactly good prep for transitioning to the “dream tour” where you surf mostly dogshit
Unlike many, I don’t object to the Trestles surf off in principle.
I just object to how they don’t wait for 6 ft+ faces, and they hold the last, big heat of the year at the time of day that anyone familiar with the place goes into town for burritos.
I know everyone is eager to get to their beers and bong hits, but imagine the final heat of the year, at the Magic Hour, when the surf glasses off beautifully, instead of in mid afternoon during the short window when Trestles sucks.

Trestles on a solid south on a glassy evening would be epic. It’s still not Pipe, obviously, but it’s something people can actually get behind. The mid-day conclusion in crossed up dogshit marred by south wind is awful no doubt
I figure they could really hype it up, too.
Take an afternoon intermission, sell merch, have a DJ or a couple bands, shuffle dance-off, maybe get local Greyson Fletcher and team to skate, have some good food for sale, and count down to the last big men’s and women’s heats of the year. Could even get local people to leave work early and go down there, when they wouldn’t go in the morning.
I think the WSL is really missing out on turning that last heat into a big deal. If they’re going to do the surf-off, then milk it for all it’s worth.
That’s what Red Bull would do. And they seem to know a few things about hyping sports events.
Makes me think about all the great surfers (local and international) who grow up surfing weak beachbreak waves where you have to make your own speed, race down the line to make sections, make the most of poor conditions…
I’m just thinking that Gen Z girls got names stolen from the 19th century.

17 is young but she didn’t just start surfing a year before or anything.
