That crew is over 50 and sitting in cars at the rock, still listening to Sublime and wondering why their youth evaporated.
It feels like the skill margin between this contest and what you can see out of a 16 year olds in the NSSA or USSF is smaller than it has ever been. They are doing the same tricks with the same style, these guys are just able to do it on slightly worse waves giving them more opportunities to get the score that will get you through the heat.
And then the gap between these guys and Medina etc is a thousand miles wide.

Surfed Morro Bay on my California bucket-list pilgrimage back in 2012. Watched my soccer/football team play a match in a bar in town and then drove out to the Bay. It was really quite beautiful and waves were overhead and fun. A Whitey killed a guy there some years later.
As beautiful as it is (the whole PCH drive), it doesn’t hold a candle to the sheer beauty of the Aussie east coast on a sunny day. Maybe only because it was almost always a bit hazy, even on the clearer days.
That East coast is beautiful, especially around Forester. Full of sharks now unfortunately from what I gather
