While the chargers were charging , he slipped in between the wash through sets to get his 5 counting waves and took the win .
Chicks don’t surf…..especially at pipe. The fact that they’re getting paid to pearl on take offs and not make barrels should enrage the men who are charging and pushing the limits of surfing there. You got a long way to go girls…..sorry you will never surf as good as the men and you all need to just accept that fact. Quit whining about equalty when your performance level is sub par. I watched the girls yesterday and it was hard to watch some of the girls who charged go down and lose , to those who picked the clean easy ones especially going left .
They keep blowing smoke out of Wong’s bum , but in the heats , from what I saw , she has only been super intelligent with her wave choice and taking the soft options , yes gracefully , but not critically . In there 1/4 , Isabella Nicholas charged back door , got the highest wave score in that heat by nearly 2 points and had she not been clipped coming out the doggy door on a previous wave would have beaten PIPE QUEEN WONG easily … Same went for Joanna Defay against lucky Lakey in there 1/4 final ….
Everyone bagging Tyler , but when she takes off , she looks fucking solid . Hoping she can wax Carissa if they both make the final .
I tried to watch yesterday too but got bored. Here’s my honest take on Moana. She’s great (the best maybe) at taking off and getting in the tube at pipe but when she goes to turns she exposes huge weaknesses in her surfing. It looks old school girly style. It kind of reminds me of Maya Gabeira – who undeniably charges but can’t surf small waves with any kind of good technique at all. The new crew Brisa und Molly and BettyLou etc. have left that old girly style behind them – I dig watching them surf!
Afterwards I saw Moana on the interview and was struck by how positively glowing and charming she came across so there’s that too …
I am probably coming over sounding a bit nasty to Miss Wong …. Apologies , it was not intended at her , but at the WSL selling her like she is the combination of every great pipe surfer from Butch to Barron …
One day she may be , and I really hope she does , but not yet ….. Her 5’s got replayed from 5 different angles in the 1/4 while Miss Nicholls 7+ in the same heat got one replay .
She has obviously put in the hard work out there and knows which are the right waves for her and she has been absolutely wonderfully positioned on the reef when they come through , which is such a difficult skill to acquire, and making it look easy , Lopez style …
I just want more , after the WSL have decided that she is the undisputed best female surfer out there in competition . Waiting for the 8s and 9s
There are a bunch of girls charging the nasty reefs of WA …up north and down South who are definitely taking risks in big unending tubes , who could give her a run for her money …. Bronte Macaulay and Imogen Caldwell come to mind
