We’re a little late to jump on the short Dream Bars by filmmaker Perry Gershkow but it’s something you’ll like, if you haven’t seen it already. It features the one-time WCT surfer Nat Young and current world number four Kolohe Andino hitting sand banks near the Californian city of Saint Frank.
It’s an interesting study. Do you remember when Nat soared on the ratings while his pal Kolohe stammered and everyone said he’d never make it but he persisted and now he looms as an almost-title contender? The contrast between the two is marked. Different stances, yeah, but while one jitterbugs and works himself up into something of a panic on a wave, the other draws an almost old fashioned line.
Who is who? Which is which? Watch!
I suppose the ball and chain of getting paid to surf requires such actions. When I was a grom I dreamed of getting paid to surf, like most. Now, I wouldn’t wish for that at all. I feel it would suck the fun right out of my favorite leisure time activity. Living under the microscope of dicks like myself. Judging every action or reaction. Sounds like a such a drag. So I say we are the ones who truly live the dream, free from the expectations of the cruel surfing industry.

Guy in the water with camera, drone camera, guy on the shore with camera, distant guy with camera, and kolohe with sucker cam. I half way assume that the shots he got were all B-roll otherwise they make the clip, right? When did it become so vital to suck on that thing near constantly? Don’t get me wrong, Anthony walsh’s clips kill, but dern if it don’t look so stupid. Surfing was good though.
Though you may not believe it, I do try not to be a cunt in my comments on here. But… Nat Young, I’m glad he dropped off the ratings, boring in the fucking extreme, now obviously there was some issues at home which I sympathise with, but how did this guy ever look like a world beater is beyond me. The Californian DeSouza. Andino on the other hand, much maligned but but yet very underrated! Haven’t watched the video and may not bother, having a boring night out on the piss and finding myself in the chipper pretty early on my way home (still got that buzzed out drunk- feeling like a winner champ feeling) . What was I talking about again? Where is the Carlos Munoz story? Come on! Is Chas trying to stay in with the Volcom guys as he is writing a book on coke and surfing?
Must say though that was some of nat young’s best surfing!!! I guess being off tour is better for overall performance
“How did this guy ever look like a world beater is beyond me. The Californian DeSouza.” That’s funny, I seem to remember that DeSouza character winning a world title in the not too distant past. So maybe Nat has a title in his future too?
Stranger things have happened! He surfs very conservatively in his heats, doesn’t make good viewing!
I know the whole naming spots kerfuffle was so two days ago… But that left!!
