A mere theoretical in our surfing world until a short few weeks ago when Sasha Jane Lowerson smashed her competition to become the first surfer to win both men’s and women’s after a dominant performance at the Western Australian longboarding championship.
Inspiring to many but confusing to others.
Is it fair for those born male to switch and smash females in sport?
Is it proper?
The debate roiled with photographer Peter King declaring “stay out of women’s sports” and the world’s greatest surfer, Kelly Slater, positing that trans athletes should be given their own category.
Well, Lia Thomas, who became the first trans athlete to win an NCAA Division I national championship, in swimming, spoke out for the first time just hours ago after declining interviews for months. In the fading light of Lowerson’s glory.
The biggest misconception, I think, is the reason I transitioned. People will say, ‘Oh, she just transitioned so she would have an advantage, so she could win.’ I transitioned to be happy, to be true to myself.
Trans women competing in women’s sports does not threaten women’s sports as a whole. Trans women are a very small minority of all athletes. The NCAA rules regarding trans women competing in women’s sports have been around for 10-plus years. And we haven’t seen any massive wave of trans women dominating.
If you say, like, you can compete, but you can’t score or you’re in an extra lane nine, that’s very othering towards trans people. And it is not offering them the same level of respect and opportunity to play and to compete.
It’s no different than a cis woman taking a spot on a travel team or a scholarship. It’s a part of athletics, where people are competing against each other. It’s not taking away opportunities from cis women, really. Trans women are women, so it’s still a woman who is getting that scholarship or that opportunity.
I very much wanted to ask Lowerson these questions, though was rebuffed, and appreciate Thomas’s clarity but what do you think? Does it assuage your toxic wonderings?
Do you feel those who swam, or surfed, against felt non-dominated?
How then can we then measure waves in German male lower legs?

In the primates, the males are naturally larger than females. They are larger, taller with longer limbs which is an advantage in sports. No amount of hormone therapy will change that. Transwomen should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports because they have an unfair advantage.
There should be no discussion. You’re born a man then you cannot compete in women’s sports. Where are the feminists? Oh yeah they only come out when it’s against a white normal Male. I watched a short interview with the WNBA star Brittney Griner and every mannerism was clearly male. She may wish she were male and identify as male but she must know that if she transitioned she would not have a career in the NBA.

From San bushmen to Australian Aboriginals and everywhere in between. it’s an aspect of the human gene pool that’s been around for hundreds of thousands of years or longer. Genetic traits don’t normally persist over space and time if they are not advantageous to the survival of a species. Is there a clear legal definition of being “trans”? Lia Thomas says she is now a woman and thus deserves to compete in women’s sports but I doubt a fellow would marry her and assume she was fully a woman capable of becoming pregnant.
I doubt many who compete as females in professional basketball, soccer, track and volleyball who secretly identify as males would transition to male to play in the respective leagues. They know they would have a huge disadvantage. Would Lia Thomas had she been born female and after transitioning choose to compete with males? I have my doubts.

This discussion was about trans people in sports. That has to do with gender identity, not sexuality. You’re confusing the discussion. I’m not speaking for anyone but myself. Believing that trans people deserve to participate in sports isn’t an intrusive belief.

Thanks for the clarity! Ya I saw a quote once that said “He who argues with a fool is surely a fool himself”. I was definitely on a fools errand trying and sort through that barrage of fallacies. Hopefully it helped me unearth my own perspective some on a subject I haven’t put a lot of thought into.

I like it how everyone is like, “I’ve never talked to a trans person about it”. What about the other girls competing? What is the point of them trying to excel in a sport when some dude can just come along and wipe them out. As for Lia Thomas’ comment that there aren’t many trans people so it won’t ruin the sport. We are now seeing it across every sport. There doesn’t have to be many (previously) men competing in women’s sport, due to their advantage, they are always going to end up at the top. This is the end of woman’s sport.
Women who are better at the sport will always win. Trans or regular woman. Just like the best guy at the sport wins it – if we look at male surfers Rasta has massive feet – and Ian Thorpe had massive feet, so it was like he was wearing flippers when he raced against normal feets.
Show me one sport where a woman has transitioned and beaten a man.
There aren’t any sports where that has happened, to my knowledge.
