Sensational: Hurley wields axe on surf team; no surfers to be re-signed as contracts expire!

But Hurley beard oil, beard wash and hair pomade coming soon…

Christmas doesn’t last forever.

And, Hurley, whose surf team is, at least momentarily, one of the best ever assembled, John John, Kolohe Andino, Filipe Toledo, Julian Wilson, Carissa Moore, will be gradually wound down as Hurley’s new owner, Bluestar Alliance, takes a rationalist approach to the biz, according to multiple sources

Already, all trace of the Hurley family, who were backed by sock, underwear and T-Shirt brand Stance to buy the biz from Nike but were outbid by Bluestar, has been wiped.

As reported two months ago, the way Bluestar works is it identifies brands it wants to buy and once they get the keys, “our team of experts embark on a complete and thorough understanding of the brand’s potential channels of distribution and price point strategies. We create tools such as brand development profiles, trend guides, style guides and marketing strategies. These marketing materials portray graphic illustrations and a strategic marketing road map to enhance consumer brand recognition.”

The buzz we’re getting from inside Hurley HQ is that focus has shifted from R and D, maintaining a dazzling surf team, high-end accounts and so on to a model focussed on nothing but the bottom line.

Which means that anything that can fit a H on its tube, shoe, can or box will be licensed.

Hair Prod.

And, for the surfers, when your contract expires you’re out.

Which ain’t surprising.

The sponsored surfer is the magic elf of the industry, his, her, ability to influence enough sales to justify a million-dollar contract one of the great intangibles.

So, who we got?

Filipe Toledo re-signed with H last year so he’s got a sticker until 2024.

Kolohe has two years left.

We’re told Hurley’s new owners used the injury clause in John John’s four-million-dollar-a-year contract to force his hand at Pipeline.

Teenage phenoms Eli Hanneman and Barron Mamiya, are gone or about to go.

Surfing greats Julian Wilson, Carissa and John John, will all be looking for new stickers and sugar daddies and mammies when their contracts run out.

To where will they roam?

Billabong has a full roster, which includes the world champ and the rookie of the year, Volcom was recently sold to a maker of velour tracksuits and Rip Curl to a camping retailer.

So many kids rip these days. Would be nice if these pros didn’t make 10mil +

Im sure O’Neill will gladly take John John back, at discount. lol
They never wanted to let him go anyway, but got outbid by Hurley after blowing their budget to keep Jordy.

Remember there was a time in the early 1970s when it became uncool to be cool.

The contests stopped, Surfer Magazine buried the Surfer Poll, wetsuits were black, surfboards were white, leashes were iffy and it all kind of went underground after the over-exposure and “waxploitation” of the 1960s.

Maybe that’s what is happening now?

A stand-down for a while and then something else emerges?

Noncompetitor

Looking forward to the Drug Aware Weedmaps Bluestar Trestles Pro presented by Corona!

Nike selling Hurley to this group of despicable corporatists reminds me of Darth Vader sending Han Solo’s frozen body to Jabba the Hut in The Empire Strikes Back.

Racist? What racist? Because Australia has steers?

listen you fuckwit , you crossed a line with yellow Peril, and replacing Arabs in the mid east with white scandanavians ………sounds like a whitemans final solution , stand the heat from you …gunna look ya up when I get over there….

commenter

listen you fuckwit , you crossed a line with yellow Peril,

The Yellow Peril (also the Yellow Terror and the Yellow Spectre) is a racist color-metaphor that the peoples of East Asia are an existential danger to the Western world. As a psycho-cultural perception of menace from the Eastern world, fear of the Yellow Peril was more racial than national, a fear derived, not from concern with a specific source of danger, from any one country or people, but from a vaguely ominous, existential fear of the faceless, nameless horde of yellow people opposite the Western world. As a form of xenophobia, the Yellow Terror is the fear of the non-white Other from the Orient, as imagined in the racialist book The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy (1920) by Lothrop Stoddard.[1]

and replacing Arabs in the mid east with white scandanavians .

Well look at Norway. How do they handle their oil wealth?

Are they invading Sweden or Denmark?

Not any more. They were over that around 1100 AD.

Is Norway causing refugee criseses?

No.

Is Norway barrel-bombing their citizens?

Is America having to bomb Norway and invade them and sanction them and rebuke them to keep them in control?

No.

Norway has controlled its population and converted its grid to 98% renewable energy and they have banked their mineral wealth to the tune of a $1 trillion sovereign wealth fund. Democratic Socialism works in Norway.

Excellent medical care.

Free education.

It’s the best-run country in the world and a model for a possible future – if the future isn’t controlled by fuckheads like Trump and Putin and Assad.

The Arabs are sitting on a massive, free prize and they can’t handle it. At all. Trillions in oil wealth and the whole region is one big, bloody quagmire. Hundreds of thousands of lives lost and trillions wasted keeping them from destroying each other. So let them destroy each other and send in the Oil Vikings.

Turn it over to desert-loving Scandinavians. No more wars. No more trouble. Just production and wealth and peace.

sounds like a whitemans final solution ,

Well there are good white men and bad white men. Just as there are good and bad yellow men and brown men. But right now, the brown men are causing a shitload of non-stop trouble and maybe the world is sick and tired of hearing about it and dealing with it.

That seems to be what just happened in Iran and Iraq. What would happen if Uncle Sam really got pissed at a country and said, ‘Screw it!’ and let them have it. That was the solution in Germany and Japan and have those countries been any trouble since? Nope.

Islam is sitting on a resource the world needs and they are screwing it up.

Islam needs a right proper spanking and maybe that’s what has begun – The Final Solution, so to speak.

stand the heat from you …gunna look ya up when I get over there….

You and Bazza Bitch should partner up. Between the two of you geniuses, you’d end up in Kansas.

you do realize that the final solution was an Aryan one , which after reading your opinions , paints a very clear picture , racial and Religious vilification , money and power are your idols , you are a very sad person , seems like no self respect . One of Trump’s advisors lives in Malibu and I asked him to call The Donald for me.

He did and I said: “Mr. President, can you bomb Australia next please, Your Trigger Happy Majesty?”

He said, “Sure I can bomb Australia for yaz, but why?”

I said, “They got an attitude sir, and are non-appreciative of all America has given them: Surfing, shortboards, automobiles, airplanes, computers, color TV, rock and roll. Not to mention saving their bacon during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Wasn’t for Uncle Sam, they’d a been in deep kimchi.”

Trump said, “You got that right. I woulda been at the Battle of the Coral sea, but those damned bone spurs.”

I continued: “I believe you mate, but thousands wouldn’t. All Australia has given back is Kylie Minogue and Russel Crowe and the Bee Gees and that Outback Steakhouse Announcer cunt.”

Trump said, “Yeah that cunt’s annoying. Makes me want to grab it. He needs killin'”

I said, “Yes sir. A bunch of them Australians need it. Teach them a lesson about appreciation. Australia’s a desert nation and you know how we feel about them. Nothing but trouble and strife.”

Trump said, “Hey that makes sense to me. Anywhere in particular?”

I said, “Torquay.”

Trump said, “Torquay? Why?”

I said, “Well Torquay has a Q and an A and an R, like Iraq. There is no I in Torquay. That means you should bomb it.”

Trump said, “Okay, will do, Thanks for your vote.”

I said, “Don’t miss.”

Trump said, “Uncle Sam don’t miss.”

so do you think 0.005% is fair tax on Apple?

commenter

so do you think 0.005% is fair tax on Apple?

No idea. I’m not a tax attorney but I wonder how many billions of dollars Apple has paid in taxes in the US and Europe and around the world. Plenty. This is a company that creates jobs, creates wealth and makes superior products. I’m sure they pay a lot.

Why did Ireland protest that judgment, I wonder?

Is that you quoting Don , as a reliable US Critic of tax?

You’re quoting Don. You’re the one who loves him, or at least are obsessed with him.

So what has Don paid in Tax , and how may times has he Chapter 11’d USA investors , please quote him more!

Apple believes every company has a responsibility to pay its taxes, and as the largest taxpayer in the world, Apple pays every dollar it owes in every country around the world. We’re proud of the economic contributions we make to the countries and communities where we do business.

We’re presenting the facts on this page in response to reporting by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Among the inaccuracies in these reports:
The changes Apple made to its corporate structure in 2015 were specially designed to preserve its tax payments to the United States, not to reduce its taxes anywhere else. No operations or investments were moved from Ireland.

Far from being “untouched by the United States,” Apple pays billions of dollars in taxes to the US at the statutory 35 percent rate on investment income from its overseas cash.

Apple’s effective tax rate on foreign earnings is 21 percent — a figure easily calculated from public filings. This rate has been consistent for many years.

Last month, in response to questions from the ICIJ, the New York Times and others, Apple provided the following statement:

“The debate over Apple’s taxes is not about how much we owe but where we owe it. As the largest taxpayer in the world we’ve paid over $35 billion in corporate income taxes over the past three years, plus billions of dollars more in property tax, payroll tax, sales tax and VAT. We believe every company has a responsibility to pay the taxes they owe and we’re proud of the economic contributions we make to the countries and communities where we do business.

Under the current international tax system, profits are taxed based on where the value is created. The taxes Apple pays to countries around the world are based on that principle. The vast majority of the value in our products is indisputably created in the United States — where we do our design, development, engineering work and much more — so the majority of our taxes are owed to the US.

When Ireland changed its tax laws in 2015, we complied by changing the residency of our Irish subsidiaries and we informed Ireland, the European Commission and the United States. The changes we made did not reduce our tax payments in any country. In fact, our payments to Ireland increased significantly and over the last three years we’ve paid $1.5 billion in tax there — 7 percent of all corporate income taxes paid in that country. Our changes also ensured that our tax obligation to the United States was not reduced.

We understand that some would like to change the tax system so multinationals’ taxes are spread differently across the countries where they operate, and we know that reasonable people can have different views about how this should work in the future. At Apple we follow the laws, and if the system changes we will comply. We strongly support efforts from the global community toward comprehensive international tax reform and a far simpler system, and we will continue to advocate for that.”

America as it is now sucks. I’m American and trace my heritage to the Mayflower. It saddens me how materialistic Americans are and how ignorant most are.
I work in an industry that gets me outside everyday speaking with employees and business owners. It’s disturbing how greedy people are. Also they are brainwashed and believe everything they see on TV. 65% have no passports so we know they’re not traveling.
These surf companies are run by people that have the same mentality as every other greedy corporation in this screwed up country. They make millions off the backs of slave labor abroad, sell to dummies, and screw those actually contributing to their success. Surfers need to start boycotting these brands. Start new ones and give the middle finger to the old name brands.

Brutus

Nobody needs to be worth 100’s of millions of dollars. That’s the problem with the US. Greed and gluttony. We have the fattest and most ignorant population of the top “wealthiest” countries in the world.
I’m disgusted by “ugly” Americans.

commenter

Nobody needs to be worth 100’s of millions of dollars.

Well the people who are worth hundreds of millions usually have created a lot of wealth that improves the lives of others: Stock market, etc.

I know lot of hundred millionaires and billionaires and they all tend to be very smart, kind people. Private, but sophisticated.

That’s the problem with the US. Greed and gluttony.

I’ve tried to find an artist to do seven illustrations showing how Trump defines each of the Seven Deadly Sins – which he does, joyfully.

We have the fattest and most ignorant population of the top “wealthiest” countries in the world. I’m disgusted by “ugly” Americans.

just doesn’t have the $’S , is probably one of the most conflicted souls I have come across.

You are completely full of beans. I think you’re the senile one. Breathing in toxic fumes your whole life. Yuck.

I mean, it is a waste of time arguing with some dingaling surfboard shaper. Not sure why I bother really. Nothing to gain from such stunning irrelevance. I mean being irrelevant in the surfing world is truly irrelevant.

No I always dislike Trump and never defend him. You are confused. Too much mull.

but created more in 1 year than you have in your whole lifetime.

Different kind of creation.

Did you know I worked with those couple of Seppos , Tom and Kelly , and they won World titles on new experimental designs, you know ,like original designs and technology?

They could win World Titles on their grannies front door. Not interesting.

When you defend the USA are you aware that you sound like and use the same logic as Trump?

Incorrect.

It’s so funny when you talk about your experiences in Hawaii , mainlander just couldn’t work out how to fit in…

I fit in fine. I got invited to make a speech at Brock’s memorial and I did that at Waimea Bay. It was great. Poor Brock. I wrote a memorial piece for George Downing when he passed. Helped Buzzy with his book. Helped Vicky D with her book about her surfing mother. Paddled Kewalo to Canoes every day. Etc. Etc. I don’t want to fit in. The surfing world is lame. The North Shore is overrun.

…but I digress , signed Dingaling

Brutus

SurfTeks, do they still exist , they would suit your character I think , made in Asia , inferior popouts of shaper/designers , no spine , cheap core, hmmmm sounds like ….??

SurfTeks, do they still exist

I think so, although they kind of blew it. They started the SUP market, but got usurped by others. uSUPed? As far as I’m concerned, Surftech died when Randy left.

, they would suit your character I think , made in Asia , inferior popouts of shaper/designers , no spine , cheap core, hmmmm sounds like ….??

They’re not inferior at all. They’re super light, super strong and people love riding them. I worked in the factory in Hawaii for a while and couldn’t believe how many they sold. And they also make the best beginner boards and beach boy boards.

I only ride the standups. Still have a 12″ 1′ that’s great for long distance but still rides waves.

When I was growing up we wouldn’t be caught dead riding anything but a hand-shaped board. But times change and now that surfboards cost like $1000 people want to buy something quality, that isn’t going to break and is going to last. Especilally standups. Surftech is the way to go with those boards. Also have an 11′ 6″ in Hawaii.

I don’t expect you to understand surf history

Yeah I only wrote 130 issues of Surfer MAgazine and about two dozen books. I don’t understand it at all.

, the Greatest USA competitive surfers,World Championships on new designed/Technology surfboards….

They rode Surftechs?

.creative is creative , but as you are not a creative person , you might not understand!

See above for the creative.

Everyone in the surf industry thinks everyone else is full of shit, and everyone is right.

“helped” haha , WTF does that mean?

Got him started, structured it, warned him that books are a lot of work. And I was right, Took him a couple years but he got it done. I help people write their books. I do it a lot

I could even help you with your earth-shaking, foundation crumbling expose on the underbelly of the surfing world except that: NO BODY CARES and it will be a huge waste of time..

Australia has always been ahead of the US when it comes to their magazines.

Wrong. American magazines outpaced and outsold the rest of the world. American mags might not have been as vulgar as the Aussie mags, but vulgar is lame and just covering up for insecurities.

Surfer Magazine was the #1 magazine for decades. The Internet killed it.

The US mags were soft as hell. Like the mainland surfers.

You mean like Kelly? He’s soft. Most of the Hawaiian surfers end up dead or in jail. Is that hard? Kelly is still going. And Tom Curren? That mainland surfer? Arguably the two most influential surfers of the second half of the 20th Century were mainland surfers.

I grew up in Hawaii and watched these companies grow firsthand, new the guys that started them.

Knew.

Yes you sat at a magazine office while the rest of us lived this.

Oh we lived it. We shaped it and presented it to the world, for better or worse. I guarantee you we had more impact than whatever you were doing in Hawaii – which was probably not much.

I’m sad for the industry but they sold out and I saw the writing on the wall once they did.

They created an industry and a lot of people thrived and then they got tired of it. People get bored. I call it The 10 Year Rule. Do something for 10 years and it’s time to move on. The people who created the surf industry moved on. Time for someone to pick up the pieces.

Things ebb and flow in life and I’m confident that surfing will be ok once they get rid of the phony people running it as it is now.

Time for a new generation of surfers to start for real companies and take the place of Billabong and Hurley and Quiksilver and Volcom. Fashion changes. Tastes change.

You’re in Hawaii living it. You do it. Or do you just want to snipe anonymously from the sidelines at people who actually do things – like most people on bitchgripe.com.

Time for a change. Nothing can stay the same forever.

Cutting and pasting is so cute.

Cutting and pasting is so cute.

It’s how I distinguish my intelligent answers to your not so intelligent prompts.

I actually was doing a lot in Hawaii.

I was just there for three years. I think Oahu is sad. I call it The Angry Island.

Too expensive, too many homeless, too much drugs, too much theft. Waikiki needs that mega tsunami to come through and take it back down to lagoons and palm groves.

Besides being an outstanding water woman I graduated from university while working for a best selling business book author.

People who describe themselves as outstanding sometimes aren’t.

You’re talking smack about Hawaiian surfers and last I checked they’re still alive and well.

Well you were talking smack about mainland surfers so you got smacked back. And a lot of them really aren’t doing so well, are they? I was talking about that with another media type: It’s hard to be an ex-legend in Hawaii. Uncomfortable.

Unfortunately a few are deceased but mostly because of natural causes.
I’m involved in the Sport of Kings these days

You can have it. I had enough.

Sorry you couldn’t cut it in Hawaii. I’m pretty sure all the problems you point out are everywhere in the U.S. 70k Americans die of opioid overdoses and that’s definitely not because of Hawaii.
I’m guessing by your not so intelligent answer that you don’t know what the other Sport of Kings is.

Sorry you couldn’t cut it in Hawaii.

Wasn’t a matter of cutting it. Just lost interest. The place doesn’t feel right – at all. Wrote three books there – two with Hawaiian surfers – read a speech at Brock’s memorial, paddled Kewalo to Canoes and did other things. Couple of Pipe Masters. One cancelled Eddie.

Met one nice girl from France and had two cuckoo girls on the boat – one was bipolar, the other was ADHD and a tiramisu of neuroses. And a girl I grew up with went cuckoo too.

Just don’t dig the place. Too damned many people. Too much traffic.

And I’m hipsterallergenic, so the whole tattooed top-knot slacker North Shore scene makes me break out. It’s all been done in the past. Now it’s just Millennials re-inventing the wheel. It’s dumb.

Was a time when North Shore was a quiet place where you surfed yourself silly, got a SPAM musubi and Coke icee at Kammies smoked cheap weed played Scrabble and that was that.

I’m pretty sure all the problems you point out are everywhere in the U.S. 70k Americans die of opioid overdoses and that’s definitely not because of Hawaii.

Hawaii hmassive drug problem, and it’s sad. Especially around the Ala Wai and Kaisers parking lot. Too many homeless people. Too much drugs. Too much theft. It’s supposed to be a happy place. There’s a lot of lost and unhappy on land.

I’m guessing by your not so intelligent answer that you don’t know what the other Sport of Kings is.

Taxation? Hunting? Decapitation? Horse racing? Polo? Producing illegitimate children? Syphillis

Enjoy your bubble.

Sorry to burst yours.

I agree, the NS is not the same. But who’s to blame?
Probably the media for hyping it. I remember being able to stand in the middle of Kam highway and not see a car for 30 minutes. More if it were nighttime. It got commercialized by the surf industry. And now those same people want to screw over the surfers that built their brands. That’s what the original topic was about.
Lame corporations.

commenter

I agree, the NS is not the same. But who’s to blame?

You are.

Probably the media for hyping it.

It’s the Internet. Print only does so much damage. The Internet is relentless.

I remember being able to stand in the middle of Kam highway and not see a car for 30 minutes.

Stay away from the brown acid.

More if it were nighttime. It got commercialized by the surf industry.

And Blue Crush. And North Shore: The Movie. But mostly the Internet. The webcasts. That’s what draws people.

And now those same people want to screw over the surfers that built their brands.

No they paid those surfers well when the brands were being built. They were paid well for surfing. A sweet deal. No one was complaining.

That’s what the original topic was about.
Lame corporations.

Well they might be lame corporations now but those companies were started by surfers who wanted to do some good – and they did.

I am not whining you poor pathetic soul , or is it the Bi-polar that everybody in your area says you have ?

So now I understand that you are using the Master Yoda wisdom and enlightenment course to educate me …..FFS get back on your medicine or please seek Professional help……….this getting creepy, bye!

Brutus

So how can Trump be the anti-christ , if there is no Jesus Christ , or are you saying that Trump is your alter ego?

I never said evil , sad maybe. to seen no legacy or thought for the people who worked for the Surf empires , who now are broke , no jobs or futures but we had a good time justifys leaving the world in a much worse state?

Didn’t Yoda have an affair with Master Luke?

Brutus

Hmm it seems like in your world the end justifies the Means?

I wrie like Yoda speaks , now there’s this mornings quote….I love Yoda , wasn’t he an American hero?

Strength and vulgarity , money and power …..now that sounds like the old surf Industry , or todays MAGA Mega USA!!

Impressed you believe in Jesus Christ and how smart you think you are !

Brutus

haha, yep will be devastating for probably quite a few of your heros , insider trading , which Co’s were set up with drug money , the great news is that I have some serious quotes now from Trumpian Californian about the reality that Merrycans see them selves as…Deserving Donald and the fall of the Seppo empire….
reading books is probably your source of news , a bit passe but each to his own…must be hard being a mental giant ………a cultural ambassador for Donald , especially his enviroment plans
