Worrying trend. Or is it?
Twenty-two packages totaling forty-four kilograms of marijuana were seized, yesterday, on the island paradise of Bali. The operation was led by Bali’s National Narcotics Agency and began after “the police arrested a couple with initials C (aged 32) and his wife initial P (aged 40) who were previously fugitives for a similar case. During the interrogation, the information led the police to an attempt to smuggle a huge amount of marijuana from Medan, North Sumatra to Bali.”
The officer in charge, Brigjen Gede Sugianyar Dwi Putra, said it was the largest haul of his career though expected even bigger busts in the near future as “many people, especially those who have been relying on the tourism sector such as musicians, artists, surf coaches and even tattoo artists” are entering the illicit marijuana trade at a record clip due Covid-19’s devastating effect on the economy.
Surf coaches returning to Sea of Darkness roots, going back to early 1970s glory before there was even such thing as a “surf coach.
The Oblowitz masterpiece begins with the Bob Dylan quote “To live outside of the law you must be honest.
Who do you think is more honest, illicit marijuana dealing or surf coaching?
When I directed my own masterpiece, Who is JOB, I began with a Hemingway quote. Something about man wrestling the forces of nature.
Hemingway never said or wrote it.
Deep fake.
While you’re here, though, does anyone know a married couple, older wife younger husband, with the initials C and P?
Christian and…. ?
Chris and…. ?
The winners in all this are those that still just go surfing and don’t harp on nor care about what it was or is.
like Bob in g-land and me at a undisclosed 1 in 100 year flooded river bar the other day.
Third Sheep Dip?
C_____ and P______?
That’s easy!
Chas and Pauline (Menczer)
They’re secretly married.
It was the freckles what done it.
Congratulations, You’ll have that to write on your gravestone now. Along with I sorta knew cool people.
Boards with a hemp laminate. Parabolic stringers to maintain shape. Core of vacuum sealed bud. Patent pending.
What a ridiculous venture, 44 kilo’s of Sumatran weed might get about a dozen people stoned.
Fuck, he’s such an initial dropper!
On another note, for those of us who bever got to view Sea of Darkness… is it humanly possible to see this film? Will it ever be again?
https://www.youtube.com/wat…
Fuck yeah! Legend
Why aren’t I surprised by this!
I got a copy kicking about that I can share if needed.
Extra points if you can name the respected surf brand founded with money from something fiberglassed inside of longboards and driven up from down south, hiding in plain sight.
Kind of, but the details are a bit rubbery , I think they relocated to somewhere in Nepal
That’s a pretty long list…
You go from being a professional surfer or surfboard shaper thinking you’ve got life by the balls then, realization. “I have a family and a multi million dollar house that I need to support & I’ve never learned any life skills because everybody told me I was cool, I can’t feed my Ill behaving kids with cool?” So you start growing a little weed. Well not you but that one guy who you don’t respect but has always been loyal and knows the vicious underbelly your sponsorships helped you avoid .Until you don’t need that guy anymore, you’ve got this, but you let the guy hang around until you make your operation big enough to start rubbing others out. Death threats fly, you realize it wasn’t worth it but now you have enough money. If bullshit catches up you just blame that loyal kid.
Hi Balls
Medan has some damn fine sticks n seeds.
Traditionally used in food up that way if I’m not wrong.
From the islands out near Pulau weh it’s mostly just grown with government protection to sell to silly tourists.
Yeah, Aceh area it has been used for centuries before 1920, after that classified the same as herion. Good cash for the polisi, cant even imagine how much they must have taken from bules over the years.
The illicit weed industry is much more honest than anything to do with surfing.
The (so-called) surf industry is dominated by bitchy fuckwits out to take as much as they can get and big-note themselves in the process.
Always has been like that, and no doubt always will be…
It’s funny you mention it, I was just trialling a new wave pool technology in M____ with K___ S___ and T___ S___ when A____ A___ came up to me and said M____ C____ and H____ H____ were down in the lobby with a couple of old issues of S____ that I edited and were hoping to get an autograph. So I went down to see them with my good buddy L____ D____ and next thing you know we were all back in the hotel room ____ _____ with a _____ and I eventually had to call an ambulance to have it removed.
You should see the emails I get from Ben. So fucking embarrassing to read.
He has no shame in putting the greying hairy old balls of industry ex-heavyweights in his mouth in an pathetic attempt to feign friendship.
You should post them.
Those emails are sent out of the spirit of aloha.
We know you haven’t been able to leave Kaikoura since the earthquake, so that was done in a spirit of hands across the sea, to give some Klueless Kiwi insight into this “surf industry” thing you rag on and obsesses about.
A surf industry that no longer exists by the way.
The people in those emails are the founders of the modern surf industry. They got in when it was good, made bank and then got out when it was all falling to merde.
Smart guys.
You were surrounded by the founders on the modern surf industry in the glory days of making bank, yet here you are telling us losers about crossword puzzles while your “friends” sit in their nice cars and houses.
You missed multiple chances and opportunities to join them and take your share of the pie. So here you are, BeachGrit is your purgatory. We are your peers and contemporaries now Ben.
It’s funny you mention it, I was just trialling a new wave pool technology in Maroubra with Kevin Spacey and Tom Selleck/Telly Savalas/Tom Servais when Amy Adams (babe!) came up to me and said M C Hammer and Howard Hughes were down in the lobby with a couple of old issues of Spy that I edited and were hoping to get an autograph.
So I went down to see them with my good buddy Larry David and next thing you know we were all back in the hotel room playing Scrabble with a thesaurus and I eventually had to call an ambulance to have it removed.
Unfortunately some poor Indonesian kid will be going to the slammer for life at the expense of some Covid escaping, trust-fund, isnta influencer, yoga life coach getting his weed.
bingo
And also its crap weed up that way as a general rule.
I watched The Searchers last night. The guy who made Lawrence of Arabia studied The Searchers to figure out how to shoot landscapes.
Watching The Searchers now, there are a lot of similarities between the two.
Right down to the same suicidal revenge charge by the cowboy on the Comanche, and Talal on the Turks.
Chas knows what I’m talking about, even if you dont.
David Lean.
Gotta keep an eye on those English teachers too. I bought most of my goods in Bali from a Seppo English teacher. That was until we headed east and needed a much larger amount of hash to last a month. At that point we turned to the Kiwi.
Don’t be too sure.
“Ashton Goggins is the most important and innovative voice in surf journalism since Derek Rielly” Chas Smith, 2015
I stand behind it!
Check out the new Billabong Budweiser collaboration!
That was one of the things that attracted me to B’grit, was your involvement in that masterpiece. That, and your work in the MiEa.
