A full day of hot cold action!
Professional surfing has been left in tatters, its Waterloo the brave town of Lennox Head, Australia where locals rose as one and scratched and clawed and issued multiple swears, sending the World Surf League torn and bloodied back to Santa Monica, maybe all the way to the gates of hell.
A victory for the ages but maybe pyrrhic? Maybe we cheer today but weep tomorrow when their is no more professional surfing to entertain us?
Well don’t worry! The world’s greatest snowboarder Travis Rice has envisioned a whole new tour, the first stop is Jackson Hole, Wyoming and day one has received the green light.
It’s all simple to understand, with no overlapping heats or priority squabbles.
24 (16 men, 8 women) of the very best, hand-selected, snowboarders will hit the course, blending big mountain riding with enhanced features, today at 9:30 mountain time. Three heats of eight (8 men, 8 women, 8 men, repeat). The top 12 will advance to day 2, which will occur sometime between now and Feb. 9.
Judges will be looking at creativity, difficulty, general coolness, etc. All things we surfers will be able to comprehend easily and snarkily weigh in on like we know.
We are very good at appropriation.

XGames is for sale, and losing it’s appeal because 1800’s are so unrelateable (hard to wrap your head around when they’re shown in slow motion). Nice to see a legitimate contest on fun terrain with tricks that you don’t need to strain to understand.

Nice of the judges to push Travis through to the next round. They wouldn’t be getting paid today with out him. It’s the way contests should be run, just like the WSL, crowd favorites should win if it’s a close call. How about Pat Moore’s last run, good stuff!

Nice to see Travis Rice taking a play out of Kelly Slater’s playbook, creating a contest sight then entering the contest. Surprised Jake Blauvelt didn’t get an invite? Did Travis think he’d be too hard to beat? Good contest regardless. I like the WSL tournament style format. All we need now is a Jackson Hole locals uprising against the contest and the whole thing will be complete.
T.Rice totally over scored on his second run and his no name competitor was definitely underscored. Great entertainment! Feels like the plot of Hot Dog the movie, with way better contest terrain. Love it.
Chris Rasman is a no name competitor? You obviously know nothing about big mountain snowboarding. I do agree T Rice lost his heat. But Rasman is a amazing big mountain snowboarder.
No shit Rasman is an amazing big mountain rider, he beat Travis Rice in their heat. But ya, I’ve never watched the Manboys vids. Maybe I will now. The internet is flooded with so many shit snowboard clips, I generally don’t have the patience or desire to try and find good ones anymore. I miss the days when there were gate keepers to what content the masses crossed paths with.

I rewatched there heats last night, after replying. Actually I think T Rice won, he definitely won heats 2 and 3. I actually like that we have don’t have gate keepers anymore, a lot more shitty clips, but we the boarders have more control over where the industry goes. Back in the day, snowboarders were the gate keepers, now a days it would be Corporate Kooks.

I did, as a 9yr old I got Solid Gold Hits Volume 17 (yes I still have it) for my mother’s birthday because it had some songs on it I liked, eg ‘Black Betty’ by Ramjam and ‘Jetairliner’ by Steve Miller (plus others).

Plenty credit to the riders as they are hucking it off what’s there. That said, watching feels a bit like a big wave contest where the waves are only 10-15′. Maybe the name “Natural Selection” gave me the impression that they would be throwing it off cliffs and such as opposed to man-made hits (even though they are big hits). Not sure why, but just not overly impressed with the thing as a whole (not the riders skills).

All said, the WSL could learn a ton from Red Bull. 10 minutes in it was obvious they put in the time to get the bio’s of athletes recorded with some thought.
the drone view screwed the whole magnitud of the jumps(sorry FEATURES wtf..) .I guess the long range perspective was hard to deal with having bad visibility .
I dont think the hosts were much better than the wsl crew which makes me think there’s no hope for it.

Is surfing the only sport still off because of Covid? Everything seems to be back. MMA, NBA, NFL, various football leagues where they all hug, kiss, lick each others foreheads every time there is a goal, etc.
WSL is too woke to be competing…. rumor has it they will stop keeping score, and everyone gets a participation trophy. jaddy andre’s underrated back hand finally gonna get the recognition it deserves!
