It is the giving season, the most wonderful time of the year, when friends help friends and friends help strangers and… ohh who am I kidding? It is a vicious time, a terrible time where Ayn Rand’s ethos reigns supreme. Gimme gimme gimme and have you ever read The Fountainhead? What about The Virtue of Selfishness? Are you a fan? None of it matters. The recent California fires have devastated communities and left thousands without homes. The tragedy is too large to know where to begin but the stories of people helping one another are inspirational. It’s hard to know how to help when so much help is needed. The best way we know how is raise some money by auctioning off a custom surfboard and donate it to the Red Cross. The Red Cross are always on the front lines of every disaster and we would like to help their efforts in providing shelter for those who have nowhere to go. This just reminded me of all the douches in college who kept trying to sell the merits of Objectivism as an ethical framework and get people to read any Rand (like they were working on commission)… usually these kids were already winners of the lottery of birth who had never worked an honest day’s job… but that’s neither here nor there…

A couple thoughts:
– it strikes me as odd to raffle a Ghost model to benefit families that may have lost loved ones.
– after the Red Cross $500M, but we built six houses, and yes we have no idea where most of the money went debacle in Haiti, it’s hard to muster any semblence if confidence that the Red Cross will best serve the needs of families/people affected by the fires.

When I think of selfishness , I am forced to think of the Marquis de Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom ( discussed by Camus in his work L’Homme Révolte ) where the all powerful selfish hero of the novel finds himself all alone with no one left to torture but himself .
Would love to be going like a mad cunt on the ghost but donate what little money I have to homeless people in Kiel who sell a magazine concerning their plight called Hempels .
