I’m relatively indifferent, though certainly appreciate it as both art form and very difficult pastime.
It seems, though, that many in surf wish that our culture reflected skate with is seemingly devil-may-care ‘tude and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
With this in mind let us watch a man named Dustin Dollin talk about his first trip to America as a 14 year-old boy. The podcast is called The Nine Club Club and is very popular amongst skaters.
We’ll drop in after a long segue about Dustin growing up in Australia in a safehouse for shotgun totting bank robbers with a step-dad who had claws for hands. The thing I really love about skateboarders is their determination when learning tricks like ollies and kick flips. Over and over again and not landing it. Hours upon hours. Days upon days. Right in front of the house. click click click.. clank clank.. almost landed it.

I listen to The Bunt skate podcast and can verify that skaters are def more rock ‘n roll. For surfers the boardshorts are only getting shorter and more pastel. Anybody up for an acai bowl fight??!!
On a related note: skateboarders can also do feature films much MUCH better than surfers. Mid90s has by far the least cheesy representation of any hobby ever put to film, perhaps. It ain’t perfect by any means, but there’s no rhapsodic references to big waves or ollie kickflip 900s. Thanks Jonah Hill!
I can’t imagine it’s better than Thrashin’ or Gleaming the Cube, which were basically lightly stylized real life documentaries as far as my 10 year old brain could tell.

Skaters can traverse a city using their ‘sport’, introducing a variety of interesting locations and human interactions which the non-skating public can mostly engage with.
Surfers are somewhat limited to particular places off the beach, and avoid interaction if at all possible. To the non-surfing public, pretty much all waves being surfed look alike.

dunstin is fun. boulala is fun. arto saari is less fun but was amazing and now takes pretty pictures, sometimes of surf. skating has just as much shit on it as surfing, but the industry is smaller so the cooler stuff floats to the top more easily.

Is the skate industry really smaller than surf? I’d have guessed the opposite – so many skaters – but then again surf gear is more expensive and people buy a lot of it ….
