Ubiquitous cellular cameras that double as telephones are everywhere, capturing “bad behavior.” Hordes of adult learners, who took up our pastime of kings during Covid, are just as happy to sue for damages as they are to drop in willy nilly. Maintaining lineup order, thus, a virtually extinct part time job.
Yes, it’s a different world but not long ago, death threats and mob-like warnings that “all fingers would be broken” were part of the norm. Enter Logan Murray. The famed New Zealand surf photographer responsible for putting Kiwian waves on the map has sat down with the team at 1 news and is sharing all, including being a wanted man and having to live like a sniper in order to snap the ocean.

It used to be photogs sneaking around the dunes exposing spots around here (before they were mainstream knowledge), holtzman,Anders, Hughes, then moon now jovic (jack mc coy did the most damage by far) the list goes on, none of them could surf very well so taking photos of sponnos was their way of getting the ok and hanging with the cool crew , those spots long blown out, now its the instagram gen and their 5 minutes of fame, way worse, instant crowd makers
Have to agree on the Insta generation. Little do they know they are fucking themselves over in the process as well as us grumpy old c*nts

Surf photogs are the worst. Show any visiting pros all of the local spots and then the van lifers follow.
I have always wondered that if i travelled alone to a surf region sans camera/insta account etc and asked the resident pros/photogs where some unknown waves were, would they tell me? They’d probably tell me to get fucked.
But they are way too eager to let travelling pros, with their photogs, know where all the unknown waves are so they can blast all over the internet.
Booby traps could be the only option left to keep the locals safe? Catch the sniper photogs, Val’s with cell phones, and all that are not in the know. If you don’t live here don’t surf here.
But not other places cuz I enjoy surf trips and I don’t usually get trip insurance so I can’t afford to get caught in a snare or bear trap.
So I better not see any of you at my local, or watch out.

i thought it was a cool piece, although he never named spots and actively tried to hide locations, i understand people getting pissed when they see their spot turn up in Surfer mag.
the flip side though is that a few spots got an airing in Endless Summer, so it was always known there were waves here.
as he said though, there are still secret spots here, plenty of them.
I have photographed places over the years on the absolute pump, and NEVER seen anyone in the water. some are almost in plain sight, others, tucked away with farm access.
