Any student of the professional surfing game knows that surfing legend Kelly Slater’s Instagram feed is the most entertaining space of all. Better than Rottnest Island, better than unboxing with Koa Smith, better than Zeke Lau as Ultimate Surfer.
The 11x World Champion dishes out a sometimes daily, sometimes weekly, helping of unfiltered opinion, advice, criticism, direction on issues as wide ranging as Britain’s royal family, Elon Musk’s cryptocurrency strategy and the silliness of those who believe the earth is flat amongst many, many other things.
Wonderful.
But his nearly 3 million Instagram followers were treated to a shock this morning when Slater cryptically, and without elaboration, posted the cover of Mark Meadows’ book titled How to Build Self-Discipline: Resist Temptations and Reach your Long-Term Goals.

I scored some small venues over the years, but it was the big stadium shows I avoided I suppose. (in editing this mess, I realized I have boycotted the huge shows, stadium style , and have managed to score some good shows at smaller places.
Ticket prices have kinda always bugged me though, as im a cheapskate)
So much pre-show prep, haha chaos of intoxicants etc….then concert craziness itself…too loud, shitty mix, cant see, other losers like me everywhere…..and then the nextday…kinda, what happened? I think I may have some sort of “large crowd” social phobia or something. Always feel like something bad is just about to happen in a big crowd. ( nowadays? staying home seems ok)
This was mostly 70’s 80’s erly 90s so things were hectic…..maybe me having tickets to the Allman Bros right before he died had something to do with it? Man, that was a weird show….and then my dude Hendrix died?
Or maybe my last Zappa show, San Diego, (I was a full on hard core fan)
I’m tripping and all the biker/drunks were yelling play “yellow snow” and he wanted to play complex orchestral pieces….Zappa felt the vibe and told the band to play a 3 chord headbanger and he just did some hideously loud guitar leads to placate them, which worked, man place was on edge….another weird one. Altamont always on peoples minds I guess….heavy biker presence in San Diego at that time.
I did catch a “few” shows at the Arlington, great sound there, but sort of better suited to acoustic stuff, or movies. I think I saw Lou Reed there? fuck cant remember, but it felt like he was just going through the motions, you know the drill.
Did catch bluegrass legend and band Ralph Stanley at the Arlington, but the local band who came first tried harder and ripped it up!!
I got front row center ticket by accident, that was weird. Radio promo I think? Dropped my wallet walking to get my seat. Usher handed it to me….fuck me!! haha….shit happens eh?
Just decided I would buy records instead, get a nice stereo….. About 10 years ago tho, first SB bowl show was Robert Plant. Free tickets, what the heck.. Shit it was unbelievable, almost like seeing the original Led Zeppelin, crossed up with strange Moroccan sutff….Great sound, had a good time. Saw Brian Williams too, maybe 5 years ago paid for a date even!!! He did his Pet Sounds album and then of course all the classics to close the show. That was awesome too, cept the audience was all silver haired boomers like me, drinking wine!!! I have to admit, seeing him play Good Vibrations wasnt as bad, as I thought it would be. Everyone singing along… never thought I would see that! Always loved me some Beach Boys.

Thanks for the book recommendations Kelly Slater. I just bought six MM books, Kindle edition, $9.99. I haven’t started yet. I gotta think it’s gonna be more enlightening than time spent reading beach grit
I finally went to the bowl, after 30 yrs of boycotting concerts…..its kind of a nice place!! Lots of smoke nowadays…..Concerts are still kinda lame tho…IMO. (its complicated)

The picture of the guy on the cover of that book looks alot like one of Kelly’s slash/tailslide photos from the 90’s. Didn’t the ASP (or perhaps NSSA) use that same shot as their logo? I think Slater even has a statue in FL doing that same turn.

True story, the WSL and Kelly had a photo of mine taken down a few months ago on Redbubble of him doing some shitty cutback at the Quiksilver Pro on a dbah day over ten years ago. I have no idea why, shitty wave, but it actually use to sell pretty well. Moral of the story: Kelly is a cunt. Edit: I was going to argue that the WSL don’t own rights to a photo that was taken when the WSL doesn’t exist but I couldn’t be fucked.

Fuck me it would take hours to the find the original. It’s not my first rodeo with the WSL. I was shooting the Quiksilver for Stab and they sent the cops down to harass me in front of hundreds of people. Some cunt in the WSL told the cops I was representing myself as being with the WSL and harassing chicks. I told him I asked to take a photo and that it might end up on the stab website and he said I wasn’t doing anything wrong. But yeah having police looking through my camera in front of everyone was embarrassing. I was pretty close to knocking some WSL mofos out. Every chick I asked was stoked to have their photo taken. Of course they didn’t harrass the tracks photog secretly taking photos of chicks bending over. Bunch of useless cunts.
I’m actually fascinated by this tale of possible legal overreach by the WSL, regarding claiming ‘ownership’ or copyright breach of images that you (or other people) took on a public beach.
I’d be curious to hear what legal-minded commenters have to say regarding ‘personalities’ claiming ownership of their image etc. And any rights the WSL may or may not have of shots taken during any contest esp during ASP years.

I know you probably can’t be arsed fighting it, and I’m no lawyer but I really think they are grasping outside their fence in a desperate attempt to gain any sort of payment they can. Fuck them. It’s your picture. Unless you did it specifically in contract with the WSL then it’s not up to them to try and claim that you are abusing their IP. (I am certain also that I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about and just ranting)
You got it right the first time. I’m this instance I couldn’t be fucked. It was an old profile with old photos that I left up cause it kept selling. Even then I’m only making a few dollars a print. I personally don’t think the WSL will be around that much longer lol

Nah I don’t get customer information. So Redbubble takes the money, prints, sends it out etc and I get my cut at the end of the month. It’s print only. Its over ten years old now but kept selling.

When I was young growing up in Florida, I competed in the ESA. I was in boys when Slater was in junior men’s and one day while I was competing, my dad played golf and ended up getting paired up with Kelly and Sean. When he picked me up, he told me he played with them and said, “that Kelly may be a great surfer but he’s terrible at golf”. True story

Kelly is just trying to say that he’s read the book, and which only reaffirmed that he’s been going about this instant gratification (IG) thing the right way all along. You see, from Kelly’s perspective he’s been practicing self-discipline.
