Dirk Ziff, the man who owns the WSL, used to also own a shale concession in Australia that had potential to do mass damage to the Great Barrier Reef. We discussed this hot news last week, pointing to a wonderfully written story by Craig Braithwaite in The FreeRide Voice. I quietly wondered, whilst sipping a Stolichnaya and Reed’s Extra Ginger Brew, if Mr. Ziff was, in fact, an ecological terrorist.
But how rude! How yellow!
Did the Stolichnaya perhaps steal my sense because guess what? Dirk Ziff sold his stake in that ugly business in August, quietly doing the Lord’s work and not destroying our earth. BeachGrit even received exclusive information from a powerful industry insider (maybe the most powerful!) claiming that Mr. Ziff sold his stake with “zero gain to himself.”
Those oil and gas holdings were valued at 1.2 billion United States dollars. Could it be possible, might it be probable, that Dirk Ziff is, in fact, a saint?

twice asked for permission to cut rock out of a little-known preserve,
the Walter G. Merritt County Park, a two-mile-long rectangle at the
southern end of the Taconic Ridge where Putnam and Dutchess Counties
meet Connecticut. The Ziffs offered $15,000 at one point, but Putnam
officials declined.
But while those talks were under way, and then again
in 2000 after the county’s second refusal, heavy machinery was spotted
at work on the park’s western edge. A little detective work revealed the
machines had been there for months: Putnam officials traipsed through
their woods and found roads cut, boulders sliced apart or removed, trees
and shrubs missing.

Sold his holdings for zero gain to himself other than the 1.2 Billion USD he sold the fucking holdings for. God damn I hate the way rich people account for things. I didn’t make any capital gains so that means my 1.2 Billion in cash means nothing.

nah, new money’s not really money. But I don’t expect your inheritance is really a lot of money anyway.
That’s fine that you have expectations of what my inheritance will be; most likely your expectation/jealousy is fueled by some sort of weird rich person fear that I might end up having more money than you, not that it matters at all. I know for a fact that my inheritance will be enough to never work again, to travel endlessly in business class (or above) and spend all my time surfing and exploring and to make it possible for me to live the life I choose, work if I choose, and most importantly surf empty waves whenever I can.
Anyway, like I said above, only a superrich person would act like 1.2 billion net didn’t count as anything just because of the lack of capital gains. I doubt that either of us are, or ever will be, part of the superrich cliques that control of almost any form of government in Western Europe, North America or the truly democratic parts of Central and South America like Costa Rica, Argentina (mostly), Peru, Ecuador, Colombia (again for the most par) etc etc.
The fact is that someone who is a hundred millionaire probably has more in common with a normal millionaire than they would with one of the ultrarich like a Buffet or Gates… And thats what I will be, just a normal veteran with a super sweet combat system.

Bloomberg articles says Ziff Bros “seeking” to sell oil and gas holdings. Were they in fact sold? If so, they FreeRideVoice kind of punked us with that story last week!
Our insider says yes! And multiple articles pointed to impending sale. I just like Bloomberg. Who doesn’t?
Wouldn’t the sale have been reported? My own half-hour of due diligence after reading FreeRideVoice piece made it seem like Ziff bros still owned the Q-land refinery.
