Surfing North Korea
For $US2400, which is awfully cheap when you think about it, y'can jump on a trip to North Korea aimed at opening up the top half of that wonderful peninsula to surfers!

Amazing: North Korea Opens for Surf Tourism!

You want to cast off into the wildest of yonders? Come surf right in the dictator's lair! Ain't it just a movie waiting to happen?

Indonesia’s passé, Fiji is crowded and Hawaii, who needs the headache! If exotic is your game, how about you join a surf expedition to what is affectionately called “the hermit kingdom” or, officially, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

This September, a New Jersey-based travel company that specialises in trips to North Korea, Uri Tours, is “launching an 8-day surf camp and expedition for a chance to surf the virgin waves of North Korea.”

You like? Let’s read the press release!

“The surf expedition is led by Nik Zanella, official representative of the International Surfing Association and current coach of the Chinese National Surf Team and Andrea Lee, Uri Tours Founder and CEO. The team has been tracking waves and weather patterns along the eastern coast of North Korea for over a year. And the results are promising. ‘The pristine beaches and rocky outcrops of the Hamhung and Sijung area receive a decent amount of swells from a 90 degrees easterly window,’ according to Zanella, who has just completed a 5-year long mapping project of the entire Chinese coast. The DPRK has all of the ingredients for an excellent surf adventure, great surf bathymetry, good exposure and pristine beaches.’ But virtually nothing is known about these areas except for satellite images. ‘Our goal is to cast some light on this coastline, search for the waves, map them and, of course, surf them,’ says Zanella.

Potential? &Ldquo;Virtually Nothing Is Known About These Areas Except For Satellite Images. Our Goal Is To Cast Some Light On This Coastline, Search For The Waves, Map Them And, Of Course, Surf Them,&Rdquo; Says Expedition Leader Nik Zanella.

Want to go? I do!

“The trip is from September 13-20, 2015 and priced at US$2,400. Package includes airfare from Shanghai, DPRK visas, sightseeing and all accommodations. Deadline August 28.”

nothing ethically wrong with this. nothing … at … all.

and don’t justify it with; “oh, it helps opens up the DPRK to the world” and all that lame rhetoric

that is bullshit and typical egotistical, arrogant, imperialist/colonialist thinking (as per what set off the troubles in the region in the first place), as leading North Korean scholar Bruce Cumings would attest.

you go into DPRK as a tourist and you are complicit with and validate the regime and how it operates (and it operates with generations of families in concentration camps).

surfing IS political you morons and your actions have consequences. i would love to go as i have been scoping that coastline relentlessly for a long time now for surf.

however, i would not go at the expense of others such as the many who live and die in the concentration camps and in dire poverty and oppression because of the regime.

ffs it is not ‘just going surfing’ in situations like this. your ‘fun’ is part of a bigger ideological game.

The Indo government don’t have a great track record,America bombs the world and Aus let’s boats full of people sink of the coast and sells uranium to the world.

Not many people complain about surfing or visiting those countries so I doubt a little trip to a 3rd world hermit shell that does very little to impact on the rest of the planet is going to hurt.

Oh and BTW what we know about North Korea generally comes from them or their enimies so you’re not really going to get the truth either way.

Have a beer chill out and don’t believe everything you read.

What’s the North Korean beer like?

Ask the important questions first.

Right. Good beer can bypass human rights issues and thus provide a guilt-free surf trip.

A couple of mates went there a couple of years ago. They rated the local brew big time. Awesome place by all accounts. Don’t trust the media and drunken angels.

oh, others do bad things too so it is all OK. great. green light given. i’m going to use that logic for everything now.

perhaps it IS worth reading something about the DPRK and perhaps may provoke a rethink of being an apologist for the sake of a surf trip.

here’s a place to start: Real North Korea by Andrei Lankov

anyway, the beer is absolute rubbish.

If
someone wants to know how real North Korea life looks like they can
follow few independent journalists on facebook or other websites for
example. At least they post real photos, videos and articles about the
life there and it’s noting like the West portraits it. People
should finally understand that Western countries follow certain narrative to make you think in certain way in order to have your approval for
their actions, meaning to attack that country if they want. Wake up
people. Question what you see, don’t blindly eat what the media serves
you.

Andrei Lankov is worth following & not googling a few ‘independent’ journalists lol. the lad has been studying the DPRK (from inside and out) his whole life.

I know him. The guy who always glorifies South Korea but always writes in negative tone about North Koera. Yep, definitely non-biased “journalist”. No wonder he suits your agenda.
Now, I would appreciate if you could crawl back into your propaganda lair and have a good night sleep. Your kind is not welcome on a surfing website.

shhhh stupid one.

you haven’t a clue and obviously don’t “know him”

he is from Russia and not a journalist but a professor of international politics with a specialty in the korean peninsula. he is published both WITHIN DPRK (holy smokes!) and outside, his writing is peer-reviewed, and oxford university press published the mentioned book. he actually critiques traditional western models of the DPRK (as well as the DPRK model) and is not simply “negative in tone”.

now, back in that corner and keep the hat on.

you’re like a dolphin who types, and see what rory has to say about them here: http://beachgrit.com/2015/0…

ok we get it. North Korea is bad because the mainstream media says so. You just repeat what they say. Obviously one doesn’t have to be a genius to mindlessly believe what he is told and repeat it.
Give it a rest already because you’re making a fool of yourself.
