Surf fans, everywhere, currently deeply and profoundly hanging heads in shame, today, after two-time Lower Trestles champion Filipe Toledo’s security blanket papa Ricardo excoriated the World Surf League for running a day of competition at famed Western Australia slab “The Box.”
Two days ago, the same surf fans felt they had won a lottery when World Surf League commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer reprised her mentor Erik Logan’s iconic to-camera bit to declare, “Ok so I have a call update for tomorrow, it’s probably one people have been waiting for, we’re going to look at The Box.”
Well, competition actually ran, men rose, or fell, to the challenge(r series) and a feeling of giddy hysteria took hold, Scottish curmudgeon JP Currie even wondering if we had, in fact, entered a new golden age.
Alas, deep and profound shame, at this moment, after Ricky damned the wave as “unfit.”
His soft baby boy had already bowed out at burly Main Break with the lowest point total of the day, but that didn’t stop the senior Toledo from bringing the fire.
Taking to Instagram, Ricardo bravely declared, re. The Box, “I particularly think this wave is horrible to put on such an important event as this stage, where many have never surfed there, and have their places at stake. It’s not a question that ‘athletes of this level have to be prepared for anything’ but in a good sense and let a more ‘ripable’ surf show who should stay on the tour since they insist on this cutting shit.”

Never thought a Toledo, particularly Ricardo, would have something to say that resonated. But he’s spot on about this. The Box, sounds like a game show, was not fit for purpose on the elected day. Top surfers and up and comers were ditched out of the event by an unpredictable and mostly a garbage wave. An exhibition punt at best, and to narcissists and experienced on this ugly slab like Griff, perfect. To others a screwed up nothing.
Filipe deserves an asterisk next to his championships. The Box heat when Robinson went mental and Toledo never even paddled for a wave should have disqualified him from the CT for life.
The morning of the box has been the best bit of it.

watched the replays last nite, so I don’t have to listen to the commentary…there was one detail that really stood out…you have boxers and main breakers……Jordy’s heat after the box was by far the best surfing of the comp and entertaining to watch. Jordy made a mockery of all the othere surfers with his rail game…damn it’s sad to see the level of true power surfing spiralling down!
don’t worry dude, rail surfing will never go away – it’ll even keep geting better than anyone ever imagined – Slater improved it from Curren, JJ put it on the next level at Margarets and elsewhere and someone’s always going to pick it up and keep it going!

Ricardo is 100% right. The Box is a terrible contest wave. It’s a short intense novelty barrel but is not a good contest venue. No HamSammish.
Of all the waves in WA they hold the comp in the wrong spot.
The pro comp is only at Margaret River because they held the Aussie titles there twice, way back in 69 and 73 to stop the west Aussies complaining all the time and you really did have to go left with those boards.
Then the tour rolls around in the 80s and guess what, still going left. No jetskis and going right was a ticket to getting caught inside and losing your heat. Barton won it in huge left handers. The box was a novelty for the pros to get photos but impossible to watch from the beach Judges couldn’t see it.
Then the whole comp is basically on ice as a qs for about 20 years until the government agrees to fund it because the word “Margaret River” is linked so closely to advertising campaigns even though the town is way up the road.
They’d really get better waves as a contest spectacle holding it in the NW, like they did in that Billabong comp.
