The debate as to whether surfing belongs or not has reached the pages of our most cherished newspaper!
Oh the surfing x olympics debate is priceless! It is wonderful! And the debate gets to rage for another four full years before Kanoa Igarashi paddles out in Japanese beach suck to compete for …. Japan? The United States? Who knows! And Cork Carroll doesn’t care!
Let’s read from today’s Wall Street Journal (a newspaper I love)!
After failing to win admittance to the last five Summer Olympics, surfing on Wednesday could be anointed a new sport at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
But don’t expect surfers of the world to unite in celebration. “Surfing is too cool for the Olympics,” said former professional surfer Corky Carroll, arguing that surfers don’t belong in any club that includes the likes of synchronized swimmers.
Any time a new sport enters the Olympics there are naysayers. But as the International Olympic Committee prepares on Wednesday to approve five new sports to debut at the Tokyo Games, an extraordinary degree of ambivalence, even hostility, is brewing within two of them—surfing and skateboarding.
“Skateboarding is not a ‘sport’ and we do not want skateboarding exploited and transformed to fit into the Olympic program,” says an online petition addressed to Thomas Bach, president of the IOC. The petition has gained nearly 7,000 of 10,000 hoped-for signatures.

How adorable is Corky Carroll?

Regardless of how I feel about the Olympics, Rupert Murdoch and his Wall St Journal can fuck the fuck off.
I thought those were goal posts, didn’t realize that’s corky.
I’ve actually scored a pretty nuts rivermouth just outside Tokyo. Only thing was said river was full of plastic, most with some sort of bug eyed anime mascots. Like Tiger said, I’m not the biggest proponent of this development, but I will watch the shit out of it.
Wasn’t Corky from ‘Life Goes On’ named after Corky Carroll? They are equally as adorable, Chas.
Surfing’s cool!!! what are we all four years old for fuck’s sake.
Who fucking cares; it’s out of our control, and getting worked up one way or another is a waste of time . . . but, I guess, that’s what the internet is for . . . so, I say, fuck anything that creates more donkeys on planes destined for Hawaii . . . but, again, who fucking cares bc there ain’t shit I can do about it, and, I’m gonna continue to be nice to donkey tourists bc it ain’t their fault their donkeys . . . It’s the mother fucking olympics fault, and Quicksilver, and . . . ??? Duke?!!! It’s his fault too!!! Damn!! Hawaii people are at fault for sharing surfing with the world?!!! Ah shit, this is too much for me!
Surfing has about as much business as canoeing does in the Olympics. Sorry, I love my sport to much to see it pitted against such frivolity as table tennis, speed walking, badminton, anything to do with horses, etc.
Fuck Corky Carroll…… Fuck the IOC……. If surfing wants to be an Olympic sport and they can find a way to put each countries top four rated surfers in decent surf, I will fucking love it and tune in. What is this the possible harm of an event without a $$$$ purse and the chance for a country like Costa Rica to knock off the top dogs…..we all talk about my country is better than yours……the olympics could be the way to settle it.
Can we decide now what the “political” angle will be for the surfers because it seems every, single, fucking event has some sort of political bullshit associated with it.
Is Jordy prepared for the apartheid questions from before he was born?
Will Kanoa be asked about Japanese imperialism?
We know that the Brazilians won’t be asked about rampant poverty and their corrupt government.
Or will the coup de grace be Slater’s ridiculous conspiracy theories?
