“Ryan’s journey back to health is going to be a long one needing ongoing care, rehabilitation and physiotherapy”
The champion Newcastle surfer Ryan Duck, 35, is in a critical condition after being choppered to hospital and undergoing two major surgeries following his alleged stabbing a little after midnight on Monday night.
Duck, a drop-knee bodyboarder who ain’t afraid to chase overhead barrels, was allegedly attacked and stabbed around midnight while he was fishing with pals at Pacific Palms, an insanely gorgeous cluster of beaches three-and-a-half hours north of Sydney.
Police arrested a man, also 35, five clicks away at six am.
He was taken to Forster police station and charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The offence carries a penalty of up to twenty-five years in the living hell we call prisons.
The Berry Bro’s who organised the fundraiser wrote,
Ryan’s devoted partner Sophie, family and friends have been traumatised by this malicious and callus attack which nearly stole their beloved ‘Ducky’, soon father to be.
Ryan has come out the other end of this terribly horrific event but his recovery is only just beginning and he has a huge road ahead of him to get back to 100%. Ryan is going to need ongoing care, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and to be off work for several months until he can be back on his feet and regain mobility and strength.
Berry Brothers would like to do what we can to support Ryan and Sophie as they only just begin Ryan’s journey to recovery. With a mortgage over their heads, a baby on the way and on-going care for Ryan, whatever we can spare to support him and his family will go a long way to help one of Newcastle’s most beloved blokes during this time. We love you Ryan. You’ve got this, and we are all behind you.

Thanks for the well-reasoned response. I am by no means an anti-gun nut. I just want people to admit that tens of thousands of U.S. citizens die because of our incredibly lax gun laws: We have chosen to accept these deaths because people love guns in the U.S. So be it. Probably way too late to do much anyway given that most gun crimes are done with illegal guns as you point out.
I have thought about getting a gun many times but decided having the gun puts me and my family in more danger (see suicide and accidental shooting stats) than not owning one. The chance that I will need to use a gun defensively and will successfully use it defensively is miniscule. No studies show you are safer owning a gun, and most show that owning one is less safe.
What percent of those defensive uses were completely unnecessary? (Other studies peg the number at about 100,000 defensive uses, so it is somewhere between 100k and 1.6 million.) What percent of those suicides would not have occurred if the person did not own a quick and easy suicide machine? (I am guessing 50-75%.)
Yeah, guns make everything better. No one in the U.S. uses them to kill unless they are defending themselves from imminent death or great bodily harm.

When the Go Fund Me page says Duck will be off work for several months “until he can be back on his feet” I wonder if they’re being wildly ironic.

Exceptional wave riders can read waves at a different level above us mere mortals, put them on any craft with a little time and they’ll excel. Sasha Specker(ex DK world champ) was ripping harder than most of the pro surfers when I saw him on a stand up. Riding DK might look goofy most of the time but its way more difficult than riding a surfboard.
