The next event on the World Surf League calendar is the very exciting Corona Bali Pro which kicks off in just four short days. Or I mean was the Corona Bali Pro which has officially changed its name to the Corona Bali Protected in order to bring awareness to plastic pollution in our oceans. Press release time!

Totally great, right? So why was my reaction after reading this earth friendly news to chortle? If you were sitting next to me I would have chortled then elbowed you in the shoulder all like “can you believe this silliness, bro?”
What’s my problem? Corona and the World Surf League are doing something good by bringing awareness and practical steps in order to reduce the poison of plastics. They together are trying to be part of the solution but here I am mocking them for it. Is it because I came of age in the 1990s when trying to do anything at all was seen as patently uncool? Generation X. Slacker etc. I’m a loser, baby, so why don’t you kill me etc.
Does that explain my rude spirit or am I just a run-of-the-mill asshole?

Well, for once I’m not going to knock wsl or anybody that’s raising awareness for this issue.
It’s a massive problem in some places. It needs attention and needs fixing.
You’re all correct – a few surfers bleating and picking up plastic ain’t going to do shit.
But it’s a start.
It needs Governments to get involved to come up with a way to put in place systems that work for them to deal with this. Education and commitment from local communities.
Here’s one for kiwis and aussies – our recyclable plastics were being shipped back to China and dealt with there. Now they’re not, I have yet to see a comprehensive plan announced from either country of how they will be dealt with now China isn’t taking them.
Germany made it the responsibility of the producers of packaging to ensure it is returned then reused or recycled. 10c for glass bottles and 25c (!!) for big plastic bottles. You see them fucking nowhere. 5c on plastic bottles and you wouldn’t see them anywhere in Bali. 2.5c even. Will it fix everything? Nope. Will it make a massive fuckin change. Totally.
Seriously. If Corona put up $100k to pay people 2c/plastic bottle, that would be a great start.

My wifes from Germany and she’s always told me about this being a practical way of approaching the problem.
But it’s how to get the message through to those countries who have zero political will to do anything. Most of them don’t even recognise they have a problem.
So it’s right up there at Government level – where the recognition for the need to do something has to occur.
West Sumbawa had many people collecting plastic bottles, trouble is there is no incentive to pick up any of the other shit. Even the hotels burn the rubbish on the beach directly in front of the resort but not an inch further..
