Surf-wise, y’can’t really swing past Indonesia. It squats right over the equator there so you don’t get hit by wind like you do in the Pacific or Indian (or Atlantic) and those south swells are as reliable as the morning call to prayer in this corner of the caliphate.

There’s 2873 square metres of beachfront freehold land for sale to private buyers (i.e. not anyone wanting to start a surf camp) on Palau Simeulue in North Sumatra (Aceh).

And once you’ve tossed over your 200k (which you can make over five easy payments during the construction of the bungalows) all you’ve gotta cough up is $534 a month for maintenance and whatever airfare it is to visit your kingdom every six or so months.
Would be better buy something in Nicaragua. It´s closer, great waves in everywhere and foreigners can buy land legally. And it´s not over crowded like Costa Rica (yet).
And plus! If you get to a surf in Colorado or Popoyo and say you´re a James B friend, the locals you´ll let you surf a lot more waves. I´m almost a local there.
Cue localism as soon as you own a spot on the beach in front of this wave.

I was supposed to be going to that resort next month… but I decided to have a “saving money year” with no plane flights instead… Seeing that on screen is probably the lamest thing I have ever typed or said.
That saving money year is something I can really look back on and remember fondly when I’m 90…
Hey Negs, I just got home from Simeulue, and I was staying next door to Aura. The guys who run it are in the local admin’s bad books for various reasons. I certainly wouldn’t be investing a cent with them at the moment.

Sort of. Out front, which is break in the pic, was never at its best during the couple of weeks I was there. But it had been the week before apparently. It’s very consistent size-wise – never under shoulder height and it got up to double overhead sets on a couple of days. However the swell angle wasn’t quite right. Scored some epic waves on the islands off the coast though. Simeulue is definitely worth a trip. No tourists at all – just the surfers at the camps. Mahi-mahi resort is kiwi run, which was a bonus. NZ$3K buys you nine nights all inclusive of flights from NZ, and everything else except boat trips out to the little islands, which are only $10 per person. chur

there used to more waves before earthquake. a shame. off south end there is … go far far north of simeulue there is … go look … still there. no mod cons though. basics. there’s more than the area of surf camps and the little islands near them. local homestays available. give money to local crew. wayyyy cheaper. flights in and out a pain. charge extra seat for boards. super exe. take ferry from meulaboh. surf the right near army barracks and hollow beachbreak before ferry leaves. take the time. save $.
Boards cost about $45nz – on Susi Air you can only take two, with a max bag weight of 20kg – which is plenty. The ferry takes 14 hours from Sumatra. I guess it all depends on how much time you have for your trip. I heard that up north some locals still speak their own dialects – real frontier stuff. xxx to you too, by the way. Call me a killjoy, but anyone who “buys” land in Indonesia has to be nuts. It’s impossible for a non-citizen to actually own land, and that $534 a month maintenance adds up to $6.5k a year – enough coin will get you three weeks in the Ments and another three straining cocktails through your beard at Canggu. If that’s your thing.
