Get a load of this! I read a story in the early morning in The Los Angeles Times about an older very kind man who lived in a van with his father in Florida. His father got sick and he cared for him and then his father died and he was very sad. He decided, though, to punch through his sadness and achieve a lifelong dream of surfing in Huntington Beach.
So he drove his van where his father died all the way from Florida to Huntington, paddled out, slammed into a pier pylon and died. No one knows if he actually caught a wave or not. There is a gofundme to get his body back to Florida so he can be buried next to his father.
The levels of depression here have rarely been reached. And yet The Inertia puked it straight up under the headline
FLORIDA MAN DIES WHILE FULFILLING DREAM OF SURFING IN HB
Which makes me wonder. Does the definitive voice of surfing™ hate you and hope your life is shrouded in despair? Does it want you to feel that life has no happy ending? Ever?
So depressive! Screw you The Inertia! Screw you forever!

You can’t fault young Weisberg. He knows not what he does. I saw him at Rincon yesterday and had to turn my head in shame as he stroked into a wave, ten feet behind the section, struggled to his feet and fell on the bottom turn. Probably for the best, maybe he was saved realizing how poor his wave choice had been. I wonder, how does someone so young, that has spent their entire youth and professional life obsessed with a specific activity and all of the noise that exists on its periphery, remain so incredibly lost when it comes to the activity itself? It must be a gift. Eternal youth. Always seeing the world through the eyes of a young calf freshly squeezed from its mother’s bovine rear; dripping in slime and still inside the placenta, eagerly awaiting its first sweet suckle of the utter. He has the same gift for editorial.
I dunno Chas, I thought it was kinda awesome. Maybe you should rethink your relationship with death.
Chas, while I applaud your life project of ridiculing The Inertia at every opportunity presented to you by their journalistic foibles, I think you should have walked away from this one. While your avenue of approach requires the posting of an article by the Inertia that sets the stage for your rant, your use of an article about a man’s untimely death seems callous.
If Beachgrit would only publish a list of BG approved websites, life would be so much better.
I can vouch that he showed up alone at the beginning of that last run of swell and was surfing the pier. He has an unmistakeable look and I thought he was no more than just another guru passing through. I heard that someone got pulled out around dark come to find out it was the stranger. Upon reading the tale of his purpose I felt a bit of sorrow for the gentleman, so yes he did accomplish his goal and I say may he rest in peace.
The problem to the answer is always The Inertia.
The answer to the problem is to never visit it. Expecially when you’re thinking it’ll good for a laugh
