You can help!
Most surfers, when they close their eyes at night or keep them open whilst at word desks, dream in rainbows. In swaying palms, warm water, plentiful waves, limes in coconuts, Spam musubi, cracks and false cracks. Of Hawaii. Oh those islands, the most isolated in the entire world, floating free, pounded by waves and legend are where we all want to be, all things equal.
Hawaii.
An earthly paradise.
Except the State of Hawaii is currently staggering as its population shrinks yet again, residents fleeing for the mainland in droves. According to Honolulu Civil Beat, one of the finest news organizations on earth, this “drain” is leading to all sorts of un-chill problems. Per the story, and according to Peter Ho, chairman and chief executive of Bank of Hawaii, Hawaii’s population decline reflects a hollowing out of the state’s middle class, which he calls “an existential economic issue for the state.”
What’s even harsher, the problems driving people out of the state “involve a broad range of things, none of which is easy to solve, says Carl Bonham, executive director of the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization.”
“There isn’t one solution,” he said. “Or we would have already tackled it.”
Well, what is one of the problems?
Brain drain.
According to research, “almost 15% of Hawaii-born people living on the mainland are between the ages of 18 and 44 and have a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 7.7% of those remaining in Hawaii. Another finding: in sheer numbers, there are more Hawaii-born people with a bachelor’s degree or higher living on the mainland than there are who stayed in the state.”
There are organizations now in place trying to remedy by keeping smart ‘uns home but I think we, here, can help. Do you have a college degree?
Move to Hawaii!
Boom.

Believing in the shutdown, mask, and vaxx didn’t help. Read more, and thank the supreme court for putting the first nail in the coffin of stupidity
For me personally, I grew up in Hawaii but moved because it was so hard to get a job that had real room for growth. Despite having a bachelors degree, no one wanted to give someone young a chance, so I moved to LA where it was easy to get hired. I went from 1 to 2 interviews a month to 3 in a day.
I’m a “local,” Maui senior citizen resident & totally agree. Among the miseries here are the Gestapo like rule we’ve been living under. In the beginning of this so called “covid” fiasco the locals appeared to be targeted more so than our tourists. The restrictions have worsened with time. We now have to have a card verifying that we’ve been vaccinated TWICE in order to get into any store, restaurant or bar etc not to mention the continuance of mask wearing. I don’t know if tourists are aware of this prior to arriving. There are long lines, sometimes a block long just trying to get something to eat not to mention the extremely high cost of everything here. My family has been here since 1920. Being in my late 60’s it’s going to be difficult to start elsewhere but I am definitely ready to pack it up & get the heck out of Dodge!
Boom? Yea right! I’m a 64 year old experienced former tech executive who ran organizations composed of thousands of employees. I recently decided to shift my career focus in order to try and give back to the world. I completed a MS degree with a top-tier university in the sciences. I’ve tried to find employment in Hawaii with no success due to ageism. No one wants to hire an experienced older person. An answer for Hawaii would be to leverage the idea of employing experienced people wishing to spend their later years working in areas where their experience can make a difference. Not all retirees want to spend every waking moment playing golf.
Fresh take
Just like Reunion.
Except it’s not tropical.
It’s not an island.
People don’t speak French.
The sharks aren’t Tigers.
There’s been no fatal attacks.
And the left is way better than St. Leu.
Whether you want to hear it or not, your local civic leaders need to change their tune. Hawaii should be flourishing in many areas but fail to capitalize on its natural resources, people, hospitality, agriculture and more.
I hear its rather stinky there
What an ignorant final line…”Do you have a college degree? Move to Hawaii!”
The comments are flooded with white people pretending to understand the crisis Hawaii is facing. Nobody cares about your little corner of California where home prices are going up. Native Hawaiians are being priced out of their ancestral land! Our ancestors were here before a white person stepped foot on our sands and its a travesty every time a kanaka Hawaiʻi has to leave because of greed, limited resources, and next to zero opportunites to get ahead. Sorry Ken and Karen, sit this one out.
A little late. 95% of the population is already non native.
i’d gladly split the backseat of a junked out Mitsubishi on the west side with anyone of you commentariat for like $350 of ice
We are great neighbours.
If you like getting pranked
For persons with an education, there is little to do in Hawaii other than work for the State of Hawaii, the Federal Government or the visitor industry.
The people that can sell up and leave, do so – the lifestyle haoles and the uneducated locals stay in Hawaii as a permanent underclass, many of them seething with resentment and racial grievances.
Don’t forget
Jews were the original slaves
.
Let me start by saying this. Y’all don’t know shit about Hawaii or kanaka maoli take it from a real kanaka/native Hawaiian who has roots to the aina and culture you want to know why locals are moving out to go to the mainland. Because we have a clown running the state his name is David Ige. Who taxes the people like a fucking leech then we have haoles/malihinis bunch of entitled clowns who come and by up all the houses and turn them into vacation rentals they don’t have to live here for 10 years. Not even 5 years before they can buy homes Wich is what the gov should do.but aye money talks right smh. Gas prices are high ASF a gallon of milk is fucking 12 dollars for fucks sale. And for you beach grit with your trash ass blogs just cause Hawaiians are moving off island doesn’t mean it’s an invite to come and live here we no more room we are fucking full
Do Hawaiians really say “y’all”? I though that was some southern thing.
By the way the shit you’re describing is happeing everywhere.
Haha. I caught that too Stink. You’ll never hear Hawaiian locals saying y’all. It’s totally redneck.
Ask Billy Kemper’s ten gallon hat
Same thing happening here in what was country West Oz. Rich city / east coast people fleeing with their money , buying everything , clogging up the roads with their BMW,s and Teslas , stupid little gourmet dogs, high maintenance botoxed cunty women , then complaining about lack of amenity . All the things that people used to move to the country to get away from
Buy a big house at the beach and “instant local” mentality .
I remember when every dog was a mongel!
95 Hawaiians that’s lmao that’s laughable
“Up and riding” and “Out da back” need to be retired due to overuse.
Clearly, clearly this is also the similar scenario at the Jersey Shore (I know, there is not even 5 BG comment section people who give a rat’s a$$ about the New Jersey)… Living in many of the suburbs on the coast in New Jersey is becoming quite impossible unless you live in a “house” the size of a tool shed (like me) or you’re a hedge fund manager or Mr. Gravy… as extreme wealth takes over once modest blue collar surfer dirtbag towns things are changing mightily here every day… and with it actual surfing and the culture once here disappears with it replaced by yuppies on Wavestorms year round who are tiring of their private golf club memberships… we are doomed… all of us in the U.S. who followed a life of mistakes in order to surf and are clinging to being dirtbags…
We had a good run.
We did. We did…
I was going to accuse you of overreacting, but then I looked at house prices in my favorite dumpy little beach town (Long Branch) and… daaamn. A crappy ranch on a small lot went from $300k to $1.5M when I wasn’t looking. Last time I was there (a month ago) the surf was decent, the lineup was nearly empty (and no wavestorms), and the Inkwell still makes a good Dutch coffee. Horrifying in summer though.
Lonbg Branch makes me cry everytime I drive my kid to the skatepark there (one of the final vestiges of dirtbagness left in LB).
Can I get into Oz on the Djokovic exception? Oh, wait I’m already vaxxed but I truly want to live in a country controlled by Xi the supreme leader!
Nobody wants you here. ya fuckstick.
Yeah, we fukstik full.
Hey should I buy in Toorak in Melbourne or Bronte in Sydney?
Bethany should not be in an announcing booth, as stoked as she is.
She is an amazing human being
Sure she is, but not booth material. Neither is the guy with her. Used to require skills to talk on camera.
I’d rather hear a real person share their experience than listen to a trained monkey
She’s an absolute gem
PTSD?
she’s like, whatevs.
Breast feeding her baby on the beach and then going out and charging big pipe with only one arm is super human
You bet.
And she’s a clean blood!!
I’m sure she could bird dog some dirty old crip ahlstroms back on the mayflower home to Kyoto Denmark
big big fan!!!
Pipe looks amazing right now, chicks are charging,
What is a false crack and should I give myself one for not knowing?
https://www.youtube.com/wat…
Bethany charging into 1000 foot closeouts.
Yeet!!!
So yeet
I’m loving yeet.
It’s the favored exclamation in our house now, I got it from the 6 year old
Tell that champion 6 year old to come up with some more. The WSL needs thinkers!
I’m on it
False crack medi vac. Meaning you get punched in the face when not expecting one and then taken in the ambulance to the hospital.
So, hard to do to yo self
Fuk yes
