The professional surf watching community was left in various stages of stunned outrage, yesterday, when five judges sitting in a booth overlooking Narrabeen’s wobbly lefts and rights deemed World Champion Italo Ferreira’s fabulous full rotation air in the dying minutes of his heat against Connor Coffin to be incomplete.
Per the great Longtom’s assessment, “My main beef with the panel goes back earlier in the heat to a left that Italo surfed that should have been at least a point and half or two better than Connor’s scoring waves. Ferreira, in a display of passionate emotion, stomped his board in half.

“Isso desmotiva qualquer um, só que eu não! Eu ligo o foda-se e vou pra próxima. Obrigado pelo carinho” which translates (via the translation button) as “This offends anyone, except me! I’ll turn the fuck on and move on to the next one. Thank you for caring.”
I assume the correct translation would actually be “This offends everyone except me…” but you get the picture.

Or maybe they’ll try to rig an all Rip Curl top 5?…Gabby, Morgan Cibilic, Connor, Owen Wright and Crosby Colapinto.

I thought all the hub ub was regarding the HUGE air backside rotor Italo did at like the 4 minute mark, not knowing there was another (not as high) rotor (I feel like an even greater kook for typing ‘rotor’) later in the heat (I’ve been mainly watching the heat analyzer. Muted I’ll note so as to save my brain from being ‘Turpeled’….kinda like wearing a helmet.) That one was definitely debatable. As someone else mentioned, Italo should have just claimed it and jumped off his board before white wash gobbled him.
Moved from Brasil a long ago, but pretty sure “…Eu ligo o foda-se e vou pra próxima…” means something like “… I turn the fuck you [mode] on and move on…”.

We can all do turns – but we cannot rotate in the air and land on the board. We just can’t. So someone please explain how the fuck a turn could ever score higher than a rotating air? Should the impossible not beat the possible every single time?
We can all do turns, but some do the turns much better than others. What if someone like Italo started surfing switch. Should he be scored way higher because of that? What if someone could do kick flips consistently, should that be scored because it’s really hard? What if Italo could be going down the line then do a back flip, land on his board and keep going. A certain 10 yes? No. Certain turns (the ones done by Morgan Cibolec for example) will always score as they should. By the way, I do think Italo was totally robbed, just arguing the idea that, for example, a flat low height rotated air should always score higher than turns.
If someone knits a sweater while riding on the wave they should get a 10 no matter how ugly the sweater is.
9.5 minimum for sure.
