I reported that the World Surf League was running a mini-comp at Wave Ranch on Sunday and I was wrong. It is today! Singlets in the pool! The World Surf League released an instagram clip showing Kelly Slater himself, in the Jeep Leaderboard Yellow Jersey bobbing and weaving and looking to be having very much fun.
I’ll admit sadness at not being there to witness live but happiness that it is actually happening.

thing that made me laugh tho was hearing the announcer’s voice over the PA system on one of those clips. did anyone in attendance in lemoore really need the surfers to be identified and their manuevers described?
How the fuck did they hand out a 9.8 on the first day of competition at this joint?
Do they really think that an alley oop is that close to perfection? That leaves 0.2 points for all future progression at this wave.
This is the first break where changes in conditions won’t be a factor and the sliding scale can’t be applied and they throw out a fucking 9.8!

This wave is like the “highly realistic sex robots” of surfing. Gorgeous and “perfect,” but clearly robotic.
Of course, I’d definitely hit it, at least a few times, but I wouldn’t want to marry it.
Pools like this may actually be good for surfing. I bet more people would pay money to surf in a perfect, controlled environment than to cope with the radical uncertainties & natural randomness of “the beach.” More waves for the rest of us.
