Ain’t a beach in the continental US that thrills me as much as Silver Strand, a mile-long hit of sand with waves powered by an open water trench, two hours north of the city of Angels.
One road in, one road out.
Sand on the curbless streets.
A real Hossegor vibe.
Peopled by the sort of locals that don’t take real kindly to strangers, howevs.
Solo, maybe y’cool, but not in packs, and not the sorta packs there to shoot videos.
Punchy waves and punchy locals.
Fighting might be fun as hell, but it has its drawbacks.
Cops, litigation, prison etc.
And, so, locals have taken to organised fights to solve their surf beefs.

Pro surfing should adopt mid heat fights like hockey. It would have to have some rules that don’t make any sense like only allowing open handed slaps across the face.
Also strand has not been localized since the whole Carter Slade thing 20+ years ago.

I’d like to say it was when Dane with the early Marine layer vid’s and then Nick Rosa around the same time with his stint with Reef. After that it was common to hear French and Portuguese in the lineup. Also the Dreaded LA guys looking for waves. OOOh cant forget Ben Stiller is a mega local if we can remember the classic Fair Bits.
Yeah I started surfing there around 2001 and spent a lot of time out there between 2002-2008. Two older dudes I grew up with told me it got easier after the Carter Slade thing but I don’t have first hand experience.
I never really felt the need to give sets away though like I do at some places further north or in Hawaii. Never got burned on the good ones that came my way, either. The only time I ever got anything close to being vibed is when a guy filming on the beach asked me if I saw any sharks, which was more of a joke than an attempt to intimidate.
I noticed a bunch of Brazilian guys moved to California around 2006-2009ish. Saw them a lot at Lowers back then. I never really got to know them so I didn’t know their deal, but they knew how to surf so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were driving up there when it was good.
Interesting method to throw out his name when you didn’t know him, never surfed with him, and didn’t start surfing the place until after he was gone. It was pretty much done as a localized spot by 2001 anyway.
It was covered in the LA Times but point taken. I’ll avoid mentioning him specifically in the future.

I wouldn’t want to be defined or known by my own worst moments. This happened over 20 years ago and he’s avoided trouble since.
Edit: I’ll still talk about the incident if it’s relevant but just not mention his name. He’s not really a public figure so it doesn’t change the story by not including it.
Goes back earlier than that. There was a pro living and filming there in the mid 90’s who really blew the place up before social media. Shares initial with a legend of the sport.
