Wow!
Now, I’ve been on a rumor heater of late dishing up one truth about our professional surfing after another before those truths are “official.” Secrets that I share with you, only you, much to our World Surf League’s chagrin.
Often they paint Santa Monica in a… less-than-flattering light. Much bumbling etc. Missteps and a clear lack of leadership running all the way to the tippy-top but today’s rumor could buoy the League’s few remaining workers.
It should provide hope.
For I have heard from someone who knows someone who knows who won the soon-to-air reality series “Ultimate Surfer” and, apparently, the whole thing is so wonderfully enjoyable that it will save professional surfing as we know it.
Difficult to believe?
Yes.
The show was shot at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch, as you know, a place so void of intrigue as to be suicidally dull (unless Kelly Slater’s guru and spiritual advisor Charlie Goldsmith is present and/or Kelly Slater’s Chinese girlfriend) and early leaked potential invitees (Zeke Lau, Seabass Zietz) did not arouse.
But my source is… good. Good enough, at least, and this is BeachGrit where anti-depressiveness reigns supreme.
Do you doubt?

Yeah, I had a vocation and wasn’t begging to be lowly paid and edited to death so I was only so motivated.
Not what I expected VONR and that’s what makes this fun. I have a very different take that leads to a similar conclusion.
I had a robust traditional market that I could tap, but they’ve all gone belly up including the growers except for one Avo grower, but his flower is B-. I patronize the store because I now have to…. which was the corporate plan and also unaddressed by the show.
But you bring up a great point about outdoor, one the show missed entirely. They also lament the poor laboratory commercial guys spin on his own future best interest. In that case, they missed every point.
Wish we could discuss off air… I think I blew my brother in Law in Chicago’s mind after he asked me to watch the show. He understood immediately the business angles and what the attractive “reporter” never followed up on.

I met Pezzy in the jungle, long time ago with Flippy, Walter and Creed. I got on with Flip and Creed who like Hippy trails… pitched it to Pez who deferred to Hulett back home. Said he loved the concept. Scott said something about being too busy and put it on the shelf to look at later and kept publishing garbage about unknown long boarders with fuzzy photos. I gave up, but would see Flip often and he’d always say I should knock louder on the door. He was like that. Legend and he knew it. Walt was business first and Creed was the legend. It was like dining/drinking in a SJ mag.

I will remain optimistic on this one purely because I knew a guy who new a guy who sold me a really good used tinny. it shit itself in the first month. I learned a great deal about outboard engines in the following months. clouds and silver linings, polished turds etc etc
