You may chortle at Kelly Slater’s overt activism but I stand and applaud his every social edict. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Like a baroque poet. And in our cynical age that is as refreshing as a cool glass of spring water.
Did you happen to see his Instagram message from two days ago praising the closure of the Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus? Oh… here it is!
Hopefully this isn’t #FakeNews and people are really waking up enough to see that the enslavement, torture, and abuse animals suffer for our pleasure is no longer an acceptable norm. In fact, I would argue that all zoos and animal attractions not dedicated specifically to conservation and rehabilitation of animals should be dismantled and shut down. And I’m sure I’ll cop plenty of flack for saying that. I mean, people just gotta have their #DancingBears and Tigers jumping thru fiery hoops and Elephants doing handstands, ya know. #RinglingBrothersCircus and #Seaworld, #ByeFelicia.
And I am totally still standing and applauding but my face is also a little scrunched up. Like “Hmmm?” Because… ummmm… doesn’t shuttering all zoos and animal attractions (not dedicated specifically to conservation and rehab of animals) seem baby bathwatery?

I mean… aren’t animals also and sometimes funny? I went to the Siegfried and Roy white tiger zoo thing in Las Vegas recently and the white tigers were laying about and looked very comfortable. I enjoyed looking at them and almost poking one with a stick. They seemed to enjoy being looked at and almost scratched.
Wouldn’t this world be a touch grayer without the Sig and Roy white tiger zoo thing in Las Vegas?
Or bear wrestling in Russia?
Or dancing elephants in Thailand?
Or gator goofin’ in Florida?
In conclusion, Kelly Slater is right. We, as humans, have the obligation and the duty to play with animals in any way we see fit since we beat them at evolution. We can dress them in clothing if we want or make them jump through fiery hoops and the closure of the Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus, a historic institution, is a failure of the will.
It shall be missed.

But Slater did take it way too far… I mean zoos too? Conservation isn’t free, and viewing enclosures allows income, and also lets the public get a tangible look at the importance of conservation. And without zoos, well, a lot of these animals would be made into traditional Chinese medicine.
Don’t tell me zoos are a good thing. A few weeks back a polar bear died in a fucking zoo in arid Argentina in Mendoza after 22 long years alone in a concrete pit. You think he wanted to be there? At least look it up check out his face. There are countless examples like that like giraffes in Copenhagen or lions in scandinavia, I mean what the fuck.
I see your point, but zoos are not the way to go for protecting wild animals mostly programmed to live in thousands of acres of water/land. Sanctuaries are, if they are properly protected with gunmen patrol etc…
True, sanctuaries are the best. But they are costly to maintain, with security and all that. I mean its the ideal place but zoos are still good to conserve endangered species, and good is better than nothing.
The animals are kinda miserable, but better that than the entire species fading from existence. But yeah some zoos suck, especially in non first world nations. Difficult to put a blanket judgement on all zoos, theres some amazing ones (Berlin) and some that are just as bad as a circus.
Yeah, zoos really suck because animals die. If only they were in the wild, they would live free, without the terror of being devoured, never be injured or suffer starvation, and they would all hold paws singing Hakuna Matada.

Hunters and fisherman do provide the vast majority of conservation funding through license purchase, management stamps, ammo taxes, and heaven forbid gun purchases.

You are not very well informed my friend. The biggest ally the wild has is the hunter. Go do some research for yourself. Takes about 30 seconds on the Google box. If not for hunters there would be no game left, nor anywhere for them to live. I’m not sure how it works in OZ, but here in the US that’s the case.

Ok, really good point regarding the importance of having the hook and bullet crew as an ally in the preservation of wild lands. But I do most of my animal killing under the authority of a scientific collector’s permit and take pretty strong exception to the notion that “If not for hunters there would be no game left, nor anywhere for them to live.” It takes a consortium of local/state/federal regulators, scientists, and support from the general public– hunters and tree-huggers– to maintain populations healthy enough so that a percentage can be culled for the sake of sport (but you better fucken eat it!). Nuisance species excluded, fire away, within reason. I didn’t mention the non-profits…they do a quite a bit of effective lobbying, unfortunately not always based on good science.
Well said. I certainly don’t claim to know all about the issue, just do the best I can. I’m a hunter and fisherman that is concerned with conservation. I try to be as informed as possible when it comes to species that I’m pursuing for the purpose of not only sport, but food as well. Absolutely agree that to not eat the kill is a travesty and those who kill strictly for sport should not be allowed to live. I suppose my comment was a bit too narrow, but my objective was to shed a better light on hunting/fishing. Always do your best to harvest only what you need to eat right then, never stock pile it. Try and harvest the animals that are beyond breading capability. In short, manage the area of harvest and always abide by the laws set by management officials.
the average fisherman or hunter, commercial or sport, cares a lot more about these things than the general population ever will, and yet they are consistently painted as part of the problem by “mainstream environmentalists” and sometimes the scientific community. more poaching is stopped by ethical hunters and fisherman than by any other organization/greenie group/ or wildlife enforcement agency.
