In Memoriam: Venice Beach 1905 – 2016

It will be missed. I think.

For over a century, Venice was home to gangsters, weirdo’s, and Z-boys. Now all that’s left is trustifarians, Hollywood trash, and wealthy geeks. It will be missed.

Venice Beach, CA – Venice Beach – a once poor, open-minded town – died last week. It was 111.

Its final deathblow was made public with the revelation that the Rooster Fish – a gay bar – would be forced shut after 37-years. It not only gave gays a place to boogie, but became a home for natives to grab a decent glass of alcohol away from the hoards taking over the community.

The neighborhood was best known for gang activity and the saying, “Keep Venice Weird.” At some point – when artists could afford to live here – this actually meant something. Now it’s the office mantra at Snapchat. Surfers came to adore the overly “localized” shitty breaks because they could claim local status after only 3-months… while riding a Wavestorm.

Locals will miss the overpriced cocktails, Gjelina pizza, and the fake meat that’s pricier than real meat. They mourn La Fiesta Bravo’s cheap burritos as they nail the coffin shut with $20 juices from Erewhon. It’s done from afar though as the already exorbitant rental market disappeared in favor of more revenue generating Airbnb’s. Longtime resident Dennis Hopper once said, “Venice was the only place in LA I could remember enjoying because all my painter and poet friends lived here.” He bought his first parcel of property in 1985 for $21 000, but passed away in 2010 before seeing his compounds worth balloon to over $6-million.

Venice was founded by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney as a beach resort town and destroyed by tech billionaire’s Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Evan Spiegel as ‘Silicon Beach.’ During it’s glory days this slum was the hangout of Beat generation poets, Jim Morrison, muscle heads like Arnie, Charles + Ray Eames, Jane’s Addiction, Hank Moody, and many other miscreants.

The death announcement was released in an eight episode series on NetFlix entitled Flaked. It made residents realize they were walking clichés and included the line, “I like this place. It’s like an on-line community, but in real life… ya know.”

The funeral service will include a memorial paddle-out lead by Rick Massie in tribute to the original art ghetto by the beach. It is survived by General Admission and www.BoardRap.com.

Our favorite Fantasy Surfer 2nd place finisher, Andrew Sayer, curates the completely delicious BoardRap. It is a wonderful collection of what is happening in the surfs and on the streets and should become a regular destination for the person who wishes to be in the know. Go! Go now!

If Venice is dead then why do all the uber hip early 30 aussies keep moving their uber hip brands there when the astronomical rents are sure to bankrupt said brands. I feel like BeachGrit is the perfect place to ask this question.

Ok, what are the remaining living towns, with decent surf, that we can move to and hopefully sneak in a couple years before they die? My current place is very much alive, but it’s freezing most of the time, and waves are much rarer than I would like.

I don’t know… but we should go find it, buy up all the real estate, and promote it as a hub for tech startups.

Why are poets so valuable to society or was that just cover for bitching that your favorite beat closed down?

I have the misfortune of working in close proximity to people who introduce themselves as poets. They’re very rich and very, very naive.

I met Jay Adams on my first OS trip. Sleeping in the Ulu warungs, which you could do for free and he would show up every day with magic mushroom shakes. Busting airs on the inside section at Racetrack.
Few years later, Thanksgiving in the rat dump Sunset Vistas at Backyards, we’d set the place on fire by forgetting about a turkey we left in the oven. We got the fire out, money had to change hands. I think someone repoed our car, a Lincoln continental mk4 to make amends.Jay busts in the door in his birthday suit dripping wet. Had swum from Velzy to Backyards escaping some assailant. Hid in the bathroom, made us roll him joints, then split before sunrise. I think that was a day in the life for him.

I remember Jay driving around in a Lincoln MK4, somehow that one must have got to him. LOL. I seen Jay getting a face tat in a hotel room across from SD convention center. He was so sweaty.

point 1: before anything, you need to realize that YOU are whats wrong with venice. the fuckin hipster/kook douchebag who moved here a few years ago and somehow already misses the ‘good ol’ days’. aka the same yuppie fuck who harps about how cool venice used to be with gangs and artists while at the same time helps pass laws restricting overnight parking for homeless people
point 2: it’s la fiesta bravA, not bravo (further reinforcing point 1)
point 3: unless you dropped General Admission sarcastically… fuck you.

If they want this website to be a success they should have a weekly article titled “CAVEIRA’S CORNER: #INSERT TOPIC!” He is one of the few guys who really tells the truth about professional surfing.

Ding ding ding! I’m so excited to see this blood feud rage on through 2016. I’ve got some fucking work to do today though. Yet another STAB employee has registered a Disqus account to try and take me down a peg. I don’t want to end up like Jimbo Pelligrine but I’m at the end of my tether with these dorks.

Is La Cabana still open? If so, Venice may be on life support, but lives on.

not only la cabana, but its sister/cousin across the intersection, casablanca is still in full effect. both spots cranking out hand-made tortillas, killer margaritas, and you can still smoke on the patio at la cabana.

don’t know who this kid is who wrote this but he’s way too young to claim any knowledge of the bad old good old days. not to mention that these stories get written every day about every neighborhood in the country, from The Mission in SF to Bed-Stuy in NY. beachgrit, be more interesting!

Now, I’m usually pretty easy on Beach Grit writers, but there are more incorrect apostrophes in this piece than I can count. Not really, there are at least 4 that I noticed on my quick read. There are rules for hyphens too.

On Venice, well, nobody gives a shit about Venice. Have they ever? In fact, I’d much prefer to see Silicon Beach take hold in Venice than a real surf town. That this article is written by a guy from Toronto or someplace like that is, well, ironic.

Nice advertisement for another’s boring (and poorly designed) website. Probably the single worst thing I’ve read on Beach Grit (including Rory’s Dane photographer at Sandspit advertisement!).
