The Washington Post weighs in on the Surf Ranch Pro!
You know The Washington Post as the publication that felled Richard M. Nixon and is trying to do the same to Donald H. Trump or whatever his middle name is. It is historic, proud, incredibly important with more awards than any other publication on earth.
So of course the editorial staff would want Matt Warshaw to weigh in on the meaning of the Surf Ranch Pro.
Of course.
Who would you call?
I called Matt the very second the plow whirred to life because who would I call?
Matt Warshaw is the answer in case you can’t tell that I’m vodka drunk at 1:24 pm and not even at Surf Ranch yet (tomorrow) where I won’t be drunk at all thanks to Michelob Ultra GOLD brewed with Organic Grains because I don’t think it has alcohol but if it does not a lot.
So anyhow, politicians and etc. the United States over will read Warshaw’s account of the Surf Ranch Pro and that will be gospel for them. What was his account?
LEMOORE, Calif. — The wave shouldn’t be here, surrounded by boundless fields of nuts, vegetables and cotton. It’s an exotic crest of water six feet high, one that would be at home in Bali or the east coast of Australia. But not here, well over 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean.
The idea of belonging, of context, has always been central to those who ride the best waves. Surfing was born centuries ago in the South Pacific and Hawaiian islands, where it is called he’e nalu, then rebranded starting in the early 1900s in California. From the Golden State it spread to the rest of the world, surfers always beholden to the finicky variables of their passion — tide and wind, swell and direction — and enamored of its offbeat culture. For some, it remains less a sport than a lifestyle.
So to find a wave like the one that surfaces in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley, which is to say a nearly perfect curl, is bizarre. And very tantalizing.
This is what has drawn 54 of the planet’s best surfers, who are competing in a vast concrete pool that is intended to introduce the sport to a new audience ahead of its Olympic debut in 2020. Only once before has an international event been held nowhere near open water — the first contest, several decades ago, was a disaster — and the $30 million artificial-wave complex constructed in the small farming town of Lemoore has elicited awe within the surfing community.
“It’s a beautiful wave to surf, it’s surreal,” said a beaming Courtney Conlogue, who last year was ranked fourth in the world. “I love what it’s going to bring to the sport.”
Yet Surf Ranch has also divided the community. Surfing historian Matt Warshaw sees wave pools as direct assaults on the very nature of the sport, from the unpredictability of its ocean setting and the nuanced forces that must be understood to the experience and skills accumulated over a lifetime.
“Now it’s more like a skatepark. You’ve thrown away the part that makes surfing the most compelling,” said Warshaw, whose “Encyclopedia of Surfing” and “History of Surfing” are considered definitive texts. “Something really fundamental is changing.”
It goes on and on and on so you can read the rest here. Democracy dies in darkness, bitches.
‘Now it’s more like a skatepark’ It’s not, and if you wanna compare this to skateboarding there will be only one simple outcome; Skateoarding wins easily.. The skill level on display here is woeful – embarrassing that this is all the ‘world’s best surfers’ can produce.
Wait a second. No comment on the pic? Is that real or am I just revealing my dumbness? Olly pull out? Is it going back in?
ah yes one of the rare joys of the NW summertime, pissing in your breezy little 4/3
Warshaw enters the humiliation & ridicule of trying to uphold a rigid & flawed opinion. Today’s action was a success, when the big boys like Gabriel Medina cut loose. Owen was his old self; showing what an amazing surfer he is. The future of pools was quite clear today when those surfers like Gabriel, Julian, Jordy and Felipe ignored the silly little tube and used it as a ramp. Italo looked a lesser power on the lefts. Kolohe looked very sharp. Surfing is also a sport; dependent on athleticism. The pool tube needs to be shortened or broken up but today provided the validity of wave pools in the Olympics & competition. Basically, only one the very best surfers will win. It can’t be denied the pool showcases degrees of skill. While pools won’t replace Pipe, Chopes or Snapper behind the rock, they have a place because they are not much different to Trestles or small Snapper.
Gotta say Nick I’m with you here. There was a lot of sameness, and yet I don’t thing I’ve ever seen pro surfers more exposed for who they essentially are and what their surfing essentially is. Medina was a precise super-athlete, Jordy had the stubborn will to dance his own steps, Owen the loose wild man always pulled down the line by the taut string of his momentum. The slow looked slow, the sloppy looked sloppy. The wave exposed and punished every little kink the game. Kelly’s wave cuts through all pretense and presents its riders naked to the world. You wrote “basically, only one the very best surfers will win. It can’t be denied the pool showcases degrees of skill,” and goddamn ain’t that the fucking truth.
I clicked on the article despite feeling assured that there were no other morsels left untouched by Chas. I was wrong. Still haven’t read the entire article. That’s because my mind stumbled, then careened into the wall with the statement that “[t]he technology has approximately 50 settings to provide variation in the waves’ height, shape, angle, power and speed,…”. FIFTY FUCKING SETTINGS!?!?! 50 different settings. Am I too many Michelob Ultra Pure Gold’s deep in organicly grained intoxication to not remember this being said somewhere before, somewhere else? That’s a lot of fucking settings! Why are we only being shown one? Or are we?
Well, a magic seahorse told me they have figured out fifty different configurations of water depth, plow speed, angle of attack and thirteen other secret non-GMO spices to create imperceptibly incremental variations of the exact same wake. However, each setting change requires 72 hours of shut down and half a million in series C funding to accomplish – so unfortunately we only get to see the one right now.
Ha! Time to throw a rooster over the wall! Next week facebook is renting the joint. Make him feel right at home!
It’s the sameness of the wave that is the problem. It’s boring and at the very least ignores surfing’s very distinctions. However, it’s guaranteed swell is it’s savior. Some technology to alter the bottom on the fly and push water from different directions would be cool and help with the variety factor. Make the pool bigger, and offer multiple spots. The bigly is artificial 8 foot plus, round, and well we have a confirmed revolution. Maybe a soft memory foam bottom for those neck breakers.
Maybe they could schedule the comp at Trestles and if the swell dies in the ass they could travel to Kelly’s tub
Seriously!
I’m disappointed that it’s not nearly as shit as I had hoped, it’s on in the background, and I’m kinda enjoying it!
Lol that spine at rags bowl is good though… except for the skeeters
Jordy riding a Sci-Fi?
Yep.
why are they in country colours? so dumb.
Because they aren’t surfing against each other one on one so it doesn’t matter.
Food without flavour
Entertainment sans talent
Surf without nature
Dunno Edward, I think these peeps are talented. But the sterility of the canvas leaves me cold.
Whistling tunes we
hid in the dunes by the sea-
side, It’s a knockout
Ah the Washington Post, one of our greatest purveyors of fake news here in the States and that’s saying something as competition is fierce. Warshaw lessens himself lending his byline to them. Oh well, we all gotta eat.
How is it ‘fake news’?
Isn’t it a rather respectable newspaper with a pedigree of exposing politicians’ double standards?
Or am I missing something?
Have they taken to selling ‘diet supplements’ and conspiracy theory?
We live in an age of deceit. All our organs of information peddle inaccuracies and outright lies and Jeff Bezos’ toy is no exception. For me, the hawking of conspiracy theory and diet supplements is not a dis qualifier; Might be BS…probably is. But no more than the NYT or WP.
So, as George Thorogood once asked: “Who do you love?”
So, as George Thorogood once asked; “who do you love?”
I prefer the WSJ but who cares what I prefer
surfing got rebranded in Waikiki by the beachboys and it spread to california. Twain?
What if North Shore was a cautionary tale about Kelly’s Wave Ranch and the WSL ruining the purity of surfing?
What do you mean, “what if”?
Spoiler alert – if you haven’t seen Surfing’s Citizen Kane read no further! Didn’t the Kook from Arizona quit surfing and head to Art College in New York, the wave pool kooks will come and go, the grumpy locals are here to stay! Maybe Dirk Ziff (2018 Waterman of the Year) and Natasha didn’t see it!
I didn’t see it all all
It’s not the bizarre, tantalizing nature of Surf Ranch that drew 54 of the world’s best surfers to Lemoore. It’s on the tour schedule. A job that’s easy to hate. But the baby needs a new pair of shoes. It’s more compulsory than anything else. Choice it is not. A pilgrimage to a new world Mecca it is not. Contractual obligation? Most certainly. Like signing a mortgage on a turn key house in order to avoid the pitfalls of an oceanic fixer upper. A WSL interest rate that will all but drown the inhabitants in debt with foreclosure ever presently lurking just around the corner. A coreclosure the WSL will happily file to sell the turn key surf experience to new buyers.
Coreclosure – good one Otto
Anyone else wonder if the judges get as bored with the monotony of the cookie cutter turns as we do, or does getting paid to watch this make a difference? At least Kolohe brought some excitement.
REVEALED: Mechanical Wave Is Surfed Mechanically
It’s good to see the top seeds actually going for it rather than the safety shit we saw yesterday
if u want a contest where everyone gets an exact 12 second barrel, surf ranch pro is yr place… feel bad for the judges… this is boring as shit…. like watching a flaccid, listless penis just hang there, doing nothing…..
“Surfing was born centuries ago in the South Pacific and Hawaiian islands, where it is called he’e nalu, then rebranded starting in the early 1900s in California.”
at least CA is consistent, if you take ‘rebranding’ to mean raping the purity out of.
Fuck this is a deeply incomplete vision of surfing history. I know it irritates many Americans but guess what, people surfed in other parts of the western world, even before Duke or Tom Blake, and formulated entire surf cultures ALL BY THEMSELVES without clever Californians to help them or make money from it or anything!!
Quite right. It’s interesting to think what it might have been without any Californian influence. Compare Huntington hop to bells, jbay, chopes, g-land etc. I’m not denying a lot of good also, but most cliche in surfing is a Californian, media based trope. Aussie dole ‘bludgers’ being another miss reading of reality.
Well I’m not decrying the Californian influence on global surfing at all, although I feel it is way more about board making than most of the other shit, that and money. But it wasn’t Hawaii – California – the rest of the world.
I can’t even lose money gambling heat by heat.
