Griffin, main shot, and his bête noire, Kanoa Igarashi, inset.

Surfing’s cruellest and most bitter rivalry revealed in breakthrough TV series, “Kanoa Igarashi and Griffin Colapinto are ostensibly friends who just want to beat each other in the water but this episode will put a bullet in that friendship!”

"In Griffin's half-cut, vitriolic desire for Kanoa to lose, you might even recognise something of yourself."

Episode Six of Make Or Break, Season 2 deals with the rivalry between Kanoa Igarashi and Griffin Colapinto.

And what a delicious little meta-narrative that is. One that has not been properly excavated in the sugary-sweet confines of the WSL, trapped behind the Wall Of Positive Noise.

Thankfully, the more honest people at Box to Box Films have done it for us.

The episode left me yearning for future match-ups between the two surfers, and in my mind that makes it a roaring success.

It reveals an intense and genuine rivalry between Kanoa and Griff, based on the fact they’ve competed against one another since their earliest days, come from rival surf towns, and share the same coach in Tom Whitaker.

It’s a little like gamboling kittens, but the bitterness of this rivalry doesn’t come across as manufactured. Griffin and Kanoa are ostensibly friends who just want to beat each other in the water, but I was left feeling this episode might put a bullet in that friendship.

I recently shared a wave or two with Kanoa. A sunset session on a building swell at a little surfed beachie in west Portugal. There were only four or five of us in the water. And when I say “shared a wave” I do mean took off on some closeouts while Kanoa boosted the sections.

I did, however, manage one smooth bottom turn to hack just in front of Mr Igarashi as he was walking up the beach in the golden dusky light. In my mind it was both stylish and highly atmospheric. I wouldn’t be so presumptuous as to speak for Kanoa, but I’m certain he felt the same.

As we changed at our cars I debated going over to introduce myself, but it’s never a good look to approach a stranger in a state of undress, and even less so when the word “BeachGrit” might well be a poisoned dart in your mouth. Little better, perhaps, than going over and saying “Hi Kanoa, we haven’t met, but I’m Jamie from the Hitler Youth.”

All this is to say, we’re oft cruel about Kanoa in this little corner of the internet, and I both do and don’t understand why.

Oh, I know he’s a bit of a poseur. The gold chains, white shirts and even whiter rap tastes don’t do it for me either.

Huntington Beach is a place I’ve never been, but hardly need to.

David Scales.

But it’s not Kanoa’s fault that his parents realised a vicarious dream through him.

Defection to Japan over the USA might be viewed as shrewd, affected, disingenuous, or any number of other things, but his Japanese heritage is undeniable. Christ, there are more than a few of you who’d claim Scottish or Irish roots purely on the strength of a McSomebodyOrOther coloniser or criminal down the line.

And then there’s his attitude and general demeanour. Yes, Kanoa is confident. Yes, Kanoa believes he has the ability to be world champion. Nay, he deserves it!

So what’s wrong with that?

The man’s a pro surfer, he knows little else. If you can’t admire his dedication to this cause then more fool you. Give me thirty-two Kanoas on Tour. Watch them eat each other like a human centipede.

Kanoa’s exuberant claims make great viewing. They’re a gift for TV producers highlighting meaningful moments in dreary heats.

Another takeaway from this episode was how dreamy Teahupo’o looks, a fact often alluded to by the WSL but rarely conveyed beyond an establishing shot of the deliciously green mountains. However, when you see it from the perspective of Griffin and Kanoa’s accommodation, homes on stilts with their own docks and boats to zip you out to a tropical reef pass, it’ll make you question many life choices.

This episode will also make you wonder how on earth Griffin Colapinto won two events and didn’t finish in the top five? I don’t think I processed this properly at the time. That’s got to be a first in pro surfing history, right?

And if none of this is convincing so far, don your best BeachGrit regalia and watch for Griffin getting on the beers at Teahupo’o after he’s knocked out to watch Kanoa vs Jadson Andre.

In his half-cut, vitriolic desire for Kanoa to lose, you might even recognise something of yourself.

Essential, as the gaffer might say.

I have been on a sports docuseries bender recently, watched the boring Tennis one on Netflix, the excellent Welcome to Wrexham, the weirdly enjoyable golf “Full Swing”, the latest disappointing series of drive to survive and all but the last episode of the latest season of Make or Break.

Make or Break is OK, I wouldn’t recommend it to a non surfer, though it is sometimes quite beautifully shot!

The Morgan/Fanning part at the aint that swell was the only highlight of the first four episodes. The latter episodes are better. Griff driving around in a golf cart complaining about how weird Kanoas celebrations are, cutting back to Kanoa saying how he and everyone from Huntington Beach hate Dan Clemente and the rich kids that live there driving around on their golf carts! Griffin is more likeable than I had previously thought, and Kanoa just as cutthroat (which I admire in a pro) and cringe inducing with his corporate behavior (if ELO was a professional surfer he would be Kanoa).

The Italo episode was good, it reminded me why I fell in love with him.

Some weird clips where Steph talks about sending it at Chopes, before cutting away from her embarrassing display at that wave!

The greatest highlight of the whole series is when goddess Johanne Defay wins at Jeffery’s bay and celebrates by being sprayed and spraying herself with champagne whilst jumping up and down! Essential!

Couple of things from the beers bit.

1) Drink your beer from the fucking bottle mate.
2) If you’re drinking beer from a glass, don’t ask your mate to pour you more beer. Do it yourself.
3) If you do drink from a glass, hold it fucking properly. Totes awkies.

Also liked how he called his mum out for getting wayyyyyyyy too involved online. Yep, we all remember that, mumma bear…

Slightly off Grif topic but Jaddy playing spoiler more than once was amazing. But that’s blurring eps. Soz for the spoiler.

Whenever I go to a restaurant that only has beer in bottles or cans the waiter will usually ask if I want a glass. I say no but in my head I am thinking fuck no, what I want is fucken keg back there. I can drink bottled beer at home for a 1/4 the price.

At 08:15 in ep 5 “Rumble in the Jungle” BG gets a visual shoutout. I was shocked and also very impressed. Also this show is Number 4 on my Apple TV chart thingy.
Also. Fuck Kanoa. Nothing about his ep made him likable, he’s a bit too serious. All the other personality traits many of us find unappealing are there and Griff by comparison seems humble.

I was there, the entire day of the Rip Curl final 5. I stood on the cobbled stone and witnessed the so called greatest and most watched surf event of all time. In a way, I feel like I was part of “make or break”. Maybe because I’m in lots of shots.
I could do a surf recap of the day, so to the point that It would even make Mike Parsons “snips” wipe that smirk right off of his face!
Here are the top 10 things I notice from the day of the Ripcurl final five.

1. Rick Howard, the writer from San Clemente newspaper pointed out Alisa spencer. “ watch for this girl, she’s gonna be doing big things.”

2. I tried to say hi to mike parsons twice, and he pretended like the sun was still in eyes.
Then I circle back and said you were great on the line up podcast. He was like oh thanks.
Snips hates Chas, fact.

3. Dibity stoyle was standing next to Lisa Anderson and I approached Lisa Anderson and asked for a selfie and Dibity thought I was talking to her… Awkward.

4. Griffin Colapinto’s father was just dressed like a lifeguard which is totally OK because he also dresses as my child’s school crossing guard.

5. Kanoa Igarashi’s lips are huge in real life.

6. It was the smallest most unattended, surf contests I have ever been to at the cobblestone… But that may be the beaches fault, lack of sand.

7. Jeff “Baldy” Baldwin was doing beach announcements. Jeff is the original Podfather of surf talk radio. Jeff, Scott Bass and Ron Mochado on San Diego Radio.

8. The crowd was 95% Brazilian. A high number of Brazilian turning out at the beach is more reflection that they like a nice beach day,

9. When Italo and Pip were in the water, I decided to ask 10 Brazilians around me who they were rooting for. 8 pip. 2 Italo.

10. The biggest fan of the entire event didn’t watch a single second of the action.
A kid waited in the sand for three hours for Jack Robinson signature. It was sad and epic. He sat in the sand in front of the competitors area with a jack jersey on, never looking up to watch the surfing. The security guards felt so sorry for the kid. Jack Robinson finally showed up and delivered the goods.

10 1/2
Last, but not least…..ELO ended the event, on stage by declaring with Stephanie’s eighth world title. “Now we call herStephanie the great and….we now spell that “great” with an eight.
That dad joke fell on deaf ears.
He double down…. And repeated himself.
“Great! With an 8”

Yeah…. We heard you.

And…. you’re embarrassing us dad.

Agreed. Kanoa’s actually a pretty nice guy and a pleasure to share the lineup with.
Griffin is a bit of a dick but relaxes when he’s called out.
Italo is a true cunt in the water…and that’s why he ended up getting bitch slapped a year or two ago at Coxos.

I’m yet to watch a single episode of any series, but word around the water cooler from both surfing and non surfing audiences alike is that this series lacks the incision and pizzaz of series 1. Even down to basic issues of inaccuracy and inconsistency in editing etc.

This one sounds orrite but

So many smash cuts to out of context surfing identities saying something “oh he/she fell”, “oh look at that” , “no way” cut with reality tv “dun dun” dramatic noises.
Taking those out of the convo – it’s worth watching and the Griff/Kanoa ep is pretty sweet. Also Italo hold Jackie personally responsible for shit judges.

Biggest problem with Make or Break is that they keep trying to pass the Cut-Throat vibe or whatever and it just doesn’t work. These people either all have boring personalities or choose not to show their true colours.
Compared to Drive to Survive the whole thing feels more like a The Office kind of production. But instead of the genius that is Ricky Gervais we get fucking Elo as an executive producer…basically a lot of cringe without the hilariousness

W/ you JP. Haven’t gotten through all 8 yet, but did see this one with the Kanoa/griff rivalry and the earlier ones. Better than shit, even if ELO is an EP (which would be a good side story — does ELO have an individual stake in this series or is his EP title just a ceremonial nod to his CEO of WSL status and maybe some editorial input somewhere?). Also maybe you can share your tips for stylish and atmospheric turns with Com Turren and save him from more MADness.
