Not this coming weekend but the following will feature the Super Bowl in the United States of America and also the official end of the professional football season. Fans will flock to bars, restaurants, parties and homes to watch and super fans will dry their eyes after the game, knowing that they will not get to see any more football for many bleak months. Their lives will be hollow shells. They’ll commit unspeakable crimes just to silence the voices.
Well, it’s a great thing that professional surfing has no offseason. The fan can find satisfaction every week of the entire year and this week satisfaction comes to Maroubra.
You may best know the seaside hamlet as home to the famed Bra Boys but it also has nuggety little waves and, this week, Keanu Asing. Let us read the World Surf League press release together.
Some of the world’s most accomplished surfers will venture to Maroubra tomorrow for the start of the 2019 Carve Pro World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 1000 rated event.
The elite four-day QS1,000 rated event will form the first of three stops on the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series and will take place in Maroubra Beach from the 23rd January – 26th January 2019. The event will also kickstart the new calendar year for the 2019 WSL Australia / Oceania QS series.
Entered into the Men’s division is a range of former WSL Championship Tour surfers including Keanu Asing (HAW), Connor O’Leary (Cronulla, NSW), Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head, NSW) and Mitch Crews (Tugan, Qld).
“I’m stoked to get to Australia and kick off my year in my sponsor’s event,” said Asing. “I hope I can get the ball rolling early in 2019, especially after some less than ideal results last year. I hope I can use this event to build my heat confidence for the entire year.”

I lost a pair of slippers (zoris, flip flops) in the beach there a few years ago. They had astroturf on the foot-bed.

I’m a big fan of Carve . They have made money quietly all over the world and have never forgotten the area where they started in 98 supporting the boardriders clubs and core surfers of all ages , especially in Sydney’s South and on the South Coast .
Maroubra , though I have only ever surfed it in contests , has a lot of character and characters and saw a great from Avoca and another from the South Coast doing lung exercises in the carpark before a pro am final mid 80s . Got harassed with Dog by a 12 year old kid who told us ( as he should ) to fuck off back to Cronulla . Fled from possible disaster after the boys from the Bra were not happy when a surf league rubber against Elouera did not go their way and was on the beach ( and the free beer ) for a wonderful QS event in 2004 run by my mate which turned into an air show between the GOAT and Kirk Flintoff . Ya just never know what you might see there , so fuck yeah I am excited .

He da Man ! Good day at Maroubra for The Godfather of EBC with his charges O’Leary ,busting out his air game ( FUCK YES ), and Last year’s winner Shane Campbell taking a convincing heat win.

That tail flicker on video named Taj Burrow looked like a super fast power surfer live and that power surfer on video named Kelly Slater looked like a tail flicker live. I was impressed how much speed & rail Taj used in a turn and wasn’t impressed how Kelly just surfed off his tail.
Definitely not famous ,just a crusty old stay at home dad . Taj’s backhand surfing in that event was amazing . Kelly plodded along and would get a 5.4 needing a 5.35 but turned it up in the final doing some crazy huge backside air to beat an on fire Flintoff who was busting huge Alley Oops on the first section than finishing strong . Even more amazing was Kelly main lining a big packet of cookies in less than 30seconds in the competitors area just after the final . Fucking Cookie Monster watch out …….
Im back in the area after about 20 years since my last jaunt. The bra has changed man. A lot! It’s yoga babes and adult learners now.
