Walking distance from hip clubs, trendy restaurants, iconic music venues. Everything that Los Angeles is most famous for. Those film and television programs live up in those Santa Monica mountains and for one, two or three glorious nights you are their neighbor.

Every surfer spends a night in Los Angeles at one point or another. Whether it’s on layover from the United States’ east coast heading to Tahiti or on layover from Australia’s east coast heading to Surf Ranch.

Whether for family vacation or for SCELCapalooza and the best place to stay for the traveling surfer is The Standard in West Hollywood.

Oh does this seem counter-intuitive?

West Hollywood is not on the beach but tucked at the foot of the famous Santa Monica mountains. It has no wave out front nor does it offer surfboard valet but it does have Croft Alley, the perfectly quaint 24-hour downstairs diner that serves soft-shell crab bánh mì and sightings of Paris Hilton. It is an old-school style environment with Formica tables, a long bar and

I never saw Paris Hilton there but I did once share a 3:00 am booth with her sister Nicky. She was eating a salad. I was eating eggs over medium, toast, home fries and sausage.

It also has one of the better pool decks in the entire world with booming views of greater Hollywood. The white lounge chairs and colorful beanbags are always filled with interesting and beautiful people. The sort you want to meet and the sort you want to be. And drinks brought on trays by the stars of tomorrow.

It also has rooms with even better booming views of greater Hollywood, sliding glass doors with blue wrought iron railings, gorgeously classic feng shui, televisions that broadcast film and television programing  of the interesting and beautiful people sitting by the pool and reality shows of those eating at Croft Alley.

It is the sort of space you’d create at home if you were effortlessly plugged in. Comfortable beds, fantastic mini-bar and doors that honestly slide right open, allowing the jasmine scent to waft in and out unimpeded.

It also has service that has become the standard, if you’ll forgive the word play. The hosts and hostesses, front desk managers and room service waiters are all cooly detached yet impossibly helpful. They know where you should go. They know what you need. They’ll get it all for you with the subtlest wink.

And it is also in West Hollywood, on Sunset boulevard. Walking distance from hip clubs, trendy restaurants, iconic music venues. Everything that Los Angeles is most famous for. Those film and television programs live up in those Santa Monica mountains and for one, two or three glorious nights you are their neighbor.

The Standard in West Hollywood is the best surf hotel that LA has to offer. The best surf hotel in the world that is 20 miles from the beach.
