The confluence of surfing and influencing has been one of the most delectable bits of our modern epoch. Surfing, itself, is generally pointless. Feed a river of half-baked narcissists with even less value right into it et voila… a bouillabaisse of embarrassment so delicious as to require a Michelin Star.
And let us meet Jade who decided, at 19, she wanted to surf Pipeline.
Jade’s inspirational video journal opens with a call to her surf coach in which she asks, “Say a beginner, and that beginner is me, wanted to surf Pipeline?” It is unclear why she has a “surf coach” at all but he answers that she would have to train very hard, discussing how deadly the wave is etc.
Maybe ignoring his advice, she leaves her father then travels to Oahu’s iconic North Shore in order to do vlogger things, discusses her “training,” which included surfskate, then finally she was ready. Jade paddled out on a Rob Machado model surfboard, “body fully shaking” and eventually rolls into a 2ft burger, achieving the dream, as it were.
A few rude apples pointed out that she did not surf Pipe but, rather Gums, and offseason with no swell, though the general flood was filled with praise and awe.
Son of the sun declared, “Thank you for showing the mental struggles of your Pipeline journey. I feel like the frustration with setbacks is oftentimes just ignored on social media, and seeing you go through all of that is soooo inspiring!!!”
Annie McCoy added, “I don’t know you but when I saw you surfing pipeline, I was beaming from ear to ear. That was awesome! Good job Jade!!!!”
Roam with Reda shared, “Recently surfed Pipe for the first time maybe ~6foot faces was terrified just being out there lol but had a blast once I got over the fear.”
R. Goodrich simply said, “You’re gnarly for surfing pipeline!! Keep up the good work and can’t wait to see if you get sponsored eventually.”
On and on and on it went which brings us back around to Filipe Toledo. Will Jade surf Teahupo’o with no experience next?

Haha I had to laugh so hard. Another chick wanting to be famous on social media. It’s soo sad she had it in her head that’s she’s surfing pipeline whilst this is nothing more than just a beginner wave… had nothing to do with what pipeline stands for. Barrels.. sure it nice that she does it and happy for her that she is happy but I don’t understand why all these girls want to be famous and take it seriously like it’s a real achievement…. as if we now should have so much respect. This is just asking for attention. Sad…
Ok boomer! Social media is a source of income just like blogs and websites used to be ! If you even watched half of the instead of relying on this inaccurate article you would know she trained for 4 years. And apparently she was “famous” or at least followed enough for those 4 years from whatever/wherever she was posting!

They’ll be filling up beaches, pumping up coastal prices, taking up space generally. Doesn’t look like you need the youtube money anyway so maybe chill and take up golfing or mountain biking instead. Those seem rad as well.

I kind of liked her video. She was genuinely trying to progress. She put in effort and did progress. How many Vals do that? Didn’t Slater surf gums that one year he was in a four man final with AI, going for a World Title? That year Kelly popped in at the Billabong house unannounced and tried to weird everyone out?
Jade’s swing at getting some views seem’s more reasonable than Slater’s viral surfing baby competition he’s trying to spark up against John John and Darwin.
Why compare her to slaters world title battle at pipe against AI?
her journey would’ve been all good if she didn’t document it for views, I would have no issue with it if it wasn’t all about clicks. If she just tried to progress at surfing and surfed 3ft fat pipe without broadcasting this minor achievement to the world, also it was misleading, everyone knows that wasn’t pipe.
Don’t pretend to do something that you’re not. That’s false and vain. Just advertise it like; ‘I’m a learner surfer, I got surf coaching and surfed head high fat off season pipe, it’s a dangerous wave when there’s swell but I surfed it when it was very safe and with small swell, but still an achievement.’ Not video worthy however.
Comparing her to Slater was just for fun. Figured it might bother people but it made me laugh.
It’s been a while since I watched that video, but I think she did make a point to say it wasn’t legit heavy Pipe. You have a good points about broadcasting this stuff being vain. True. That constantly in your face (or on your screen) distorted vanity seems like a common characteristic of the world we live in now.
I’d go as far to say that social media and influencers have pushed that vain click bait distortion of everything so far that they’ve rendered all personal narrative meaningless. Which oddly, I find very refreshing on a personal level. Because personal narrative has become so tainted by all this BS, I find myself with less desire to share my own, which has a lot of benefits. In this day and age keeping meaningful experiences to oneself is like throwing less plastic in the ocean. You’re not turning your own meaning and value into plastic, and you’re keeping a valuable space clean. Win Win.
