Many months ago, the world’s greatest surfer took on Elon Musk in a battle over cryptocurrency investment strategies. Slater was angry that Musk for disallowing the popular Bitcoin to be used for purchasing his Teslas. As dutiful surf journalist, I felt it important to understand Slater’s various positions more deeply and dove feet first into the bubbling fount of his Instagram stories.
The first thing I noted, was a reference to “paper handed investors” or those blown here or there by the winds of change versus “diamond handed investors” who bravely hold a position.

Now, in a subtle signal of love to BeachGrit’s one-of-a-kind community, an “irreverent online publication,” Slater has included a diamond emoji and a hand emoji in his Instagram biography.
A clear nod to the place, and people, who adore him like no other.

FLAT BAGS ! end of session , out of the water for 2 weeks and walked , gingerly , around town , like a bandy legged cowboy much to the amusement of the entire village .I suppose in retrospect , I got lucky .

After breaking my foot and tearing all the ligaments in my ankle from a mountain biking crash in 83, attempting a floater on a big hollow wave didn’t appeal to me.
Martin Potter did 3 floaters on every wave the year he eclipsed the rest of the field winning 6 events , in ……take it away Joe ? 89

Listened to Kelly and Brad Gerlach talk about all the different kinds of floaters there are and who did the best floater ever for a half hour live yesterday. I Like Gerlach but a weird topic to talk about.

*Edit* I think one of my earliest memories of watching comps was my old man taking me to the Mattara comp here at home. Sanga won it that year maybe like 84? I was knee high I reckon.

I thought that was before your time probably. He didn’t say who was gonna do a floater at ten foot pipe but he thought it was only a matter of time haha. He said if skaters can jump down a flight of fifteen stairs then somebody could do a floater at pipe and land in the flats. Never heard so much detail about floaters in my life. Slater said he could pump down the line while on the roof a wave.

He won the juniors in the 84 Mattara Comp , I surfed against him in a 6 man heat in round 1 of that event , got through in 3rd on Saturday morning , before getting knocked out in Rnd 3 on Sunday , and got a Ronnie Coote early Monday morning ….fuck I love surf contests , before he went on to win the 85 Pro Junior v Dooma in the final in January , Bugger I almost made the main event , and then he won the world amateurs in 86

What’s the odds on the Coote coming from either the Jolly Rodger, the Star or maybe the beaches after a lovely legs comp? The 80’s must have been a rad time to be young/legal.

The funniest thing is , I still made it to work on time at 7am in Sydney a few hours later …. Makes me tired now just thinking about it .
Funnily enough I just needed a weeks rest after a recent 3 week surf holiday with the Family in France …. The surfing is no problem but recuperating takes a hell of a lot longer …..
I have a few memories of that event …. The return of Parko’s Uncle to competition and future Channel 9 big wig Dave Gyngell’s layback and nearly getting run over by a wild hairy youngish Nick Carroll in an early morning free surf as he came out of a decent tube somewhere behind the rocks at Merewether .

There are floaters and FLOATERS , from the ones on soft cotton wool foamy sections get to the next section , fun to do , but no risk involved , to death defying flying on the lip over ball crushing sections of consequence , where failure to complete will probably land you in hospital ….
