Sorry to rain on your wife’s bro parade but to me this is just a commented vlog. No real pull here. Dozens of ‘TROPICAL BARRELS STRIKE MISSION’ videos out there, this seemed just yet another one, with commenters on hand.
On the plus side, location is spot on – wild , wooly, off the beaten track etc. Tropical slabs always make for good viewing, crazy drone angles and all. Good crew. Harry Bryant bodysurfing. Seemed really difficult to navigate that lineup.
I was watching bits of the Nazaré event yesterday and it was very much engaging, more than this – it was live, the massive slams and subsequent rescues were thrilling, massive speed turns, solid commentary on the desk, and the whole thing was really well put together. Maybe it was just my low expectations and trying to dodge work.
Get the feeling that the surf is about a 4/10 at this wave and as good as these surfers are, they’d be hog tied and raped by the WSL top 10.
But that and a live feed are the only things missing.

Pretty much like any decent spot on any given day.
Good surfers, good waves, no fuckwits in the booth and no bent crooked judges. Not rocket science.

Nice to watch but does make me think the WSL has all the ingredients and potential to make watching just as good. Good Snapper at 6 ft and behind the rock, Pipe, J-Bay etc. – all excellent waves. Then put their world’s best surfers on them in overlapping heats and it’s just as good to watch as this. The only thing the WSL really has to change is the bullitshitting in the commentary – that really pulls them down. If the WSL put contests on in good conditions and commentated honestly for knowledgable surfers they’d be killing it on a dreamtour 2.0.

EPIC timing. Wozza have a tub comp in the mid east and NS hold a groundbreaking surf trip session based approach to a comp.

Entertaining wave. Hard to see the WSL being able to run there. The non scoring thing though? I personally enjoy wave scoring. Guessing wave scores and seeing how they line up with judges is part of the fun. Getting mad about scores that seem off is part of the entertainment. Getting mad that someone you like got “ripped off” only bonds you more to that surfer. Over looking questionable results when the surfer you’re rooting for wins is part of the fun too.
Interesting how, even with the changes this is still a surf contest. It’s still subject to the same elements like wind shifting to the wrong direction etc. No amount of hype or hours logged on a podcast can create “ideal conditions” when the day finally arrives (though I don’t care about ideal conditions so much). No amount of experimenting with formats, scoring, etc can’t save surf contests from being essentially surf contests. Though it can definitely add to the overall landscape. As far as viewership I can’t help but think bringing bikini contests back under the surf contest umbrella might boost viewership in some non endemic demographics. Were bikini contests what really brought the crowds “back in the day”? Is that 70 percent of why I bought surf mags as a kid? A big reason why surfing clearly was so cool? The vloggers seem to have refigured out the power of bikini’s with their click bait thumbnails.
Watching live creates a different tension and excitement when you’re posted up watching (so having that option might be nice). Though the stripped down edited format has benefits too. Hasn’t the WSL done both at times?
Maybe I didn’t catch it, but knowing the stakes adds to the entertainment. If a 100k is on the line for the win (just a guess, it wasn’t), it gives kids something to dream about and adults a sense that the competition side of surfing has monetary value (even if it’s just a façade). What would golf viewership do if a tournament win was only rewarded with a trophy? Would people really watch? Big money legitimizes everything.
The non-scoring is definitely something to consider. As far as components that make an interesting surf event go, the “alienated brazzo” is fundamental.

Still needs work, I think they needed a more contemporary announcing crew, the wave though crazy was far from a perfect landscape.
