Last week, you might’ve tuned into the story of a father-and-son being gang-banged at Tamarin Bay in Mauritius.

We all know about the White Shorts in Mauritius, and there is so much terrible examples of their uncivilised behavior all over the internet. Kyle Kahn, a Cape Town surfer now living in Mauritius, saw his 13-year-old son get a smack from the crew and went in to intervene.

Now, there emerges a conflicting version of the event from a twelve-year-old South African surfer, “Rick”, also living in Mauritius.
“What I saw on that day was a South African surfer approach a local and he accused him of slapping his son. I never saw him slap his son and he threw the first punch at the local and then they started fighting,” says Rick. “If the locals were beating up kids I wouldn’t be surfing here and I would know about it and they haven’t beaten up anyone…well… I haven’t seen them beat up any kids… They’ll never punch children.”

From what you presume to be Kyle Kahn: “Rick and my son surf together. It’s a great vibe and I’m always happy when there are other young kids in the line-up. R says he didn’t see my son being slapped, this neither confirms or denies what happened. The aerial footage shows who was close to me when I was assaulted by the Old WhiteShorts guy. OWSG showed no evidence of being punched, only a cut toe from when he kicked me in the jaw and mouth while I was under the water. I think R will get a lot more waves now and hopefully physical attacks will end. THIS IS PRECISELY why I put my video out there. The locals are now being friendlier. A CHANGE HAS BEGUN! (Note not all locals are aggressive and violent.)”
And then, as if to unravel the clumsy piece of propaganda,
“Stop with all your crap you liar…we better not see you in the water again! A good beating now will be justified!! Thanks to the boy who gave a testimony of the real story…”
Tamarin Bay is a pretty, and not especially difficult or heavy, lefthander that was described by Surfer magazine in 1973 as “Probably the most perfect wave in the world.”

Thought I’d share a random Mauritius story. It starts in the Algerian stretch of the Sahara, back in the mid-70s. We’re heading south and scouring the horizon for signs of dust coming towards us to guide us along a wasteland of criss-crossed tracks, often getting on the roof and riding w a pair of binos. I spot a cloud of dust and we head toward it and i notice that on top of the 4x coming towards us a board. I had just come from surfing the right points of Morrocco, and had a board on our roof. Of course, we stopped and traded info, first about roads and directions, and then quickly, surf. The guy told me about this island, in the Indian Ocean, perfect lefts, idyllic, no crowds. Magical. Mauritus. some six months later, after going trans-Africa, freighter to Madagascar, deck passage to Mauritius, I arrived there, knowing only the name of the Bay the guy in the desert told me to to go. Tamarin. Spent a month there, $4 for the hut i rented for the whole time. Lucked into a bunch of swells, some nice south africans, and waves of great fun and speed over a shallow reef, which took it’s toll. A small localism vibe was brewing at the time, but very meek. Things change. But ahh, from a chance encounter in the Sahara….

During dinner the wind switched after a front stormed on our heads all day! Walking across the beach seeing groomed summer south swell hitting sandbars up down the beach. Then! Women running, screaming two kids drowning up the beach. Full sprint solid block and a half getting closer to the panicking crowd , scanning shore break and 50 yards out I see surfer with a boy on his board swimming him to shore. Looking hard now for the second kid. No sign nothing. “Find the parent.. Find the parent..Fuck!” in the Crowd “Is their another child in the water?” She says “No”
The crowd getting boy to the beach now. He is ok scared as hell though. In the end four surfers who responded to this kid”s need. Well over a dozen adults on the beach afraid to go past shore break. Storm had chased the life guards to punch out early. I walked back to my board thinking proud to be a “Surfer!”

I am in Mauritius atm. The french Mauritian locals here are cunts. My mate and i were surfing a wave, just us 2 out, when a local paddled straight up to us, death stared us and in an aggressive tone told us to go in because him and 6 other locals were paddling out and wanted to surf. We were polite and resprectful and started paddling in. Then another cunt shouted at us telling us that we are not allowed to surf on wknds.
This is not an isolated incident, the other day an 18 year old and his 12 year old sister were chased in by a bunch of locals. They were slashing water and shouting at them to go in. One even hit the 18year olds board.
Mauritius is fucked! Dont even waste your time or money coming to this shit hole. The waves arent even that good and the locals are kooks!
