"There's 40 guys in the lineup and everyone is upset and agro and angry and they want to get waves!"
Is there just no stopping the lust, the horny for Kelly Slater and his new wave pool? First Lemoore, then Melbourne, then San Diego and now Oahu? Birthplace of surfing? Wow! (Is Oahu the birthplace of surfing? If no, which island? The island of Peru?)
As first reported by Hawaii News Now:
A development group is planning to build a surf resort on Oahu. That in itself isn’t earth-shattering news. The fact that it won’t feature any of Hawaii’s fabled surf breaks is.
“The whole concept is to be able to share waves. It’s tough to rely on the ocean for consistency as all surfers know–but if you can create waves, you’ve got more waves to go around and more waves to share” said Tyler Greene, Managing Partner for Surf City Hui LLC. Greene explains the thinking behind “The Endless Summer Resort”, which will be built around an artificial wave pool.
“We probably get those special days maybe 5-7 days a season. And then when you do get them there’s 40 guys in the lineup and everyone is upset and agro and angry and they want to get waves” said Greene.
Greene and his partners are currently looking at three sites on Oahu–focusing on the leeward side. They also have a site in mind on the Big Island. The resort will feature approximately 250 rooms.
The company hopes to feature Kelly Slater’s wave pool design.
“It’s a safe and friendly environment, all the way from a mush, knee high wave for a beginning long boarded to head high barrel for a more experienced surfer.”
Is it a good idea? Should they add a shark tub too? Will a group of locals rise up and smash mainland kooks? Will our Rory Parker go and take his wife? Will she like it or prefer the ocean?
So many questions!

never trust a Chad
I feel bad for all you guys in hawaii only getting those “5-7 special days”. You guys will never learn to surf properly without a wave pool.
Nat not so Young on the left.
The Surfstich founders.
“The Endless Summer Resort” – no other commented needed…
Wonder if Graham S has some stake in this. Eddie, ya hear me?
I’m not sure which is Tyler and which is Chad, but they certainly do both look like a “Tyler” and a “Chad.”
As a rule of thumb, Chad’s usually have a more toothy smile than Tyler’s.
Seems like a great site for wave pool with brown-greenish water.
Oh wait, that was Tyler Greene’s Coco Palms Hui idea
Nanakuli? Seriously? My local friend (who is black, by the way) won’t set foot in Nanakuli so I don’t see that as a safe/smart move. Unless they are selling the true Moke experience in which case…Alohamahalo!
Spent a month there, it’s really not that bad
I tried tried to avoid that side of the island except for one trip to Barber’s Point for a running race so my personal experience is limited. To be fair…I saw two guys get into a fight right near the Kahala Mall so idiots can be anywhere.
My first reaction is ‘why do this in the Mecca of surfing? They should be building these in Kansas City and Chicago for people who have never surfed.’ But their rational makes some sense. By labeling it ‘safe’ ‘mellow’ ‘friendly’ you can snag a group of people who have already dropped serious coin to go to Hawaii, but are afraid to mix it up with locals or surf waves of consequence or just get skunked.
Real talk though one in Vegas open 24/7 would be amazing.
I would move to Vegas for the 24 hr one and try to get a job.
the tourists would have better luck letting Waikiki rollers hit em in the ass and try to struggle to their feet. they won’t make a single drop in a two hour session in the pool.
But what if they have a ‘knee-high mush burger’ setting?
that would be pretty authentic, maybe turn it up to the Kewalo’s setting after a bit
Still beats hitting that damn reef or cutting your hands on the paddle out before you realize that the water is shin deep.
Rory won’t care as long as they don’t offer vacation rentals.
Or come anywhere near him.
Nah, they were talking about this a few years back. It’ll never happen. Electricity on Oahu costs more than twice what it does in California. Absolutely impossible to turn a profit off running the thing.
This is just building hype to help get permits.
