It was announced today that the upcoming pay-per-view matchup pitting Tiger Woods against Phil Mickelson will be priced at $19.99. If you are unaware of this unique sporting moment, Tiger and Phil are golfers with a historic rivalry. The Professional Golf Association powers that be decided to trim the field down to the both of them for a one day banger and let’s read a little more about it from ESPN:
The match, which will be played on the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, will begin at noon locally (3 p.m. ET).
The winner will take home the entire $9 million pot.
During the match, Woods and Mickelson will make side challenges against each other, with winnings being donated to the golfer’s charity of choice.
Sources said fans won’t be able to watch the matchup live in person, as there will be no on-site tickets sold.
So there you go and if the World Surf League is not forking over $19.99 to observe then I am writing directly to Fiji c/o Erik Logan because ain’t this exactly what we want?
Now, the golf tour is not getting cut or curtailed. This is a specialty event custom made for fun. I don’t know exactly how the format would work for surfing. Three 45 minute heats a day? One three hour super session? Something mobile? Start at Snapper end at Burleigh? I don’t exactly know but there is something here no?

Fuck ’em. It used to be free and if the WSL can’t afford to broadcast it then let the fucking sponsors broadcast it themselves. I used to get by reading the results in Tracks or occasionally in the newspaper if they could sneak a paragraph of results in between the horse races and badminton. I wont pay for something that is mildly interesting. I’d rather pay for porn, and even that is free!

Ya they could have the top ten auto qualify for the main event and have the other 20 duke it out in a pre event that is not part of the broad cast. Nobody wants to half these guys surf anyway.
Should be like the Quiksilver Trials at Bells. Effectively a separate comp and the top 8? (I forget how many it was) got seeded into the main event. This two tier thing is shit.
I’ll pay ZAR 20.00 (USD 1.37) without feeling squeezed. I’ll grumpily pay up to ZAR 50 but then they owe me a spectacular show.
Add a gaggle of adult beginners into the line-up with a #takeeverywave mentality, and I’ll get very generous with the plastic!
Mickelson hasn’t met a bet he didn’t give serious consideration.

I wouldn’t pay a penny, it’s always better to paddle out yourself and catch your own waves.
I wouldn’t pay either and would always much rather surf than watch. I do watch most of the CT events or at least check the heat analyzer for guys I like to watch simply bc I like to watch good surfing just like I like to watch good basketball, etc. I also usually surf twice a day most days albeit sometimes only for 30 mins or so both ends of the day between kids, work etc.
I know you’ve been posting for years under various monikers like Tony from Big Island, Freerider etc. I know you resonate with the whole Dora ethos and although I don’t care for the guy, I do understand why he got so bitter watching the pre-commercialism uncrowded purity days of the Bu disappear right in front of his eyes, and I get the appeal of that generation.
I’ve surfed that spot countless times and used to paddle over to first point at dark in the summer and try and catch a few waves without at least 3 dudes in front and behind me. I always used to try and imagine what it’d be like surfing that wave in the early days with nobody around and feel the same way about my local spots when a bunch of sissified entitled millennials paddle around like they have equal rights when they’ve never paid a due in their lives and wouldn’t know what a hierarchy was unless it punched them in the face.
Sorry for the ramble…slow day at work but I have always been curious in your case as to what draws you to these sites…really don’t mean any offense at all and I sometimes ask myself the same question when there’s plenty of more productive uses of my time. Genuinely curious, what’s the appeal for you?

^^^^^^ This. I believe this is how 85% of surfers feel about it. If it’s convinioent and it’s on I’ll watch it but most of the time just check the heat analyzer …I don’t know anyone would pay to watch…..

Well I should clarify that with yes most of he time I do when there’s waves. I moved my wife and kids from Dana Point CA to the Outer Banks NC about a year ago. I lived about 5 mins from Salt Creek in CA which almost always has a wave except for summer when it gets too deep. But I always worked close to the coast also so could usually sneak out before and/or after work and then get a couple long sessions on the weekends usually somewhere other than Creek. If you’re at all familiar with that spot, you’ll understand why.
Here on the Outer Banks, it’s slightly less consistent but there’s still waves more often than not and you’re never more than a half mile from the beach here. Lots of good sandbars right up the street from my house so it’s really easy to jump in the water for a few waves and get home without missing a beat.
I’ve got three kids aged 4 and under who I love like I never imagined possible but man I’d go outta my mind with depression and misery if I couldn’t surf consistently. Paddled out solo day before yesterday in dirt brown 2 foot sideways drifty sharky 50 degree wind chop and had a blast save for feeling like a piece of human chum with a hundred sets of eyes scoping me from below.
In other words, the kind of conditions 100% of people on this site or anywhere else for that matter aside from myself and a select few other extreme frothers wouldn’t take a second look at. I surf everything…big, small, clean, blown out, sunny, freezing, polluted, doesn’t matter.
After 30 plus years of surfing and traveling I’m proud to say I’m every bit as much a surf joneser as I was when I was 12.
Please forgive my long winded ness. This passes for Friday night excitement these days…
