Joey T is the most agreeable man in the world!
I’m an awful public speaker. Words are fumbled, my vocabulary drops from a fifth to a third grade level and my hands tremble like a typical day in Haiti.
Then we’ve got Joe Turpel. The man with honey in his chords and a lifetime of stats in his noggin. A loveable know-it-all who offers digestible prose to the layman. The yin to Potter’s yang.
In this episode of the Occ-Cast, Joey T joins the ’99 world champ in a reunion of sorts. Y’see before it was Joe and Pottz in the booth, Joe and Occ were the ones dueling mics, and their chemistry continues to sizzle. From this interaction it could be inferred that Turpel would prefer the fun-loving and unpredictable approach of Occy to the bullish and hard-nosed Potter.
This program covers a myriad of Turpel-related topics, from his origins in professional commentating (2007, women’s ASP), the most memorable call of his career as a commentator (somehow NOT the Mick shark encounter), and his infatuation with music (punk-turned acoustic, but even he gets stage fright!).
So, do you like Joey T? His voice is a little high and he’s the commentary equivalent of The Inertia but, is he also not lovable in his own little way? Every great analyst team has softball character to smooth over any internal squabbles, and Joe fills that role with gusto.
Think about this: have you ever heard Turpel argue with anyone? No! He continually bites the bullet for the sake of our viewing pleasure. That’s gotta be worth something.
While we’re on the topic, who should replace Ross? Is it Barton Lynch? And what do we think of the weirdly aggressive Kaipo, besides the fact that he’s weirdly aggressive?
Enjoy the Occ-Cast!
Where is Turpel? Has he been on the webcast or tweeted since April?
and nobody knows… a real mystery..a good case for inertia
.
They should just hire Bobby Martinez and make him wear a fucking tennis headband!
It was a mercy fuck so he’d stop talking and start moaning but they had to call 911 because even his moaning caused Madonna to seizure… obviously they blamed it on drugs.
… with Turds you mean?
best drinking game, skull every time Pottz says “WOW”! https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
joe – “stryker” – turpel https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Kaipo’s post final interview with Owen was a little hard to watch. He went Nigel Tufnel on us and turned it straight up to eleven.
Please post video of it here.

someone should suggest occy to let the people talk on the podcast..i find pretty annoying how he is always talking.
i don’t think wsl should hire anyone to talk in the both, they should let someone eternal talk freely in there.
He got his tips from Rory
In terms of competitive surfing, the invention of the mute button is somewhere between the invention of the thruster and man-on-man heats.
Reminds me of how famous actors start bands…
WSL really need to consider making a change. Four months since the last comp at Pipe and Potter & Turpel were simply unbearable from the outset at Snapper. I work & watch the comp and I actually turned it off many times due to the unbearable (repetitive rhetorical) commentary of Potter, Turpel & Mel. The same old stories in every comp. As was suggested, bring some coaches or even surfers into the booth. Blakey is OK & they lost their other best in Ross. Strider is OK because he is forced to speak about what is happening in the present moment (rather than recollect the same old stories from the past).
You work the comp?
“Have you ever heard Turpel argue with anyone?” And herein lies the problem. Give us spice not vanilla!
… steak not beef?
Sausage
milk steak with a side of jellybeans pls
42 mins you are fucking kidding!!! What the fuck they gonna rant on about my ears would bleed
Fortunately my ears went blind when I heard Occy talking as a youngster.
My eyes, on the other hand, were never so entertained as the time he tripped on the gutter outside the Old Burleigh Theatre Arcade apre-surf one fine summers morn. The glare he gave the gutter was fucking ace.
Ha! Was that in his coke days? I can imagine the set jaw and look he gave!!!
Occy’s a bloody legend
Epitomy of Anti-Non-Australian
Nah, I’m older than that even. He was a hot rat being driven around by G. Merchant on a trip to Tallows. The carpark was located back from the beach, meaning patrons had to walk a coupla hundred metres to the corner where the waves were. Occy made the impressive observation, upon noticing the gated emergency access road; “If that gate wasn’t there, we could drive even closer”.
For full effect you have to take into account the untouched by world travel naïveté of the youthful Occy and while his voice has matured now, back then it was a nasal strine that grated like discordant teenage whales.
How about the WSL starts hiring some of the coaches to alternate in the booth? Ya know, some guys who can actually analyze a wave and provide insightful feedback. Heck, maybe just more than one guy that can even properly name some maneuvers.
= they can’t.
