I dug into the archives and found this piece from Derek Rielly from two-ish years ago…

Derek then goes on to quote the great Shane Dorian who says:
The place is a logistical nightmare. We lost a couple of skis. And, it’s really hard to do rescues there, really really hard. Each surfer needs his own water rescue guy on a ski. At all times. It’s really super dangerous. There’s a cliff there. All that shit.
Scary! And whispers of Naz not being up to standard faded. Right? Is my narrative correct? Is Nazaré now accepted on equal footing with Maverick and Jaw?

The only thing good about Portugal or Brazil for that matter are their beautiful women, everything else sucks including their waves. Last years Jaws was epic!
The last eddie was my favorite big wave event. When Mason’s wave came in I thought he was going to die, I thought for sure he was going to get a 2 wave hold down. And Jaws is more exciting than Nazare, I don’t think anyone ever is going to get the wave of their life at Nazare as far as big wave surfers go.
I liked the Nazare better, it looks like a little more up to fate. Jaws is more predictable, a little better groomed. I want crushing gnarly waves on my big wave tour.
Even still its just a drop and your out running wash. Maybe a bottom turn but not much else. Macking Teahupoo, Jaws, and Puerto are actually decent to watch.
Finally back to good ole beach grit, and fuck no nazare isnt close to jaws. Is it scary as fuck? Yes. Do people die? Yes. Is it fun to watch? Absolutley not! Its probably terrifying to surf, and anyone who has charged it is a fucking legend, but its boring as fuck. Jaws on the other hand, late drops, massive barrels, and people going over the falls. Much more exciting to watch. Now Nazare shore break? Thats a different beast. That shit is insane!
Did you even watch the contest? Besides the massive barrels, Nazaré ticked all the boxes, and added a level of craziness to the rescues. It’s too bad the timezone is awkward for most of the surfing world to watch live.
Yeah, still boring as fuck. Long drawn out bottom “leans” to big ass foam washes. No thanks ill see 10 sec clips on my feed for the next year as they try to ram this event down my throat.
