Surfing's greatest singer/songwriter to make grand debut on world stage!
It was reported here just two days ago that the world’s greatest surfer would appear in the Super Bowl this coming Sunday. More people watch on television than anything else and so more people will see him paddling his surfboard to the horizon singing the song “I like beer.”
Now, the novice might find it amusing that Kelly Slater is paddling and singing but the surf enthusiast will know that our icon is as much a singer as he is a surfer and let us take a trip down memory lane beginning with The Surfers.
You, of course, recall the super band featuring Peter King, Rob Machado and Kelly Slater. Rolling Stone magazine described the second album thusly:

Derek Rielly says that he has the voice of an angel and I think it would be impossible to disagree. All of America will be treated to it, anyhow, this Sunday.

That might have something to do with his OK band skills. Using recycled alpaca hair/ fish net strings on his guitar is probably producing less than ideal acoustic resonations. But maybe virtuostic rapping is good with it. Plus, chia seeds for guitar picks is madness. They’re so tiny. Healthy sure. But fuck. Auto-tune will be his saving grace.

I don’t know why he was tapped to sing I like beer when he’s said numerous times how little he likes to drink. Wouldn’t Noa Deane or SealTooth have been a better, or at least more authentic choice to promote inebriation than someone who basically abstains?

This is a very good point. Has Slater sold out?? Promoting a product that he does not believe in himself. I thought he had talked about his principles and how Outerknown might not make as much profit, but they could feel good that they really stuck to their guns and had a product that was sustainable and that they really believed in?
Beer is good business. Stadium events good. NFL juggernaut good. WSL have their eyes on the prize. Stadium surfing. Jerry Jones’ stadium would be perfect with the big fucking video screens.
Be careful with Noa though, pretty sure he’s part of that shitty pink & purple traction pad group RAGE or GERA, whichever is the most ironic. They Rage F’in Hard, I saw Noa actually pour a brewsky ON his surfboard in one of their ads!! That is hardcore RAGING!!
