Three wavepools side-by-side in the Californian desert. A miracle of human ingenuity and ability to triumph over the natural world, yes?
Who would’ve thought that one day a wavepool war would erupt in a fashionable resort town with more same sex couples than any other community in the USA and the largest concentration of modernist architecture in the world, one hundred miles inland from Los Angeles?
And the kicker is the joint don’t got water?
Heady days.
In January last year, it was reported, here, that the Maui surfer Cheyne Magnusson, who has hair like a spitfire and singlehandedly altered the course of aerial surfing at BSR cable park in Waco, had been signed to design and set-up a pool at the old Wet ‘n’ Wild site in Palm Springs, California.
Six month later, the terrifying ménage à trois of Clifton and Damien Hobgood and Josh Kerr simultaneously announced they’d been signed up to sell a new wave tank which is being installed at the Desert Willow Golf Resort, also in Palm Springs.
Two hotels and between 40 and 88 villas, which you can buy, as well as a Wavegarden Cove, and all under the handle DSRT Surf.
Today, y’heard about Kelly Slater’s proposed joint, a two-hundred million dollar development with a hotel and a six-hundred homes and, according to the LA Times, “In addition to the 18-million-gallon surf basin, the features might include a network of ponds that hotel guests and residents could navigate on stand-up slow-moving paddle boards or decidedly faster electric hydrofoil boards that lift riders out of the water.”
Can all three pools survive?
Unlikely.
Wanna take some bets?
Peer into the future. It’s 2030.
Who still stands?
Who wins?

Hey Colonel, remember this conversation where ran your mouth about wave pools in Palm Springs and how we’re all a bunch of cool guy know-it-all’s here? Tronald-1, Colonel-0
There’s a lot of people with a lot of money in L.A., a lot of them love surfing and would pay a lot of money to be able to surf on the weekends with out weekend crowds. Plus there’s a lot of rich surfers pushing into their 70’s who would love to surf somewhere with out a million kids paddling around them.
yawn…
What did you do to get boned by schwab?
Don’t you think people can change a bit?
Perhaps mature into different psychologies?
sshhh. back in your box.

If the Chinese follow surfing like basketball, all of them will do well.
Follow the money.
Surprisingly, water isn’t a big issue in the Coachella Valley. Huge aquifer under the whole joint from millions of years of melting snowpack. Golf courses for days out there.
Strong push to change that tho. Supposed to be a shared resource etc, but all about how deep can you drill a well. Overdrafting is a big issue in the ag zones, sinking land, dry wells. Lawsuits for days. Salinas valley been overdrafting for years, looks like a lush garden up there. Kinda mind blowing.
I did see this – A (study by USGS) found that as groundwater pumping has led to declines in portions of
the aquifer, the ground sank from between 9 inches to 2 feet from 1995
to 2010 in parts of Indian Wells, La Quinta and Palm Desert. That has
caused damage in other parts of the Coachella Valley over the years, cracking the
foundations of some homes and damaging swimming pools, roads and other
infrastructure.

My sources tell me that one of them may be closer to roll-out than we think. Hint: it ain’t Kelly’s
CJ Hobgood, the guy with the world title that no one respects, not even a little bit, is trying to throw shade on the GOAT to give his own venture some added attention. oh yeah, I can see how this plays out… chapter 11.
cj > kelly. cj loves “god” kelly thinks he is “god”
His mum and I respect it.
I really don’t know what to say. Sellouts – anything for a buck. Kelly’s environmental position just had a huge, great white size shark bite of credibility taken out.
I agree with some of these points. However there are a lot more surfers with a lot more money than ever. A lot of this is due to VAL’s embracing the sport and they aren’t looking for the type of surf we are. It’s a different era now. BSR is consistently sold out – and it’s not that expensive.
While wave tanks in the desert is laughable, at lest it keeps these people out of the ocean.
I mean… for fuck’s sake.
Have you ever seen a bigger waste of a coastline?
Just start blasting. Shovel that rock into the sea for Ma Nature and her five storms to sort out into amazing spots. Get the slope on land no steeper that 1:10 with terraces for housing etc,
You could leave a few bits up high for spotting / anti-shark artillery. I reckon
Get behind this!

You fucking stupid cunts
You’re excited aren’t you!!! Me too!!!
It’s gonna be off the charts.
Where’s Damo Cole?!?!?
We need his focus.
So that’s why they call it the bite.
I like your new Conservative outlook.
Look. The thing about great architecture etc. is that it doesn’t matter about what the eventual outcome is, as long as the drawings and presentation media are top notch.
I intend to make a project out of this now and will sell it to the world.
Liberal / Labour / Greens. They’ll all lap it up because of my incredible crayon pictures.
Don’t forget
One Nation
Did BG get credit in that Insta post for headline?
It’s coming in the mail.
A rubiks cube
Only 4 squares
Designed for surfers.
”About 25 people could surf at a time, with five or so riding the main wave and 10 surfers on each of the two end bays of the basin, where the waves would be smaller”
Kelly is the ultimate grumpy local you only have to share the main wave with 5 people and the rest of the kooks are shoved down the basin as they should be.
All the houses are on the train, see?
They constantly move during the day using domestic-scale (sub-sized) nuclear gennies.
The mass of the houses helps push / pull a series of ploughs through a linked series of ‘lagoons’ around which the choo-choo done go.
Over and over, round and round. Ten, twenty, a hundred ploughs shuffling and snuffling. Throwing up novelty waves in dozens of aquamarine coves frequented by hundreds of scowling over-privileged youth.
Their mums and dads, thousands of miles away in luxury resorts in the Pacific, guarded by Chinese warships.
I’m sure they’ve kept a real keen eye on the opposition and have got and or had all sorts of prototypes in some oversized fish tank in an Industrial warehouse.
Who knows, but I’m excited to see how this next version rolls out.
It sounded in presser that Kelly revisiting older tech – colab with weber the circular one???? would make sense in a resort because then the tourists and residents can float round in circle and double as kayaking pool for the Olympics in 2050
When is someone gonna build an 8 foot slab instead of all these perfect 2-3 footers, liability, liability I hear you shout, put heavy foam pads on the “reef” & let’s dance muthaf@%#ers!!
all of them will prosper!
