"Let’s review what the Poster Posse is currently bitching about."
When the great Sam George speaks, we listen. When he types, we read and marvel. The former Surfer Magazine senior editor and current The Inertia contributor, has seen more, done more, learned and forgotten more about this surf life than anyone and, thus, surf website commenters woke up this morning feeling sad.
In a scorching op-ed, Nia Peeples’ ex-husband absolutely savaged “petty, whiny, constantly complaining cry-baby” observers, declaring:
Take a quick scroll though the typical comment section on popular surfing sites (with the exception of the one you’re currently visiting, occasionally shamed for its generally positive tone) and let’s review what the Poster Posse is currently bitching about. Professional competitive surfing really takes a beating, the WSL World Championship Tour, especially, held accountable for crimes ranging from holding contests at shitty surf spots like Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Supertubes, Bells Beach, Margaret River, Teahupo’o, Punta Roca, Saquarema, Cloudbreak and Lower Trestles (all premier breaks that the average poster would have no chance of ever riding even a medium set wave), to blatant criteria inconsistencies, Filipe Toledo’s distain for big, dangerous waves, the patently unfair mid-season cut, Joe Turpel (on a purely existential level) and calling off the Pipe Masters because the waves were deemed too big and dangerous for Toledo’s fellow competitors, most of whom indicated that given the choice they’d rather not paddle out.
George includes two more long lists of surf website commenter depravity including “the great wave pool whinge,” the attack on adult learners and sponsors who drop surfers (“return on investment, uncool man,” the silver haired guru mocks) before defining the social sickness leading to such antagonisms before pointing out that things, in this surf life, are really good and generally above complaint before dropping the hammer:
A while back I wrote a feature strongly making the point that virtually every middle-aged surfer without a sponsor’s sticker on their board were riding their three-fin thrusters wrong. By the third response, however, the conversation had already degenerated beyond a discussion of surfboard design and took a sharp turn to the personal, with the angry, anonymous poster declaring that I was an eff-ing kook, pointing to my failed marriage to actress Nia Peeples, who played “Keani” in the cult favorite North Shore.

The Inertia really should be giving BG some kick back for driving a few clicks their way. Sam makes some fair points. Though so did that commenter who pointed out Sam was just complaining about the complainers. Which is something I very much like to do. Why not embrace this post irony dystopia we find ourselves in? Why not Troll the Trolls? Vitriol seems to make the internet go round. It’s a complaint fueled economy. We are a nation of Karens. Really look how much joy Chas takes trolling ELO even after Elo lost his job. That’s Peak Karen. How many Karen’s follow an employee to their next job seemingly hoping they’ll get fired there too? You can’t out Karen Chas. He truly is King of the Surf Media Karens.
One point Sam kinda missed- Now that localism’s “crowd managing in person trolling” has almost vanished from our culture, for better or often times for worse… Grumpy locals still need to vent. Comment sections clearly are a safe space for grumpy locals. Does online venting bring order to a line up? No. But leaving your contempt for the current state of things in the comment section just might make it the disintegration of surf culture a little easier to bear. Sure I love the idealized surf world I dreamt of as a kid. I still argue in favor of it, even though it’s a losing battle. Because there’s no denying that the current state of surfing also comes with an ever expanding steaming pile of BS that is increasingly hard to ignore. My biggest gripe of all about surfing is, if I’m online reading about it, or commenting about it, then I’m sure as hell not doing it, so ya I’m grumpy.

My disdain for you predates the Grit by 20 years. Your words, ideas and opinions center on your arrogant, petty, egocentric view of the world and the sport we all love. You are not the definitive voice on surfing! Also, creepy vibes to the max and I’ve never even met you.
I’ve surfed OB, Tahiti, Indo, Marshall Islands, Maldives, the Ranch as well as my everyday shitty 2 foot North County waves just like many of my Grit comrades.
In other words, this blood feud has a long history and we aren’t going anywhere.

Surf media is a joke.
It might have been novel in the 60s and 70s era – editions of Tracks were revolutionary in their approach, art and design and embrace of alternatives to 9-5 wage slavery.
As the surf wear companies hit the 80s and 90s they starting really earning some serious amounts and the earlier self awareness that the
surf media was all a bit of a giggle evaporated and surfing was infiltrated by every motherless arsehole on the make.
Tedious self absorded writers spewed mountains of pretentious garbage all over surfers.
The ultimate betrayal was advancing the corporate lie that more surfers was a good thing.
Utter drivel.
But not one writer has ever copped to essentially being a parasite.
Same for video makers – read Monty Webbers description of the Wanna Albies , the Wanna artists …..all exploiters.
BG is abrasive and without an Ad Blocker is a disaster to access but at least it challenges the laziness, the lies , the self importance of other surf media.

It’s why I moved to the far south of Japan 15 years ago. Still majority of days with a handful of people out. When I go back to Oz to see mum, holy fuck. Doesn’t help that she lives 5 mins from Snapper. Still get waves but the vibe and the aggression is different world shit.

Sam seems to suggest that the Inertia is some type of pure source, while nothing could probably be further from the truth—its writers, (and I use that term loosely), (with Haro and Cranberry being the worst), are probably some of the most two-faced, hypocritical, kiss-butt, writers, to ever put their pens to a piece of paper or hit a keyboard.
Sam George is just a talentless shill.
It’s incredible there are still outlets desperate or stupid enough to publish him.
