“What is the loopiest concept for you to understand?”
The world champ and former WSL broadcaster Barton Lynch, who won his crown at perfect eight-to-twelve-foot Pipeline in one of pro surfing’s greatest days, has never been one to pull a punch, as they say.
Lynch, who is fifty-eight, was the sport’s most popular broadcaster before being dumped by the WSL for, it is rumoured, his role in the activist group Voices4Choices, which questioned vaccine mandates and the role of government during the COVID pandemic.
Lynch has since poured his considerable skill and insight into a podcast called The Stoked Bloke Show, which he operates with Peter King, the musician, pro surfer and former bandmate of Kelly Slater.
In the latest episode, Lynch lists four reasons why surf culture is “upside down.”
“It’s the craziest thing,” says Lynch. “We have our spiritual leader selling soft-tops at Costco, the world’s best surfer choosing not to go to Teahupoo and instead go on a sailing trip with his family and friends (co-host Peter King posits that since John John had an eighty percent chance at winning Teahupoo, which would’ve propelled him into the top five, if Finals Day was at Pipe, he probs would’ve showed in Tahiti), we have the number one surfer in the world (Stephanie Gilmore) with less points than two, three, four five and we have WSL turning its back on Pipeline as a finals venue and choosing Lowers.”
Lynch takes a breath and asks the listener,
“What is the loopiest concept for you to understand?”

Was lucky to be in a Central American country over the summer, Pacific coast side, with miles of empty beachbreak and trunkable water. Only issue was a nearby shrimp farm dumping its shit into the water, turning it all orangish and smelly. Other than that, maybe 20 surfers spread over quite a few peaks, and with a truck and knowledge of roads, hundreds of empty peaks all around. Downsize is on big swells, it’s all just closeouts. But, it’s still out there, for people willing to pack it in and relocate.
In a way why I’m hopeful for wave pools. Will balance the crowd out some, or at least make vibes more mellow. I know at my home break there are only good waves 10 to 20 days a year and it sucks as EVERYONE now comes out. A wave pool there would smooth that energy throughout the year.

THIS is why I came back to the surfing as knowing I will be likely be around assholes in the lineup is like my career. But mostly I realized I can avoid the surfing assholes easier than my industry assholes

That’s one good thing about podcasts is that it doesn’t cost money to do things like skating and snowboarding interviews so they can be put out there, which would not otherwise be available

I think the loopiest concept is losers like this get to go on podcasts and spread the word about cultural wars they spend time getting angry about. Things change, the funny thing about people like this is they pretend to be all about being free, doing what you want, and not listening to authority. Yet they spend most of their time whining about how people aren’t doing it their way, or watching qanon shit like some retard. Surfing shouldn’t be about being an asshole.
He should have listed 5 reasons why surf culture is “upside down.” He forgot to write that the world champ is scared of taking off on waves over 5 foot. That is definitely the the loopiest concept for me to understand.
There shouldn’t be a one day winner takes the world title contest because no matter where you hold it, it favors a specific handful of surfers. The point system of 10 collective contests is better for determining a true champion. If they insist on having winner takes all contest it should be the heaviest wave on tour so the next world champion isn’t a person too intimidated to charge chopes (opps, said it but many others thought it too).

BL basic problem is he assumes everyone is into pro surfing , the surf industry and consumer drivin idles such as GLopez and rolls that into his version of surf culture , well for quite a few surfers it’s actually the opposite , we have no time real time or care for the aforementioned cultural miss appropriation by the industry.
BL unfortunately will never get that.
