An extravaganza of nature.

Just in: Watch as Elephant Seal protects fur seal colony from marauding Great White shark!

Battle of the heavyweights.

A three-ton elephant seal has been filmed chasing a Great White shark away from the easy kill of baby seals on Robberg Peninsula in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.

The elephant seal, named Solo, is a popular attraction for tourist operators in Plett, looking adorable as he sleeps on the mountain or frolicking in the Cape’s cold water, his snout fixed into a permanent grin.

Here, the White gets real close to seizing a bebe before daddy swings in.

Two things you’ll take away from the vision, below.

One, that the Great White is, mostly, an opportunistic predator and is averse to anything that might give it hell (buy Biteback stainless steel spikes here, designed to stab apex predators where it hurts) and, two, clear water, Plettenberg Bay, mmmm, that name and that colour water sure do ring a bell.

Yeah, four months ago, the same drone pilot that snatched this footage, fourteen-year-old  Luka Oosthuizen, generated a thousand headlines when he filmed a twelve-foot White swimming through a group of surfers during a clear-water middle of the day sesh fifty feet or so from the beach.

Even crazier thing was, the day after “a whirlwind of interviews from all over the world”, the kid took his bird up in the sky and filmed another White swimming through surfers.

Good times.

I’m still not sure whether I’m supposed to feel bad about the time a bunch of us little shits started throwing cane toads into traffic along Kaneohe Bay Drive when I was 5.

I’m gonna retroactively claim eco-warrior status when Jebus asks me.

Nature being nature. Not a human in sight.

All humans are bastards… except for me. (So the expression goes.)

Hmmm is this a solution? Might be a new employment opportunity – Elephant Seal Officer – a force could be installed at popular beaches worldwide to protect beachgoers from marauding sharks. Each unit is allocated a large Elephant Seal, a rowboat and a drone along with a cool uniform plus training paraphernalia including but not limited to – a large guiding pole, a bucket of fish and some pictures of vicious sharks attacking baby elephant seals.

Similar physique to most mall cops as well.

Mall cops might be better suited to an aquatic environment to realise their full potential.

The feeling of weightlessness would be liberating. Speeding along at four miles an hour with no effort at all.

Perfect. I’d like to see that sense of superiority transferred to an ‘aquatic environment’ and see how it works with marauding juvenile Great Whites. They’ve been training their whole lives for it.

Imagine them all suiting up, chest bumping, high fiving and bum patting getting psyched for their big chance.

We don’t really have mall cops in Australia. The closest thing would be bouncers. Went to school with a guy who was big, but not quite in the same league as the really tough guys. The next time I saw him was at a nightclub where he was a bouncer. Saw him hitting a patron, who was restrained by 3 other bouncers, with kind of girly over hand punches. Pretty much summed him up…

Yeh bouncer would be closest. With our Shopping Centre security guards, they are usually recent immigrants just looking for any job they can get. With Mall Cop I was imagining Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I once got attacked by an Indian bouncer here in Melbourne he didn’t really hit me much but he smashed all the beer glasses I had collected over the course of the evening – non-tourists are not really welcome at Transport.

In America they are the kids that didn’t go out to to play in the school yard for fear of ridicule and bullying, only to get their revenge later in life by having a radio and uniform patrolling the shopping malls and wishing they could get into the police academy. Kid with AR-15 in Kenosha is a good example.

Yes I saw that guy, I think they call him Fatty AR-15. I saw some earlier footage of him running up and punching a girl in the back of the head too while wearing ‘merican flag crocs. No self control. Bad eggfarts those gun-toting conservative religious wannabe hero types.

Luckily security guards in malls only get to carry radios. They probably get off work and listen to their police frequency scanners all night, and watch Iraq war footage on YouTube

I’ve started writing D&D adventures for the kids while drinking Wild Turkey at night. Maybe I could become a Mall Cop.

That’s far too crazy a lifestyle. Maybe dressing up to do civil war reenactments on the weekends or playing dungeons and dragons.

A delightful and useful beast, like the oxen of yore.

Delightful certainly! I imagine, like oxen, they might be yoked in twos at beaches plagued by particularly large aquatic specimens.

I’ll give you my mother-in-law’s resume. Not the strongest swimmer but she fits the criteria pretty well otherwise.

If she’s capable of frightening large sharks away from beachgoers, she’s qualified. We can tie a buoy to her waist and kit her out with a snorkel. It’ll take time to breed up our preferred bull Elephant Seals and distribute to beaches. Let’s get her on a contract to cover this summer through to Easter.
